Brutal Honesty from Frank Beamer

I like Frank Beamer: I always have. I shouted loudly for him in '96-'97 to replace Stallings, and again in '02-03 to replace the Kansas Turncoat Bastard. One of the reasons I like Frank is his love of smacking people around in the trenches and brutal honesty about his team. This little gem from Fannation is the most recent instance

"Do you feel as good about this team as you did three weeks ago?" a reporter asked Beamer on Wednesday. "No," Beamer responded. "Three weeks ago we had Darren Evans."

And, you know what? He's right. For a team already offensively challenged, to place it's hopes on youngster RBs, a terrible QB, and a hopefully-dear-god-it-has-to-be-better offensive line, losing Evans was devastating.

FanPosts are just that; posts created by the fans. They are in no way indicative of the opinions of SBN and the authors of Roll Bama Roll.

I'm not sure I'd label

Tyrod Taylor as “terrible”. Is he a great passer? No, but he is still a significant threat. This is his 3rd year of playing and he rushed for 738 yards last season. I hope that we’re not dismissing VT.

by akbrown15 on Aug 27, 2009 10:02 AM CDT reply actions

I'm not dismissing them;

but a 57% passer with a 2-7 td-int ratio tells me he’s not seeing the field very well, hence, the 738 yards rushing.

I agree with you....he isn't going to the NFL. (at least as a QB)

However, they can win games with him as the QB…and that is the only stat that matters.

by akbrown15 on Aug 27, 2009 10:18 AM CDT up reply actions

He can most certainly be kept in check. .

and if there’s a defense to slow him down it’s ours. We will consistently be where we need to be because of our defensive minded coaching, and that’s what it takes to stop a scramble-type quarterback. We should be fine with this being their main weapon.

I agree...

It seems the closer we get to this game, the more people are acting like we got this in the bag…and its starting to make me a little nervous. Believe me, this game is HUGE for VT, and UA is going to get everything this team and Beamer has. It will be a fight and I think Bama can win it, but there is no reason for Bama Fan to get cocky on this one…or you could end up with your heart torn out. I just hope Saban has the troops focused and ready…as I am sure he will.

by String30 on Aug 27, 2009 10:28 AM CDT up reply actions

Those

people are focusing too much on VT’s shortcomings and not enough on our unproven offense. This game is essentially strength vs. weakness (our D vs. their O), strength vs. ??? (their D vs. our O) and I think special teams is a push.

Agree totally String30

It kinda feels like it did right before the Utah game…extreme confidence and we know how that turned out…

Don’t get me wrong i think we will win..but lets not get ahead of ourselves..

How the team plays is in no way, shape, or form affected by how the fans feel about the game. It doesn’t matter if everyone on RBR is dismissing VT, as long as Saban and the team aren’t, we’re fine.

In fact, that’s part of most of our reasons for confidence: we know Saban will have the team ready.

I'm wrong all the time.

what..

i totally thought Saban checked RBR everyday to get an idea on how the fans were feeling…

Will you guys REC this so we can have one thread talking about the VT game?

To many different threads discussing the same thing….it would be nice to have one at the top that we can go to….to discuss our thoughts about the upcoming game.

I think we are all a little nervous about being favorites

not to mention the Utah game, but the past ten years or so have seen us play the underdog role too many times. One thing we need to remember is that Saban, while far from perfect, is pretty good about getting his team to learn from mistakes. This team is far better than last year, and will continue to get so as we are loaded with elite, although unproven in many cases, talent.

We will be fine. I am as nervous as the next guy, but my gut (which got me totally nervous for Utah) is telling me this will be close for a quarter or so, but we have the talent, skill, and coaching to put them away and keep them away. The biggest thing missing from us in the past has been that killer instinct mentality. This team, IMO based on what I have seen and read, is cocky but aware they need to prepare. Bama is going to be a beast for years to come, and we are going to have to learn to be the favorites 95% + of the time we play.

I respect VaTech, but our team is all business. Take away the Andre distraction from the Sugar Bowl and we probably win that one and end up #2 in the country. We did get lucky in regards to injuries last year and an admittedly down SEC (still top two conferences in the country in a down year), but even with that and our youth in many skill positions, we were 15 F#%$^# minutes from playing for the NC against an Oklahoma team I think our D would help us win. And we are getting better.

Ladies and Gentleman, we are back, and this time it isn’t a fluke SI cover. We are in a really good place, and the future for Alabama football, guided by a coach who has injected much needed discipline, talent, and respect into the program, is ridiculously bright.

We are not the same persons this year as last; nor are those we love. It is a happy chance if we, changing, continue to love a changed person. ~W. Somerset Maugham

I agree with BR07 ...

….in the fact that we are gun shy about being favorites. However, I don’t know how we can claim that this team is “far better than last years team” when we haven’t played one single game this season. Last years team went 12-2. If this team finishes better than 12-2, then we can claim that they are better. Just my opinion. I agree with you in our (Bama fan’s) optimism. We have a lot to feel optimistic about. I hope that we do not over look anyone….especially a VT team that has won 10 plus games 5 years straight. Like them or not, they know how to win games with Beamer. And that can’t be over looked or, as String mentioned, your heart is going to get ripped out.

by akbrown15 on Aug 27, 2009 12:27 PM CDT up reply actions

We

are better in just overall talent. I remember us being VERY nervous about our oline before last season. It wasn’t because of experience, it was talent. This years squad makes us nervous only because they have little experience but are loaded with talent.

Same goes for the WR’s. IMO we are 10 times more talented at that position.

So anyways. We are ’better" overall. Now they have to go out and win.

I know what you are saying

but Bammer just kinda stole my thunder lol. We have better talent is what I meant. We lack experience in some areas, and the SEC should be tougher this year. For the next couple of years anyway, we should grow in our talent level through Nick’s recruiting.

I am not overlooking Beamer, just stating that we SHOULD put this one away; if we don’t get that killer instinct, however, we run the risk of a lot of teams jumping up and beating us.

I’m as excited about watching this offense as I am about the impending decapitations our D is going to lay on people - Stuck in the Plains

by BamaReturns07 on Aug 27, 2009 12:59 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree...sort of

I think we’re loaded with talent with all of the potential of being amazing this year. But I don’t think I’m going to begin watching ANY game on our schedule this year thinking it’ll be a for sure win. I think maybe I’m gunshy from all of the post ’92 years when we seem to be doing really well until at some point in the season the wheels come off the wagon. I love our team, and I ALWAYS hope our team is going to win, but I remember all of those close games from last year and wince.

I hope they prove me wrong, cause I’d love nothing more than for them to be the dominant, battle-hardened proven favorite that we all hope they can be…

Close games ?

Clemson by 24
Tulane by 14
WKU by 34
Ark by 35
UGA by 31 at half, 24 with 3 min left. i.e., never really close
UK by 3, but it was 10 when UK hit a long pass with approx 40 sec left.
OM by 21 at half, but it got legit close (so here is 1 close one)
UT by 20
Ark St by 35
MSU by 25
au by 36

So, where are all of the close games ? 1 against OM. UK never had the ball with a chance to lead. Bama overpowered its opposition last year – physically as well as on the scoreboard.

by red1 on Aug 29, 2009 12:06 AM CDT up reply actions

tulane

ol miss and UK were all too close. closer than they shoulda been, and could have potentially turned into loses.

good call...someone forgot LSU.

I think ovetime constitutes as CLOSE. I do not beleive the UK game was close. They scored very late to make the score look closer than it really was. Tulane the same….

by akbrown15 on Aug 29, 2009 10:31 AM CDT up reply actions

the LSU game that went to OT kinda goes without saying

our inability to put tulane away or even move the ball on them however, was almost if not more frightening to me than the game @ lsu. we only won the tulane game because of our supposedly weak special teams.

welcome to the SEC kiffykins...

I get what you're saying...

Even if we don't beat 12-2...

I’d just like to hear this year’s team described as something other than “workman-like.”

we’re looked as a team that takes it seriously and goes to work every day… It isn’t personal…its just business.

mechanical, machine-like, unrelenting or soul crushing…of course I am happy with 4 yard dives and deflating the football…
