BlogPoll Calling: Preseason Top 25 - #15-#25
We'll (or, rather, I'll) be doing that whole BlogPoll thing again this year, so for the next few days I'll be breaking down my Preseason Top 25. The first BlogPoll comes out on Monday (8/24), so that will give us plenty of time to bicker over discuss who's too high, who's too low, who should have been included, and who I'm completely insane for including. So, without further ado, here are #s 15 thru 25.
15. Boise St. Broncos - The WAC is theirs this year, and with an offense that should outscore anyone (except possibly Oregon) they face, only five starters back on defense isn't as bad as it sounds.
16. Oregon Ducks - The Ducks return only 10 starters total, but Chip Kelly will keep them humming on offense with Jeremiah Masoli finally settled at QB.
17. Michigan St. Spartans - Kind of a reach on this one, but I like the way Dantonio focuses on the defense (8 starters back) and if they can at least stay efficient on offense they have a good shot at a warm weather bowl and possibly 10 wins.
18. North Carolina Tar Heels - Butch Davis got the Tar Heels to their first Bowl since 2004 (and only their second this century) on the strength of their defense, which brings back nine starters. If T.J. Yates can stay healthy and they can find someone to step in and fill the sizable shoes of Hakeem Nicks and Brandon Tate, the offense should also be respectable.
19. BYU Cougars - The offensive line needs to be rebuilt and someone is going to have to step up at WR, but Max Hall is back at QB and RB Harvey Unga is back for a shot at third straight 1000 yard season, while 7 starters are back on defense, including 6 of 7 members of the front seven. Taking on Oklahoma and Florida State early in the season isn't favorable for them, but a MWC championship isn't out of the question if they can get it together before hosting TCU in late October.
20. UCLA Bruins - Another reach pick here after a 4-8 season last year, but it's Neuheisel's (and Chow's) second season with the Bruins and all the upgrade in talent they've brought in, plus more familiarity with the offense from the veterans, means the offense should be more than a liability this season. The defense should be improved as well, but there is a lot of inexperience on this team.
21. Texas Tech Red Raiders - It's surprising to me that the Red Raiders have fallen off the map so quickly. Yes, Harrell to Crabtree is no longer in their favor, but when hasn't the Red Raider offense put up ridiculous numbers with relative unknowns at QB and split wide? Losses on the offensive line and on the defense (which, while not spectacular, was at least servicable for most of the season, a far cry from the porous sieve that Tech fans were used to seeing) hurt, certainly, but this will still likely be a unit that puts up ridiculous numbers and has a pretty good chance to get to double digit wins again.

Plus, Brandon Carter's new skull tattoo has to count for something, right?
22. Iowa Hawkeyes - Without Shonn Greene I'm a little nervous on including the Hawkeyes, but 8 of 11 starters are back on defense, Ricky Stanzi should be mature enough to cut down on the turnovers, and Jewell Hampton should fill in nicely at RB after a solid freshman season toiling in Greene's sizable shadow.
23. Arkansas Razorbacks - The defense can't help but improve, Michael Smith is the best running back you haven't heard of (1000 yard rusher and led the SEC in all-purpose yardage), and Ryan Mallett is the pocket passer that Petrino needs. They're going to rain on someone's parade this year (please be LSU's, please be LSU's...) and should be back to a bowl.
24. Georgia Bulldogs - Probably too low on the Dawgs, but without Moreno, Massaquoi, and Stafford, and not a lot of pass rush from the defense, it's just difficult to tell what they are going to be capable of.
25. UAB Blazers - If Spurrier can give Duke a token vote in the coaches poll and Kyle can give Southern Miss, despite having no other connection to the Golden Eagles than respect for one of their alumni, a token vote in the BlogPoll then I can certainly throw my alma mater a sideways wink on my ballot. Besides, just about everyone is back on an offense that should be fairly potent and the defense just got a much needed infusion of JUCO talent before the spring. Division and conference titles aren't necessarily within reach, but reaching bowl eligibility is.
Also considering: West Virginia Mountaineers, Clemson Tigers, Florida St. Seminoles, Nebraska Cornhuskers, and Kansas Jayhawks.

UGA is too low
They’ll have a good O-line (after getting tortured last year with injuries); a solid running game; Cox should be a decent game manager. Plus, they have Richt, who is a fine coach. 9+ wins….again.

I thought the same thing as I typed it.

Yeah...
…they should at least be ahead of Arkansas. I’ll probably give them a bump up once I submit my ballot.
I think Boise is way to high..
I understand that they will run through their conference easily..but that doesn’t mean they are a good team.
Id put them at #25 at best..
Also, FSU should be in there in replace of Iowa.

I'm way more sold on Iowa...
….than Florida State. As for Boise, if they beat Oregon they can run the table. It’s not their fault they play in a conference that is looking at a serious down year.
i guess thats why i can't rank them that high
Oregon should be OK this year but not world beaters. If thats their only big win, I find it hard to rank them at #15. #25 is respectable given their schedule…but i understand your thinking.

I think the Ducks...
are going to get trucked….a lot.

what are polls for
if not to pick holes?
I’m wondering about the UNC pick though? They seem to be a media darling this pre-season, a la ole miss, and I can’t figure out why everyone is so high on them?
I think they are behind NCSU, Wake Forest, and ECU for the best team in their own state even.
not that i care much about the acc, but just sayin
Im telling you, you need to look at Troy
WR Jerrel Jernigan – Biletnikoff Watchlist
HB DuJuan Harris – Walker Watchlist
DE Brandon Lang – Hendricks Watchlist, Lombardi Watchlist
DE Cameron Sheffield – Lombardi Watchlist
K Sam Glusman – Groza Watchlist
C Danny Franks – Remington Watchlist
LB Boris Lee – Lombardi Watchlist
QB Levi Brown – Manning Watchlist
Then on top of that throw in WR Josh Jarboe, DL Sidell Corley, CB Jorrick Calvin, the list goes on and on. Couple that with one of the best non-AQ coaches in the country with a favorable schedule and you have a very, very, very potent football squad.
he was injured. injured bad.
Poor ole UAB...
is going to get HAMMERED.

That is one thing I'll give credit to Socialists and Communists for...
they can make some pretty awesome looking propaganda.
normally, i'd agree with ya nico...

Ucla?
Dude, that’s the most retarded placing for this team on anyone’s poll. They’re not even picked in the top half of the PAC 10, yet you place them 16th?
They won’t make it out of Knoxville without injuries, and they sure as hell won’t win that game. After that game, whether they win or lose- where do you place them after that?
That’s your dilemma putting them at 16. (have another beer)

Ooops! Not 16, but 20.
Oregon at 16 is fine. Ucla at 20 is a major major stretch.

Oregon = disappointment.
No faith in those jokers this year…Cal may very well take the PAC 10 with a rebuilding Trojan D (and a frosh QB…and losing their best OL). But, beyond that, I think it’s total suckdom for the conference. 8 wins for the Beavs, sucktacular ’Zona, rebuilding Wash squad (may surprise), DRECK in Pullman; crap in Tempe…Mark it now….UCLA finishes in a 3-way tie with Stanford and OSU for 3rd. Ducks finish T-5th or 6th.

No way on fUcla
They’ll suck donkey balls this year, prolly next. I don’t buy the Oregon hype either, Cal fails when the chips really count. I hear you on Washington- that’s my dark horse. OSU is way better than they were last year, yes they lost a lot of people- but not like Oregon who had players TRANSFER OUT!
I’ve not seen anybody place fUcla anywhere near a top 50 program, except Todd.

UCLA Fan
20 does seem high, but he’s right we brought in TONS of talent and all of our guys get the benefit of a second year in the system. I think we have a good shot in Tennessee too. I keep getting more and more reasons to think this season could be better than almost anyone thinks. Of course, we’ll get our reality check in week two and see how good we really are…
BYU might not make it. . .
They are suffering a horrific rash of injuries. I guess we will see how they show against OU, but I’m thinking it could be really a long day for them.
your QB situation has gotta'
make you nervous…that and the losses on the D Line. I’m gonna’ go with TCU in the annual MWC three-way of russian roulette.

Old saying
In college ball:
Yeah.
Actually, we like the QB situation and our D-line is our strongest and deepest unit.
TCU gets us at their place, and everyone is picking them or assuming BYU returns to form, but we’all reckon we’ll show up and play the game anyways, just in case.
We actually have played well there in the past, TCU. Depends on how our O plays.
