Defensive Co-ordinators in the SEC
I have probably thought about this topic more than I should have, but this year's line-up of defensive assistants in the SEC really raises some interesting questions. First, you have some old faces in new places, like John Chavis going from Tennessee to LSU. Then, you have some extremely old faces in new places, like Monte Kiffin taking over the reigns at Tennesee. Other new faces of note include Ted Roof at Auburn. Of these, who do you guys think will make the biggest impact on the SEC this year?

I voted Chavis...
…not because I think he’s the best, but he should improve LSU’s defense by leaps and bounds over the horrible unit they were last year. They have the talent, they just needed someone that can make the right calls.

Ditto Chavis for the same reason - he has the talent at LSU to turn that around quickly

Monte Kiffin
He invented the “Tampa Two” which is emulated throughout the NFL. His defenses were in the top 5 in the NFL for many consecutive years. Countless players have made the pro-bowl under his tutelage and soon he will have NFL Hall of Famers that learned from him….(D.Brooks, W. Sapp, possibly J. Lynch) Old guy, but tons of energy and master at motivation.
If this were a poll on who was the best DC...
…I would have voted Monte Kiffin in a heartbeat. But its about who will have the biggest impact, and neither UTs or Auburns defenses were that bad last season. LSUs was.
All true...
…which made this an easy vote. I also expect Auburn’s D to regress under Roof, at least for year one.

i think chavis
is a damn good coach and that he was the one that kept the wheels form falling off in knoxville for so long, before they eventually did anyways.
i’m not sure about kiffin, yes the Tampa 2 was revolutionary, and it was used by most everyone to stop a team that can run and pass downfield. but now the new jam is the 3-4 robber 1. and we have the architect of that system here, as our head coach.
welcome to the SEC kiffykins...
Tampa 2 wasn't anything new when the Bucs made it famous...
….Pittsburgh was running what would become known as “Tampa 2” coverage back in the 70s, a fact even Tony Dungy is quick to admit:
“The roots of the Tampa 2 system actually are in the Steel Curtain days of Pittsburgh football. Tony Dungy has been quoted to say "My philosophy is really out of the 1975 Pittsburgh Steelers playbook," said Dungy during media interviews while at Super Bowl XLI. "That is why I have to laugh when I hear ‘Tampa 2’. Chuck Noll and Bud Carson — that is where it came from, I changed very little."1 Lovie Smith mentions having played the system in junior high school during the 1970s, though Carson introduced the idea of moving the middle linebacker into coverage. Carson’s system became especially effective with the Steelers’ addition of aggressive and athletic middle linebacker Jack Lambert.2”
is there
a team with a dominate D that uses it in D1?
Scoring against Alabama will be like birthing a child: rare, painful, and messy
I realize I'm playing grammar/spelling police, but I've got to do this...
a team with a dominate D
dom⋅i⋅nate

3. to predominate, permeate, or characterize.
dom⋅i⋅nant
–adjective
1. ruling, governing, or controlling; having or exerting authority or influence: dominant in the chain of command.
2. occupying or being in a commanding or elevated position.
It’s DOMINANT.
You had me at "ROLL TIDE"!!!
Not to split hairs...
….Monte Kiffin was the mastermind behind the Tampa 2 which is a slight modification of Tony Dungy’s cover 2 defense. From the same “wiki” that you referenced above mentioning Lovie Smith and Bud Carson it specifically mentions…
" When executed properly, the Tampa 2 defense is difficult to beat, which speaks for its longevity that it has fundamentally not changed since first introduced in 1996."
Any good football coach is also a good thief. The NFL ,especially, is a copy-cat league. Every scheme is derived from someone else’s scheme. Offensive and defensive schemes are replicated and/or modified for coaching philosophy, personnel, etc.
Regardless, Kiffin is a Hall of Fame defensive coordinator that will help bring top talent to UT. If you’re a HS kid that plays corner, LB, or safety…he has numerous players that he has turned into NFL all pros. Ronde Barber is a great example. He isnt particularly fast, he isn’t a great cover corner, but he fit well in the scheme and has made many pro bowls. I believe his resume alone will bring top defensive talent….much the same Saban has done for UA.
