Alabama has surrendered 428 yards on kick returns in two games — including a 98-yard touchdown by Virginia Tech’s Dyrell Roberts and T.Y. Hilton’s 96-yard return to the house for FIU. Next closest in the SEC is Auburn, which has given up 101 fewer yards.

Via The Dothan Eagle, which also notes that between 1973 to 2002, Alabama opponents returned a total of three kickoffs for touchdowns.

So, you're saying there is a problem?

not at all...

…as long as the offense is cranking out 500+ yards a game. but, as kareem jackson notes in that story, i sure wouldn’t like to be on special teams during practice this week.

dood

we can’t be killin our offense and defensive dominance by giving this crap up. I think its a serious problem that is a glaring blemish on a top ten team. Top 5 teams don’t give this crap up and we gotta start acting like the rank our offense and defense deserve

PLUS I hate these plays being the only BIG HIGHLIGHT of the game WE WON

SERIOUSLY. All last year the only highlight anyone saw from the Clemson game was the freaking run back

(Your Team Here) sucks

+1

To me this is the most glaring problem facing our team at the moment and there really is no excuse for it. With the amount of physical talent we’ve amassed we should be able to keep the run backs to a minimum. If we don’t get this fixed right away it will come back to bite us in the ass. I guess the only positive is that we know it’s an issue and we can hopefully get it fixed before we hit the meat of our schedule. I’m just amazed that a Saban coached team can have such a glaring weakness in any aspect of the game that has nothing to do with the players ability.

Rereading my post

it didn’t come across as sarcastic as I meant it too…it was not serious but I agree with you.

It is a concern

Players like Dexter McCluster could really hurt us on returns in big time games.

Fumbles. It was always Fumbles

by saying that you automatically discount Dyrell Roberts and T.Y. Hilton as flukes

All games are big time and all players are big time.

KO coverage has to get better, period.

It doesn’t matter who the return man happens to be.

BENNETT: Dead? You thought wrong. Ever since you had me thrown out of the unit, I've been waiting to pay you back. Do you know what today is, Matrix? Payday.

Here's the idea....

just get a kicker who blasts it out of the endzone everytime. If you 80 yards on this D you deserve the points. Just my 2 cents.

by Destindune on Sep 15, 2009 11:33 AM CDT reply actions

you realize the highest touchback percentage from 2008 in the NFL was only about 20%, right?

also rumor is the KO strategy is kick inside the 5, stuff the KR inside the 20.

That is

a great strategy if our players stayed in there lane. They need R. Green to just sit at the 30 and wait for the return man to get to him. He would probably lead the ST units in tackles.

Auburn fans are like slinkys... not really good for anything but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

by IHC800 on Sep 15, 2009 1:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh I get the strategy...

and no one enjoyed it more when we ripped the arm off the VT guy and got the ball back (which everyone seems to forget so I call VT even) but I’m stil a big fan of go 80 on this D and you’ve earned it.

by Destindune on Sep 15, 2009 1:19 PM CDT up reply actions

I asked OTS

about this problem before our last game, and I had the same idea about getting a kicker with a stronger leg. I had no clue that the % of touchbacks in college football was so low until OTS told me about it.

Our guys are getting caught up with the blockers

and they’re not fitting into their lanes relative (yeah, Saban, I used it) to where their teammates are on the field. They’re opening that thing up like a cow during calving season.

between 1973 to 2002, Alabama opponents returned a total of three kickoffs for touchdowns

I just hope we’ve gotten it out of our system.

by Nico2.0 on Sep 15, 2009 1:14 PM CDT reply actions

And actually...

… from the 1974 Sugar Bowl until 1998, we didn’t allow a single kick-off return for a touchdown.

by outsidethesidelines on Sep 15, 2009 8:04 PM CDT up reply actions

holy Jesus. what a stat.

by brandonh on Sep 16, 2009 12:13 AM CDT up reply actions

I have to wonder how many...

…we gave up between 2002 and 2008? Ending in 2002 is a might convenient way to eliminate the most recent data for the sake of making your article look more dramatic.

by Nico2.0 on Sep 16, 2009 8:15 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't think any...

… I might be wrong, but the only kick-off return for a touchdown in any ’Bama game in that stretch (2002-2007) that I can remember is Brandon Brooks taking the opening kick-off of the second half back for a touchdown against Auburn in the 2003 Iron Bowl.

Then, of course, it starts with C.J. Spiller and Clemson in 2008, and then the two this year.

by outsidethesidelines on Sep 16, 2009 8:36 AM CDT up reply actions

I thought...

…either Brooks or Prothro took one back at Kentucky circa 2004.

by NiceLittleSaturday on Sep 16, 2009 2:22 PM CDT up reply actions

That's right...

Prothro took a kick back for a touchdown in the 2004 Kentucky game in Lexington.

by outsidethesidelines on Sep 16, 2009 3:21 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah me too

we are going to have at least one game where special teams will be the diff and if we are not much improved by that game we are screwed

The same things win that always won, and we just have a bunch of new excuses as to why we didnt achieve it!!! RDT

I just have three words !!

PUT IN DRE

No sense wasting good talent and he wants to play. Can’t you just see it, “Hey Coach, watch me take this returner’s head off!”

Got that winning feelin'

by skycaster on Sep 15, 2009 5:59 PM CDT reply actions

So...

Putting in Dre will solve all of our kickoff coverage issues?

I would love to see Dre out on the field, but Coach Saban addressed the “issue” last week by basically saying that he still has to prove himself in practice to become a more contributing member of the team.

by CaliforniaTide on Sep 15, 2009 6:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Dre is on kickoff coverage. I believe Saban pointed him out as one of the better gunners on the team.

by Kenny483 on Sep 15, 2009 6:54 PM CDT up reply actions

He’s a gunner on the punt team, I think, not on the KO team.

by Bama philosophe on Sep 16, 2009 5:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Right...

… Kirkpatrick did not play at all against Virginia Tech, and if he played on the kick return team against FIU, it must have been late.
