Historic Alabama Game Programs

1927 Rose Bowl
Jan. 1, 1927
Alabama 7 - Stanford 7
Rose Bowl Stadium, Pasadena, Calif.
In doing the research for various posts here on RBR I kept stumbling across cover images of Alabama gameday programs that were simply sensational (such as this one from the 1978 game against Missouri). While many of these were created for bowl games or other key contests there were a remarkable number of regular season programs that boasted fantastic cover art as well.
So I've collected 40 of these running from the 1927 Rose Bowl (above) to the 1993 Sugar Bowl for your perusal below. Enjoy and, as always, Roll Tide!

Oh yeah...
…my mom has a 2009 calendar of historic Alabama programs. I suppose that’s something that’s published annually.

i think two of these are from that...
…but i’m not completely sure of their authenticity. that swanee poster/program is credited to 1939 in the calendar but alabama didn’t play them that year. still, the design seems in line with the ones from that era.

as much as i hate auburn... and, lord, do i ever hate auburn.
the game program covers done for them by phil neel, the longtime cartoonist and art editor of the birmingham post-herald, are simply superb.

Posters
Any idea how to get these in poster form? At the very least, larger .jpg images would be great…

that the Great Gazoo was the Georgia Tech mascot?
I'm in no condition to drive...wait! I shouldn't listen to myself, I'm drunk.

No. Way!
Perfect!
(i saw a Georgia/Georgia Tech game back in the ’90s. . . .man- those Yellow Jacket fans are LEGION. And seem to travel with Wine-In-The-Box and picnic baskets in tow! they blanketed Athens, took over major streets and thorughfares. From 5-points to the stadium, I was awash in Sperry Topsiders, sweaters unworn/draped over shoulders, and 5-day wine-breath! Great fans though, very hospitable- if not rabid!)

The covers...
…from the 1930s are really beautiful. They remind me of the Olympic posters from the same era.
I think my favorite is the 1968 Bama/UT cover with the T & A front and center.

so awesome
Seriously, the amazing art here—the hand-lettering! I used to collect old yearbooks for just this reason—that pre-computer, we used to be such an amazingly visually literate society.
I’m just stunned. Awesome job, kleph!
Never quit. It is the easiest cop-out in the world.

thanks.
one of the most disappointing aspects of this project was seeing the complete drop off in quality as photographs became the norm. very often it was just a few staid shots of the coaches or a cheesy posed pic of some of the players and that’s it. the drama of the event was drained from it completely. which is why it’s pretty much the bowl posters represented for the 70s and after.

Just noticed...
…how awesome the Tulane lettering is where it makes a green wave.

that is a stellar work.
john chase was another fantastic artist who is represented twice here. his “louisiana purchase: an america story” is an astonishing achievement in the field that has been almost completely overlooked. a lot of the groundbreaking work done both in terms of design and storytelling style by the legendary artist will eisner was anticipated by chase in his strips.
