Help me to understand!

OK, like any good Bama fan I've been studying the team roster and trying to memorize the depth chart before the season starts.  But I need some help.  What do the various names (Sam, Will, Mike and Jack) for the linebackers mean? And is this something universal in football or is it a Coach Saban thing? And are we as deep as we look at this position?

Thank you in advance for your help :)

I don't believe the Fall 2009 Roster is out yet....

the players are still competing for the starting postions. But when it comes out, I would think that with the rotation, that depth allows, will be wide and varying.

Not on CBS again !!

It's kinda "universal"...

….though every coach has their own terminology. Sam means “strongside”, Will is “weakside”, Mike is “middle”, and Jack is the other outside linebacker that is usually playing as a defensive end.

btw...

this is a very good question. it confused the hell out of me for the longest time.

Thanks ya'll, and while we're at it...

strongside and weakside? Last year the right side was the strong side, right?

by Queen of the Universe on Aug 18, 2009 12:14 PM CDT reply actions

it can be either.

it depends on which side of the field that the offense has placed more players. look for the tight end (he’ll be at one end of the line but a step further back that the actual linemen).

Jeez...

not necessarily....

…minions usually handle the details.

by kleph on Aug 18, 2009 3:41 PM CDT up reply actions

exactly...

but I do know enough about football to know that all these fools here in Texas that think their team is superior to ours are fools. I just didn’t want to ask any of them cause I refuse to show another team’s fans that I don’t already know everything about football. :)

if you go over to...

the football outsiders website and go back through some of the old strategy minicamp posts you’ll find a lot of excellent and accessible pieces on the basics. a lot of it is geared to the pros but a great deal applies to the college game.

you should certainly check out the one on the spread offense and the one on the difference between the 3-4 and the 4-3 defense. both of these come up all the time in reference to the college game but almost nobody takes the time to explain what they are.

thank you

I checked these out. Now I’m even more ready for the season to FINALLY GET HERE.

(I just ate a huge bowl of Trix cereal and milk. I’m at work. Not working. And . . . .very happy)

Silly rabbit

Trix are for minions. (yeah, I took the easy one. I get ’em where I can.)

I got 2 boxes of Trix and 2 boxes of Cocoa Puffs. . .

. . . for $5.00 (store sale) and I had a $2.00 off coupon if I buy 2 or more boxes of General Mills cereals. (and the coupon was “doubled” so I actually got $3 off). Total price for 4 boxes of yummy yum cereal = $2.

You can’t beat that with a stick!

I’m munching out ALL WEEK at work, so long as no one drinks my milk in the fridge? You can bet my boxes of cereal are under my desk. Hell, I’ll eat that stuff without milk! (but I prefer milk)

Peanut Butter Crunch is that ISH!!!

and don’t forget the limited editon OOPS! ALL BERRIES…

by SpockJenkins on Aug 20, 2009 10:18 AM CDT up reply actions

Limited edition what?

You mean, there was an all-berries Cap’n, captain? Man alive! I didn’t catch that train when it came in. Ain’t never heard of it, but. . . . .that’s not to say I wouldn’t try it. I have a strong indication that I’d eat the crap outta that cereal.

I can make a sandwich outta bread and something else?, whatever- I’ll eat that sandwich like it’s the best sandwich I ever ate. That’s how all my sandwiches are to me. I used to HAVE TO eat cereal with powdered milk as a kid, that’s how poor we were. (or, that’s how my mama had us brainwashed? you ever eat Special K and powdered milk? that’s gotta be the most nastiest and harmful thing to do to a kid. hell, i’d rather put Tang in my cereal than powdered milk. you should have heard the griping back then. my mama.) What I’m getting at is this, lately- I’ve been prolly having too many bacon/eggs/potatoes breakfasts. My cholesterol level is ideal, and blood pressure has been excellent according to my last annual check-up- but. . . .sooner or later gravity and time will be unkind to my metabolism and so I’ve been seriously watching what I eat, as far as trans fat, sodium, and LDL intake.

Cereal is now epicenter for health. (who cares about teeth? i got a pearly-white grill, except for two implants that were necessary because those teeth got knocked the f_ck out. Anybody who says they like Grape Nuts is telling everybody they like to eat crunchy sand and have a prediliction of hating their mouth.

Trix, Cocoa Pebbles, Cap-N Crunch might not be the best morning cereals to eat, but- don’t forget. . . .THEY’RE FORTIFIED! (getting used to 1% milk has been a disaster for me. might as well drink powdered milk, no? so. . . .back to 100%, but. . . . it’s ORGANIC! y’all!)

Considering buying a mad-grip of those Post Honey Bunches of Oats. Had some at a buddy’s, they’re not half bad. Trouble with those Post corn-flake type cereals is that you have to limit the amount of serving per bowl ‘cause those flakes just don’t stand a chance in milk for very long. So, instead of having one bigass bowl of that stuff, you have to have like 4 small bowls. (it’s okay. . . .i do the same thing with The Cap’N, i preen like a teenage girl with all that crunchiness and meltiness, and loveliness in my mouth while my endless stomach yearns for it’s turn to grub out)

Ah crud! This has been a silly reply, and my toast just burned to a crisp. Great! Now I gotta leave my windows open for the morning. AND take out the trash, otherwise the smell of my little bonfire will stick around all day. (it’s decided! i’m gonna wrastle me up some chorizo-breakfast burrito from the Roach-Coach that’s parked near my work. for $2.50- you can’t beat that with a stick! wonder if that girl sells beers too? chorizo and beer? ummmm, i’m liking the way my Thursday is shaping up)

Hey Spock!

There’s these 2 receptionists at my work- one of them is from Sweden, but she looks like that hot girl on Transformers (why can’t I remember her name, isn’t it like- Regina or something. ah forget it, anyway- indeed, she looks just like her. the one who is with Witwicky, THAT hot one.) Anyways, a number of the staff is out of office, and have been for about 2 days. So, what did these girls do? Changed the piped in Muzak/Tepid Jazz/LukewarmEZListening music to . . . .an oldies station. It’s not just any old oldies- we’re talking Low Rider oldies. Smokey, Heatwave, Malo, War, Ohio Players. . . .you get the gist. Then, this one song it goes, “If Loving You is Wrong, I don’t wanna be right”- ’member that one?

HAVE YOU HEARD THE LYRICS TO IT? I mean, I’ve heard that song a lot- not lately- but still, a lot! Today was the first day that I actually listened real closely to the words. Man. . . . .that dude in that song is ONE SPRUNG dumbf_ck, gettin’ his nut off a good-good-lovin’ slice OF STRANGE!

Totally flummoxed since that song. I can’t stop singing it, and now I can’t believe I never heard the words to it until today. Crazy!

Oooh! You a sly one, Spock!

OK, I’ll try and sneak a snap of her real soon. I’m prolly gonna use my camera phone, is that aight? Where do I send it to? (she has the face AND the body. my problem is. . . .how do I get a delicious angle on her “backs”, as it were? How do I frame the question as to why I wanna pic of her? We’re not dating or hangin out. We’ve had some drinks here and there, usually after work- nothing special. ‘Sides, I don’t have “eyes for her”. . . .my eyes just always seem to be checking her out, like. . . .forever.

I got some game, Spock. I’ll see what wickedness my little noggin conjures in order for Lisette (Swedish/Megan Fox girl) and/or Lani (the other mamacita, from Hawaii or. . . .Ha-wah-ee-ee as she says it’s properly pronounced. Gimme til next Friday at least. Okay? If it comes earlier? I’ll shoot it out to you then.

Sheeeeeeeee!
