Bama Turned Down Owens?
It seems like a very strange story that we would turn down a LB candidate like Ladarius Owens, but apparently that's the story Beasley told when he committed to Clemson today. Is this just an 18 year old kid blowing smoke and getting attention, or can that possibly be true? I know we're both stocked and stacked at LB, but I can't imagine a reason (at least based on what's in the public domain) why we wouldn't want Owens. Does anybody know anything about this?

Do you like this story?

The number of players
you can sign is now limited. I suspect he just didn’t fit into the overall plan although it appears at one time we did make him an offer. Maybe it is a case of “If Bama offers you better take it now or you may be missing your chance.”
What did Saban say- You shop we shop.
I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.
Well...
According to some other boards, Beasley said the following:
I believe Alabama had a commitment program. I know they turned down Ladarius Owens and I didn’t want them to turn me down. I didn’t want to take that chance. In the end I knew Clemson was the right place for me. I love Clemson and its the only place for me.
I have no clue if that’s true or not, but it would explain Owens quick about-face regarding his announcement, and it would sure as hell explain Beasley’s late interest in Clemson. I don’t know if it’s true, but it could at least make a valid argument. Given how tight our numbers are right now, I think you could make a valid argument about effectively any player remaining the country having a commitable offer right now. If I were really forced on it, I guess, the only person I would say right now that, without a shadow of a doubt, that has a commitable offer is C.J. Mosley.

Consider the possibility that the coaching staff has access to information that you don’t.
wouldn't the comment Watchman put in paranthesis indicate that he/she is acutely aware that the coaching staff WOULD have access to infomation that is NOT available in the "public domain"?
seriously dude…your comment reads as needlessly argumentative and also bereft of comprehension of the very comment to which you were remarking on. was it a tough day at the office or somethin?
welcome to the SEC kiffykins...

No, it wouldn't
The parenthetical, coupled with the confusion, implies that what’s in the public domain is all there is. That is, of course, silly.
It seems like a very strange story that we would turn down a LB candidate like Ladarius Owens
. . . I can’t imagine a reason . . .
Can’t even imagine one? The fact that the coaching staff has more information on the recruit than the world at large itself is a commonly known piece of information, therefore Watchman is essentially saying “I can’t think of anything, including the coaching staff having some important piece of information that I don’t have, that would cause us not to offer the kid.”
I mean, really, imaginations are easy to use. Let’s try:
- Saban could have picked up on character issues
- We might have more commits coming from better players
- Given the new recruiting limits and the current crop of backers, it might be stupid to offer him
- Maybe they think he’s peaked and wouldn’t develop well
…we can go on like this for quite some time. Being unable to imagine a scenario in which we wouldn’t offer ANY player suggests either a) a really, really poor imagination or b) some bizarre underlying assumptions.
for some reason
a comment about things being stuck in dark places is coming to mind….
Scoring against Alabama will be like birthing a child: rare, painful, and messy. - The Ghost of Jay Cutler
Seriously?
I don’t assume you’re stupid because I misinterpret something you write…pedantic and picky perhaps, but not stupid. It would be nice to have the same courtesy extended.
I am fully aware, as noted by the parenthetical that the staff has information not available to the general public. “I can’t imagine” is not meant as a literal expression of my mental shortcomings, failure of imagination or bizarre underlying assumptions, it’s intended use in the post (a subject which I consider myself better qualified than you to address) is as a figure of speech expressing surprise at the decision (if indeed such a decision was made)—not disapproval.

a day or so ago, fox 6 news showed that owens said all of that was a rumor. said ua is still recruiting him and recruiting him hard! also said he is in contact with ua on a regular basis and like bama very much… noone knows for sure but him and cns so i guess we’ll just see where he goes… although i’ll never doubt cns my money is him going to awburn
who cares
we at one time gave him an offer to come to UA…he obviously waited too long and let that offer expire. personally, if he had to think about it that long then he’s not a guy i would want on my team either. saban wants 100% dedicated players who know what they want. the kid simply chose his next option…i dont think it makes a difference. Bama football is climbing with or without the kid and thats all i care about…moving on…
It's not the will to win, but the will to prepare to win that makes the difference.

The more...
The more I think about this, the more I cannot help but think the may have a degree of validity.
I hate to say it, but just looking at the raw numbers we are basically out of room. Period. We’ve got 18 commitments right now (not counting the two possible JUCO kids), and a lot of the attrition that cleared room for the 2009 class to make it were rising seniors, so that reduces the size of the 2010 class as well. Moreover, we’ve got four grayshirts from the 2009 class, and we’ve also got to account for Phelon Jones as well. Do the math… where is the room left? There just isn’t much, and honestly we may only have a couple of spots left right now.
Moreover, this isn’t just about Owens either. Beasley himself committed to Clemson with growing talk that his firm offer from ‘Bama may have fallen through. Now we hear this on Owens. Moreover, it looks like we have really backed off Damien Robinson, a five-star OT in his own right. Honestly, just about the only legit targets I can definitely find on the board right now are pretty much Keenan Allen (not sure on him either), Alfy Hill, probably James Stone, and C.J. Mosley. That’s about it.
I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some truth to all of these rumors honestly.
