Around SBN: The Gift Of The 2003 Tigers

SEC as Soundtrack: Kentucky

So, I've decided to skip the order around a bit and am fast forwarding to Kentucky. The Florida installation that we kicked off with was Swamp Song by Tool. NiceLittleSaturday's suggestion of "Wonderboy" by Tenacious D was a fantastic one for his Tebow-ness and one I wish I'd thought of.

Don't forget the self-imposed "rules" either:

  • Only music from 1990 to the present may be included...largely to prevent people telling me I should use "Deacon Blues" or "Sweet Home Alabama" for the Tide's song.
  • It has to be something I actually listen to

Anyway, onto Kentucky...

What can we say about Kentucky, the one SEC school that cares more about basketball than it does football?

One word: heretics

With that, I give you "Heretics" by Andrew Bird (who is playing at WorkPlay with the amazing St. Vincent on October 5th):

Man of Constant Sorrow

I know it’s much much older than your rules, but I’m going to ref. the 2000 O, Brother, Where Art Thou version…

I mean, 1984 for chrissakes since they beat UT. Back to back bowls wins…Once; historically a .505 team…and most of that success was PRIOR to 1960; add a dash of futility (2 wins against top 10 teams in 35 years); throw in the historic deadzone of recruiting (sorry Shaun); the vicious rivalry on the parque with L’ville and Duke; and, absolutely NO institutional support, and what Rich Brooks has done is nothing short of a miracle.

I just won a t-shirt tearing contest against the Tennessee coaching staff

Beast

First time I shot her, shot her in the side.
Hard to watch her suffer, but with the second shot she died...

The football team has received a lot more support in the last 3 years

Still, come Midnight Madness, combined with the arrival of Calipari……..it is going to be nuts here.

As to the song, if you are going with "heretics" as a theme...

…You have to go with The Heretic Anthem by Slipknot.

I would imagine...

…that I’m in a small minority of people that like both Andrew Bird and Tool.
