Alabama football player Brandon Deaderick shot twice
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this just happened across the street. Of course, our thoughts and prayers go out to Brandon and his family. By all accounts, this was a random act of violence that occurred when he resisted an armed robbery.

Update
Witnesses say he was shot in the arm and the hip, and supposedly should be okay.
My brother lives at Ridgecrest
and just texted me that. Hope he is ok; glad to hear it shouldn’t be too serious.

Supposedly hit in the arm and the leg...
… but not life threatening.

Helicopter overhead...
… and neighborhood is blocked off. I think the assailant arrived in a vehicle but ran away. Not exactly sure. It appears that the manhunt is going on now.
If that's true...
… he won’t get far.

Scratch that...
…can’t be sure on the escape method. Apparently he arrived in the vehicle with two accomplices. All of their whereabouts, including the vehicle, are currently unknown.
Prayers for him and his family
Hopefully the injuries are not serious, really puts things into perspective whenever something like this happens.
Ugh.
I wish someone couldve given the assailants a taste of their own medicine
he was injured. injured bad.
According to a poster on 'BamaMag...
… he and his girlfriend were broken in on, and he was shot trying to resist / protect his girlfriend. Sounds plausible, anyway.

According to witnesses at the complex...
… the assailant was cruising the parking lot, presumably looking for a mark. He happened upon Deaderick and his girlfriend as they were arriving in their car. He demanded money, and Deaderick exited (or attempted to exit) the car, and then he was shot. Then the assailant fled with the gun and Deaderick ran into an apartment.
Every report I see out there...
… has him being shot in the arm and in the leg. One said forearm and another said hip.

Witness said...
… “arm and hip.” But another person in the complex said wrist and leg.
I hope not hip...

Thankfully, though...
I’ve seen nothing yet to indicate it might be life threatening, and that’s the best news we can hope for.
He’ll miss some football time for sure, but that’s not important right now. Just as long as he’s okay.

Per the T-news update, at the above link...
“The player suffered one gunshot wound to the forearm, which Anderson said was not life-threatening. The chief was at DCH Regional Medical Center at about 11:30 p.m. Monday night and had spoken with the victim.”
If that's true...
Then that is absolutely great news. Not only is it not life threatening, but an injury like that probably shouldn’t affect his long-term football career, which a shot to the hip could have easily ruined entirely.

That’s quite possible, but my buddy who was the one to call the cops said Deaderick’s friends definitely reported holding towels over 2 wounds, arm and hip.
Well, fuck...

by TheRedTideConsumes on Sep 1, 2009 12:23 AM CDT up reply actions
Exactly...
I’m thinking if it ricocheted, it had to bounce off of something hard (i.e. bone). If it were just a flesh wound in the arm, it would have just came out clean on the other side.
It’s possible that Deaderick was holding himself in a way where the forearm was near the hip and it could have gone straight through both, but I’m afraid that didn’t happen.
At the very least, though, if they are saying it’s not life-threatening, it didn’t hit one of the major blood carriers.
by outsidethesidelines on Sep 1, 2009 12:26 AM CDT up reply actions
Could it be...
…that the bullet ricocheted off the car after going through the arm? Reports seem to indicate he was exiting (or attempting to exit) the vehicle when it happened. I don’t know enough about ballistics to make that kind of call. But, if so, I would imagine that the hip injury was far less severe.
I wouldn't think so...
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t know jack about ballistics, but I would think not.
Going through the arm is one thing, but if it comes out clean there, I would imagine it would penetrate the vehicle instead of ricocheting off it. And, honestly, I’m not sure it could go through the leg, bounce off the vehicle, and still have the momentum needed to penetrate the leg at any real depth.

I was really just trying to hold out hope that it didn’t hit the bones in his arm. I’ll just hold onto the through-and-through possibility, which should still make the hip injury less severe.
Oh me too...
… hopefully that is the case, and in any event admittedly I don’t know anything about ballistics, so don’t put much weight on my opinion.
I’m just afraid that the bullet had to hit a bone to ricochet.

Two DE's...
… on the first team, and two more on the second team. First team was Deaderick and Washington, second team was Davis and Dareus. With Deaderick out, Davis steps up into his starting role, and the extra playing time is absorbed by Sentimore and Square.
by outsidethesidelines on Sep 1, 2009 1:04 AM CDT up reply actions
Sentimore...
… will almost certainly play as a true freshman now, but he’s behind Luther Davis in the rotation.
And, again, Davis was going to play a hell of a lot this year regardless.

Marcell Dareus
I’m thinking he’ll be the one to step in a play now…

People may doubt what you say, but they will always believe what you do.
Not exactly...
… he plays more of the end-tackle combo position manned by Washington, and then moves inside to the nose on passing downs. He rarely plays the true defensive end position manned by Deaderick. That’s not to say that Dareus is not going to play more because of this, but it won’t be a major increase.
And again, keep in mind that both Luther Davis and Marcel Dareus were going to play a hell of a lot even with a healthy Deaderick.
As I hinted at on Twitter, the three big effects from this on the personnel will be:
(1) Luther Davis will smart, and thus his playing time goes up a fair little bit
(2) Darrington Sentimore now almost certainly plays some as a true freshman
(3) Damien Square moves back to DE from Jack linebacker where he spent the last couple of days.

the only
reason he tried robbing him was because he was in a car…no way if Deaderick was just walking down the street that this happens…the shooter probably saw how huge he was when he tried to get out of his car and freaked….

Updates...
Per BOL… an arrest has been made in front of Cypress Inn restaurant around midnight, cop cars were covering the place.
Deaderick was shot once in the arm. After being shot once and the shooter fled, he walked upstairs to the second floor apartment, waited for the ambulance to arrive, and walked back downstairs. No mention of a hip wound.
A witness is saying it sounded like a 22, for the gun guys out there, what does that mean in terms of power?
by outsidethesidelines on Sep 1, 2009 1:49 AM CDT reply actions
A .22 caliber pistol is about as small as it gets.....
.22 caliber is used for killing small vermin. However, a well placed shot could still cause serious injury, particularly if the shooter used hollow point bullets which mushroom on impact rather than passing through.
Sounds like he will be ok based on that report. I sure hope so.
So...
… here’s my question. You shoot a muscular, 300 pound guy from close range in the forearm, what happens? Does it actually get deep enough to the bone, and if so what kind of damage are we talking about once it gets there?
by outsidethesidelines on Sep 1, 2009 1:58 AM CDT up reply actions
And...
… could a shot like that ricochet off a bone, and be powerful enough to re-enter in the hip?
by outsidethesidelines on Sep 1, 2009 2:00 AM CDT up reply actions
Keep in mind that BD has a pretty big arm, but the bone inside of it isn’t exceptionally large — it’s just covered in muscle, so depending on where on the forearm he was hit there could be a pretty substantial amount of arm to hit that isn’t anywhere near the bone.
I'm wrong all the time.
Think so?
Don’t get me wrong, I’m far from a doctor, but I would imagine that BD would at least have slightly bigger and stronger bones than the typical person would. It might not be enough to make a difference, but I would imagine a 6’4 and 300 pound athlete would have a big, stronger bone than your typical student walking around campus.
In any event, though, hopefully it’s a moot point. The more we hear, the more it sounds like a flesh wound only. If he’s going home today, basically 12 hours after it happening, without ever being put in an ICU room, I think that probably means it didn’t hit bone, arteries, nerves, etc. All of that, I would imagine, would require surgery and a much longer hospital stay.
by outsidethesidelines on Sep 1, 2009 12:08 PM CDT up reply actions
I would be pretty surprised if BD’s bones were significantly larger than any other 6’4, 300lb male. It’s not like his bones get bigger as he puts on muscle.
I'm wrong all the time.
True...
The bones shouldn’t get bigger putting on muscle, but I imagine the structure of a 6’4 frame should yield a tad bit bigger bone than that of the typical person. Again, though, I’m not sure it would make any difference anyway when a bullet came running in.
Either way, I’m hoping it’s a flesh wound and nothing more, and that the bones never become an issue.
by outsidethesidelines on Sep 1, 2009 1:45 PM CDT up reply actions
Word around town this morning...
… was that the bullet ricocheted off of his arm (as in his bulging, rippling muscles) and hit the hip. Like you said, being released this early indicates neither injury was severe. So, sounds like at least some of our assumptions were correct: .22, hit the arm, bounced into the hip, no severe injuries, should be fine.
But I hadn’t heard anything about catching the guy. Do we know that?
Hmm...
… that would be great. I never really considered the possibility of it ricocheting off the arm without actually passing throw and / or hitting the bone. Hopefully that’s it.
As for catching the guy, they made a pretty big arrest last night at Cypress Inn — cops were apparently crawling all over the place — but the cops wouldn’t confirm it was related to the Deaderick shooting, and as of this morning a couple of stories made it sound like they were still chasing him.

No expert here but a .22 is a smaller caliber.
I am glad to hear he is ok. This really puts things in perspective. I am glad an arrest has been made as well.
That's what I thought...
… again, I don’t know much about guns, but my understanding was that a .22 is generally a pretty light weapon. Now that might not make much of a difference from close range, but still nice to know.
Hopefully they throw the book at this asshole, attempted murder and everything else. I’ll say this… he’s going before a Tuscaloosa jury for shooting a starting Alabama football player five days before a huge game? They could charge that kid with any damn thing in the statute book and get a conviction in thirty seconds.
by outsidethesidelines on Sep 1, 2009 1:56 AM CDT up reply actions
Yeah...
if someone told me i was going to be shot and i had to pick the weapon, i would chose the .22. If that is indeed the weapon that was used by the perp then my guess is that it was the everyday easy to get ammo as well, which wouldn’t cause much damage even at close range…unless as stated above it was “well placed”. Which appears to not have happened here.
ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!!!
Gentry Estes story up...
… nothing groundbreaking, but he continues to mention only being shot in the arm. He mentions nothing whatsoever about the hip injury, just like Walsh.
At this point, I don’t think the hip is a major concern. If it did ricochet off into the hip, it apparently didn’t do any real damage because it’s not being mentioned at all in these reports.

Ditto on Paranormal
about the cheap .22 ammo. It’s a very low-power round, and if the perp was going to rob somebody with a caliber that small, odds are he had the cheapest available ammo as well. As everyone else has said, hopefully it only grazed him or was a “flesh wound.” If it damaged muscle in his forearm, his mobility could be affected, which could be bad news not only for his football career but for his everyday life as well. Hopefully that is not the case.
