The Crimson Tide and Canton

Thomashof_medium
Thomas's son, Darrion, stands with a bust of his father during the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Canton, Ohio today.

With the enshrinement of Derrick Thomas into the NFL Hall of Fame, the number of former Crimson Tide players so honored is now seven. In addition to the former Kansas City Chief, Alabama is represented by John Hannah (New England Patriots), Don Hutson (Green Bay Packers), Joe Namath ( NY Jets), Ozzie Newsome, (Cleveland Browns), Bart Starr (Green Bay Packers) and Dwight Stephenson (Miami Dolphins).

With Thomas's induction Alabama now stands at fourth on the list of schools represented in the hall, pulling out of a six-way tie for fifth (the inclusion of Michigan alum Ralph Wilson, Jr. this year keeps the Wolverines one player ahead of Alabama). The top nine are:

  • Southern California (11)
  • Notre Dame (10)
  • Michigan (8)
  • Alabama (7)
  • Illinois (6)
  • Minnesota (6)
  • Ohio State (6)
  • Oregon (6)
  • Syracuse (6)
  • Penn State (5)

and for the record...

derrion is a three-star recruit out of blue springs high school in missouri. a senior this year, news reports about his play suggest that while he may not have his father’s overwhelming physical gifts, he’s certainly possessing some of his dad’s ability to lead a defense.

This is great...

I’m glad to see DT finally in the Hall of Fame, and had it not been for his untimely death, he would have probably been a first ballot guy. At the very least, I think we can safely say that Thomas is the most dominating defensive player Alabama has had in the post-Bryant era.

And it’s also great to see us have seven players in the Hall of Fame now. Unfortunately, however, Thomas is likely to be the last Alabama player in there for a very long time. Unless Chris Samuels can really have a long, extended finish to his career playing at a high level, he’s probably going to be close but no cigar. Shaun has no chance, and honestly neither does Stabler, Bennett, and others. I hate to say it, but these last 10 years of shittiness from ’Bama football has permeated into the NFL, and that will take away our HOF candidates for a while.

The Snake http://3hmm.com/thesun/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/052209-spt-stabler-pix-011.jpg

My favorite!

If it wasn’t for his penchant for women and whiskey. . . . .? Well, there’s that and. . . .he couldn’t repeat his Raider magic in an Oiler or Saints uniform. But on his resume` at Oakland alone, he deserves the Hall. Plunkett is an all-time Raider too, but when the two met in that AFC Championship game? Plunkett won out and. . . . the rest is, literally- “history”, for Stabler. Man oh man. . . .what could have been? That Oiler team WAS BADASS, paper! Still, they had Earl Campbell, Billy “White Shoes” Johnson, R. Brazile- sheesh. The Snake (all-’70’s Decade Team QB w/Bradshaw and Staubach) DESERVES to be in the Hall. He does.

Seconded

I just love the Raiders just about as much as the Tide,…..just about as much.

Got a dip in my stride, cuz you fear the tide.

Hey MBCR- are you thinking what I'm thinking?

WHAT’S WRONG WITH WOMEN AND WHISKEY? (that should have made him A FIRST TIME BALLOT inductee! i mean. . . f_ck the what?)

I have a feeling . . .

Snake is going to get in — especially now that he is back in NFL circles. Could be wrong.

Shaun was on track — stats wise — to be eligible if he could have put together a couple more thousand yard seasons. And he had an MVP. It is not to be unfortunately. (People criticized his running style also so that might have been a problem).

Don’t count out DeMeco. He will likely have the stats and is going to be so well-liked that he could have a real shot in about 10 days. Agree, Chris is the only other possibility out there and its a real long shot.

by wey on Aug 9, 2009 8:35 AM CDT up reply actions

Well...

Stabler may get there, but I imagine he’s going to have to kiss a lot of ass before he does. And, frankly, his continued off-field legal troubles do not help his cause. And you are right that Shaun was on pace to get there, but he was going to need to continue his performance for another three or four years after the MVP season, and with the huge drop-off he had, it’s just not going to happen. I mean he pretty much went from MVP to out of football in all of about two years.

And you are right on Demeco, he has a shot. On the other hand, to get there he’s going to need another 10+ years of good play, and then he’ll have to wait at least five more years. Do the math, you’re talking probably 20+ years before he gets in, and he is clearly our best chance now among the young players.

Its amazing that

basically one game made Namaths career…without that win, there is no way he gets in.

Scoring against Alabama will be like birthing a child: rare, painful, and messy

by bammer on Aug 9, 2009 8:02 AM CDT reply actions

Well, but what a game that was . . .

But that is overstating it.

Football is not as purely about stats as baseball is. Namath was by acclimation the best QB in the league for several years and won the season MVP. He was also considered possibly the best pure passer ever seen in the game. There was also a sense that his career was cut far short due to his knee injuries. (This was not a Bo Jackson situation who had a few great highlight plays but injury kept him from having more than a cup of coffee in the league.) Namath was the most high profile player in the league for about a decade. How could you keep a guy like that out?

by wey on Aug 9, 2009 8:30 AM CDT up reply actions

Exactly

its called the Hall of Fame, not the hall of stats. Stats are a major factor but they don’t have to be the only factor.

"Killer's" NOT IN?

That’s as bad as the Stabler travesty! Prolly worse. Unbef_ckinglievable. (3-time World Champ, too!)

He has to be one of the Cowboys’ best linebackers in their history!!!!!

Just Wiki-ed him

He holds the Cowboys all-time record for tackles (743) and here’s the blurb from Wiki,

“In his 14 NFL seasons, Jordan intercepted 32 passes (tied for third-most all-time by linebackers), returning them for 472 yards and three touchdowns. He also recovered 18 fumbles, returning them for 37 yards.

More than 25 years after his retirement, Jordan still holds Cowboys records for career solo tackles with 743, is second in career assisted tackles with 493 and, of course, holds the career combined tackles record with 1,236. Jordan still holds the third and fourth highest totals of solo tackles in a single season with 100 in 1975 and 97 in 1968."

Talk about “laying the lumber”???? Apparently, he “heads the Lee Roy Jordan Lumber Company, headquartered in Dallas, Texas.” (oh, how apropos!)

I'm pretty sure...

… it’s 15 years, and then the induction can only come from the veteran’s committee.

by outsidethesidelines on Aug 11, 2009 1:02 PM CDT up reply actions

The veterans...

…need to get off their artificial bums and vote in Lee Roy.

I would also vote in Cornelius Bennett. There are other members with comparable resumes (Sam Huff, for instance). I still can’t believe Ray Perkins snubbed him for Vinny Testaverde his first year with Tampa Bay. To be fair, he didn’t really have a QB waiting for him…only a couple of guys named Steve Young and Steve Deberg. Silly Ray Perkins.

It would seem someone that still hold defensive records

for the Cowboys 30-40 years later should be in the hall. Oh, and 3 championships?

Damn straight!

We’re talking the Cowboys here, and they aren’t exactly . . . Tampa Bay. You know? And an integral member of any team with 3 Super Bowl rings had to be doing A LOT OF THINGS RIGHT! Especially in THEM days! I mean, OKAY. . . .alright. . . when you’re talking about Nitchzke (sp), Butkus, Ted Hendricks, et. al- . . .that’s stuff is HoF slam dunking!

Anyone wanna tell me LeeRoy ain’t dunking?

Travesty is the only thing that comes to mind. (for gosh sake’s. . . they just put in Bob Hayes and . . . nothing against Bob Hayes, he holds at least one Cowboy record himself- but they didn’t need his playing to win championships.

They needed The Killers, though. They needed him . . . .and he produced! Hall of Fame written all over his badass self! (I’m pissed right now. Gonna shoot some pool and raise some Cain tonight. With someone!)

Uh-huh, aight?

He dunking. (it’s what I SAID!) And. . . . . you did too!

(pool was cool tonight. pool was cool. didn’t raise too much of anything except large containers of various and diverse fermented beverages. one or two of which, may be actually called, “variously diverse” due to their cost and acquired taste. Also imbibed in an armangac, Resposados, and a few custom elixirs mixed here and there. got a “bike-ride” return trip home- from some nice girl who participated in a “Bike Mash” tonight in Venice. no raising Cain whatsoever, afterall. tranquilo, as a matter of fact. “huwwwyuwaaaaaaaa!”. . . . .i think i just hoked?!?!?!)

just kidding.

on the blowing donuts part. i’m eating leftover lasagna right now. i’m not anything but hungry, thirsty, and verbose right now!
