WHERE’S MY COUNTRY OR BLUEGRASS? Went a little old school with Robin, Kinks, RS, LZ, The Fall, & Isaac. No Mark O’Connor though! Damn, I’ve been listening to him all week surfing. But, NO!
Todd- I was reading the LA Times yesterday, and seeing as you’re an old-school soul music fan- I thought you’d be interested in either attending or knowing about this event taking place this weekend. Sam Cooke, BB King, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf- et al, will be represented at the The Sunflower River Blues and Gospel Festival begins Friday (today) in Clarksdale, Mississippi and going on throughout the weekend. It seems to be a commemorative/tribute to Sam Cooke for the most part, but??? Have a capital weekend everybody!

I wish...
…I had known about the Cooke tribute earlier (young kids = no spontaneous road trips). On a positive note, Little T&A has been my favorite Rolling Stones song since I was 13. Keith Richards FTW.

that sounds like an awesome show...
…I’m with NLS, wish I had known about this earlier, I would have made tracks to Clarksdale.
sidenote
That Simple Minds entry- not so much the song but the group, reminds me of Breakfast Club and John Hughes passing yesterday. (see kleph, talkin’ all that shizz about John last week left him forlorn and heartbroken. you DID IT!- totally. just. joking. kleph. but still. . . .how “subtle” that all was, and then. . . .flatline. . . . .————————————)

You see. . . .
Tears For Fears, Simple Minds, Heaven 17, Psychedelic Furs, et. al- they weren’t “my groups”- my older sisters. As such, I have a hard time separating one from the other. Hot damn! Can I go one f-ing week without being such a numnutt!

Would love to hear what your mama thought. . . .
. . . .when that song gets blasted throughout the household, and you- Nice Li’l , singing your heart out! (My mama would wash my mouth out with Dial soap even if I air-guitared “Get Down Make Love” by Queen. “B-U-S-T-E-D, and disgusted, and cain’t be trusted!” my sisters would tease)

She still...
…doesn’t know I love that song. Her head almost detonated when she picked me up from a record store in the mid-80s with my new Violent Femmes LP. “Why would you want to buy something called Violent Femmes?” Fortunately, she never found my copy of Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash.

Just checked the lineup...
And the only performer I recognize on the festival is T-Model Ford. Clarksdale’s a hop, skip, and a jump from me but it’s also a hole. I HEART some Sam Cooke but they haven’t exactly rolled out the stars to fete the man. You would think artists the order of Stevie Wonder, Al Green, Solomon Burke, Sam Moore (of Sam&Dave) would play something like this (especially with Morgan Freeman behind it) but apparently not so much. Sad….

Question deerincrossfire?
How’s the surf out in Mobile Bay/Biloxi and Pensacola area. I’m flying out to Pensacola in early October- thinking of taking my boards. Just visiting some friends- but they’re “artsy” and aren’t down with outdoorsy-type stuff. My cousin Stephanie lives in Mobile and she wants to learn – haven’t seen her in like 15 years. I’m gonna book some lodgings in Biloxi on my way out, heard it’s jumping out there. (anybody know anything about Pensacola?)

Bix I’d love to help you but I live in Memphis (for two more weeks anyway) then Jackson, MS so I’m a good way from the water. I can tell you the surf on the Mississippi River’s pretty awful (unless you wanna ride in the wake of a garbage barge).

Alright, thanks a bunch anyway
I’ve got some surfer sites I’m checking out and some review sites for fun-stuff in Pensacola and Biloxi. I might just “rent” some boards, but bring my own wetsuits. Saw your R10. . . . .f_cking righteous. Love the Rose Royce and Chi-lites selections, A LOT!

P'Cola
Bix-At times P’Cola and the panhandle has some decent surf, most of the time its pretty flat. The fall and winter are probably your best times for good surf though. I would suggest renting a board. Innerlight (Pensacola) is a great little surf shop and they should be able to take care of you. As for Biloxi (besides the casinos), I highly reccomend heading over the bridge to Ocean Springs. It’s cool little artsy/hippie community with cool bars and resturants. Govt. Street Grocery usually has good bands fri and sat nights. Hope this helps!
That's great! Thanks OUTLAW711
I was just reading about the bridge and Hurrican Katrina last night. I was on the phone with my cousin and she’s amped for my visit. (she sent me a care package- she’s handy! she MAKES candy, cool hah?). Ocean Springs got pretty hit hard too, no? I was viewing pictures of it and it LOOKS BEAUTIFUL! I can’t wait. Hearing it from those firsthand is the best, so I thank you kindly, sir. I really do.

That's gotta be the baddest set of soul I've seen here!
’Member that movie “Car Wash”? They got scads Rose Royce. . . . and Richard Pryor in that flick is just icing on the cake (Daddy Rich), they got the Pointer Sisters, George Carlin, and when that dude sings “I Wanna Get Next To You” in the diner. . . . .classic!

Dang!
That brotha be HIGH! (I grew up with and all my best buddies were/are black. I remember watching comb their curls in the morning. by 10 years old, my best buddy Shawn, he stayed down the “natural”- never even went Jheri-curl- EVER! seriously- all those families, in the morning. . . .all them boys be cryin’ with their sisters combing-out they natty tops)
Having a ‘fro is some difficult business to be in, coming from them! (“Have You Seen Her” is a good one, too. Haven’t heard that kinda music in days, thanks for letting me take a trip down childhood lane. Then there’s my mama with her Nina Simone, Edith Piaf, Billie Holliday on Sundays. . . .and as a boy- I thought church was bad enough. Now? I play Nina, Simone, and Billie- especially when I miss seeing my mom. She lives in Napa, I hardly get to see her when I make it up to San Francisco. . . . .she’d play the Ventures, Beach Boys, Englebert Humperdink (sp?), The Outlaws, Patsy. . . .everything BUT soul it seemed. On Sundays. . . .after CHURCH while we were cleaning the crud outta the house! Whenever I smell Pine-Sol. . . .reminds me of those Sundays. Worst thing about all that. . . .NO FOOTBALL playing or watching. Now THAT’S DYSFUNCTION!)
