UPDATE: BlogPoll Calling: Week Three Ballot SUBMITTED
UPDATE: Okay, I've bowed to y'all's wisdom on a few items:
- BYU is dropped completely. No need to rank a mid-major with a loss (and especially as humiliating a loss as that one) this early in the season.
- Nebraska is also dropped in favor of a Mr. Irrelevant vote for Washington.
- Georgia Tech drops a few more spots after looking so bad against Miami.
- TAMU stays in because I said so.
| DRAFT | SUBMITTED | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Dropped Out: Arkansas (#18), Central Michigan (#25).
|
Dropped Out: Brigham Young (#7), Arkansas (#18), Nebraska (#20), Central Michigan (#25).
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A few explanations. As always, your feedback will be considered before I submit it for good:
- Alabama goes to the head of the class after Florida couldn't seem to handle a Tennessee team it should have comletely massacred. Same for Texas getting the jump; though Texas Tech is a more capable team than UT, the Longhorns had every opportunity to completely put that game away and let Tech stay in it for much longer than they had any real right to be.
- Southern Cal takes a big time tumble for once again losing to an unranked Pac10 opponent. They will not be back in my top ten this year even if they do run the rest of the schedule (unless Washington also runs the rest of theirs, making the loss a little more understandable).
- Should BYU even be ranked after that humiliation by Florida State? Tempted to drop them completely.
- Nebraska stays in for hanging on to the very end against Va. Tech
- Hooray for Va. Tech for continuing to make our win look good.
- Cincinnati takes a big jump after being wholly impressive the first three weeks. They haven't really faced a serious challenge yet, but they are a disciplined and well coached team and I like that.
- TAMU makes its first appearance in the poll after piling up ridiculous yardage with their new no huddle offense and starting out 2-0. With UAB (sigh) coming to College Station this weekend they should start 3-0 before what will be ridiculous shoot outs with Arkansas and Oklahoma State the following weeks, and I needed someone to replace Arkansas after they drop out. Plus, Joe Kines.
- Kansas also makes their debut because I needed someone to replace last week's Mr. Irrelevant vote, Central Michigan.

A few notes...
- I’d probably rank Georgia somewhere. Beating South Carolina and Arkansas was pretty impressive, and their lone loss on the road to Oklahoma State is a lot more of an impressive loss than many of them teams ranked above them.
- Cal didn’t impress me at all against Minnesota. I imagine USC gets it together and thumps them later on down the road.
- TAMU needed a shootout to beat Utah State, there’s no way they should be ranked. With the schedule they have left, they’re still easily looking at 4-6 losses.

Cal is going to run roughshod over the Trojans...
the forward pass is pretty necessary these days I hear.

USC...
… always loses to some crappy Pac-10 team when they show up wholly unprepared. I don’t see how the loss to Washington is any different. I imagine they, as usual, will get it together against bigger teams and win easy.
And frankly, had Cal been playing anyone other than lowly Minnesota yesterday, they would have probably gone down too.

They did get the cover...14 point road wins aren't to be despised!
I think Cal will drop one, but I do like their chances to go the Rose Bowl. Riley doesn’t make many mistakes, they have a good front four, and Jahvid is the real deal.

USC always loses to a crappy pac 10 team, and sometimes to decent pac 10 teams as well
see UCLA in 06 and Oregon in 07. they figured to be down this year anyways, and now that we’ve all seen just how bad their QB situation is (mitch nutstain is 1 play away from starting) it’s pretty much safe to write them off as a top 10 team as Todd suggested above… i’d also say that Cal has to be the favorite to win the Pac 10 at this point, or at least even w/ SC.

no love for the East 'Dawgs?
Sure, their “defense” is terrible, but a double digit road win and 2-0 in the conference is decent?

Maybe...
….perhaps I’ll rank UGA again and drop TAMU. Also considering dropping Nebraska and giving Washington a Mr. Irrelevant vote.

No vote for Auburn?
I jest. After the way their “defense” played against Noel Devine, they are destined for irrelevancy as well.

I am convinced that Pollsters are truly on drugs
(and I want what they’re smoking). The SID Coaches poll has all 59 first places votes going to Florida. There is not a single person, apparently, who thinks that perhaps someone in Austin or Tuscaloosa or Happy valley is a better team… really? And USC didn’t drop out of the top 10?
and Miami is 9 in the AP poll? really? 9?
Egads.

outside of our win against VT
Miami has looked the most impressive so far.

ga tech has no defense, and apparently FSU forgot how to cover the deep in route.

Quibbles
-I agree with everyone else the UGA has to be ranked somewhere in the top 25. You should be rewarding teams who play tough schedules to start the season.
-There is actually a legitimate argument that Auburn should be ranked somewhere as well. They have a conference win and another win over West Virginia. It may not seem extremely impressive, but it is a lot better than some of the other teams.
-Conversely, North Carolina, Texas Tech, Kansas, and Texas A&M have beaten no one. I suppose the best argument could be made for Texas Tech, as they played a competitive game on the road against Texas. I would still argue that both Auburn and UGA have done much more than any of these three teams.
-Also, not sure what to make of Cal. On one hand you really have to discount the opening blowout of Maryland, as Maryland lost to Middle Tennessee State and was taken to over time by James Madison. I do think the win on the road at Minnesota was a fairly quality win. The first two TDs that Minnesota got were ones due to great field position, and Minnesota only had 270 total yards.
-Greg Reid is a monster. Alabama has not missed on many recruits, but I wish Greg Reid would have followed his heart and went to Alabama.
You should reward teams that that play tough early schedules...
…so long as they win. That’s the only thing keeping UGA out right now.
Roll Bama Roll - The Champagne of Bama Blogs.
UGA
They did win 2 of the 3, right. Also, two of them were on the road against teams that had spent their whole off season game planning for UGA. I do not think UGA is a great team, but they still have talent and have done more than most teams.
Again..
Boise St #7 ?!?!!?! I can’t agree with that at all…maybe #15 but hell no they aint the #7 best team right now.

oh and GT should
drop at least to #20..i mean they looked TERRIBLE against UM.
I hate to say it…but what about FSU as Mr. Irrelevant?

GT...
…has also played 3 games in 12 days, so I’m cutting them a little slack.
Roll Bama Roll - The Champagne of Bama Blogs.
Complain if you want...
… but that bunch is BCS bound, so you can pretty much bank on them being in the top ten.
by outsidethesidelines on Sep 20, 2009 1:21 PM CDT up reply actions
not necessarily
if TCU runs the table then both teams will likey be within the BCS top 8, but only 1 team is REQUIRED to be offered a bid at that point. and the Rose bowl is required to host the next non-BCS team that makes it in… i’d say at that point, they’ll be looking for whoever will help make Cal or SC look good… so maybe that bodes well for BSU afteral?

FSU ...
spanked BYU. Yet BYU is ranked and FSU isn’t. That ain’t right.
by Lawboy on Sep 20, 2009 1:26 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
Agreed...
… frankly I see no reason to rank a non-BCS conference team with ANY loss on their slate this early in the year.

I'm dropping BYU...
…but after the Jacksonville State follies, I’m not ranking FSU yet. They are going to have to show that BYU wasn’t a total fluke before I give them a vote
Roll Bama Roll - The Champagne of Bama Blogs.
total. fluke.
And BYU is still BYU.

Penn State hasn't impressed me
They’ve played nobody and yet whenever I watch them it’s like they know they’ll ultimately win on athleticism and just cruise along playing just well enough to win. Which is fine. They’re 3-0. But, there’s no way in hell they’re a Top 5 team. Gotta put ’em somewhere, but show me something Lions. Do you have a pulse???
"That rug really tied the room together."
Not disagreeing...
… they’ve played nobody, but looking at their remaining schedule, they don’t play anyone from here on out either.
They probably will have to go through, at most, two ranked teams all year.

I'd drop Nebraska
They’ve beat no one and played a super sloppy bit of defense at the end in a home game they should’ve won. Georgia’s 2-1 is way more impressive at this point than Nebraska’s.
Not disagreeing...
…that they should have won it; however that was a road game for them.

so was Georgia's loss.

I didn't say Georgia's loss wasn't on the road...
I agree with Nico2.0 that Georgia looks more impressive at this stage than Nebraska. However, I was just pointing out that Nebraska’s loss was not at home.

Both Florida and USC
are weaker at the receiver position than they were last year. USC is really lacking and watching Florida against Tennessee yesterday really gave me a lot of hope because UT was able to shut them down.
Both Ohio State and Washington blanketed the USC receiving corps. Tennessee blanketed UF’s. I don’t care who you have running the ball, it’s hard to run against 8 in the box.
And I’ll say this about Urban Meyer, without Tim Tebow, his offense is not so spectacular (think 2005-2006 Florida). Even with Tebow this year, his offense is nowhere near as dangerous without Percy Harvin and Louis Murphy. They’re still the best out there, but they’re not going to be as hard to defense.
MATRIX: Bennett, I thought you were--
BENNETT: Dead? You thought wrong. Ever since you had me thrown out of the unit, I've been waiting to pay you back. Do you know what today is, Matrix? Payday.
Their tackling was also SLOPPY.
Even Mr. Spikes. I’d go Bama 1, Texas 2, Florida 3.
What you're seeing is team spirit. It's like the Holy Spirit, but more powerful.

spikes goes for the kill
not the non-highlight form tackle.

Replace Tebow with Dan Mullen
And that 3rd paragraph may also be true. Lots of season left. I’d be shocked if the Gators didn’t get better. Still …
