Nah, big difference
he isn’t talking shit to them, just making a statement. He also didn’t make it personal like the Miami hype machine did.

Weakest bulletin board material ever.
Ro: “They’re a good offense”
Akry: Did y’all hear that? He said we’re good! We’re not going to take, that, ARE WE!?
I'm wrong all the time.
lulz
“but we haven’t faced a defense with statiscally better numbers than teams we have already played. That’s bullshit, man! NO RESPECT!”

Oh, so you mean just focusing on part of the quote is stupid?
Got it. Thanks.
I'm wrong all the time.
Strawman.
I don’t agree with String, really, but you’re twisting this unfairly. Doubt you’d be saying the same thing if McClain had said “They’re a good offense and all, but they’ll be crying for mommy when we get done with them.” We all know that focusing on one part of the quote isn’t stupid, that is, unless it’s the irrelevant part.

well...
…its not like we’ve noticed any type of history of folks making great hay of selective portions of quotes and completely overlooking the context altogether.
folks wanting to read too much into this are gonna do it. it’s ridiculous to insist every comment by every player be vanilla to the point of being insipid.
True.
But the two situations are quite different. In Saban’s case, there’s no way he’s trying to diss the fans, and to make it sound like he was is ridiculous. In McClain’s case, even though it really wasn’t that big a comment, no matter how you take it, he was making the point that he felt like we’ve got a defense that can stop them, and they’re going to take exception to that. Was it bulletin board worthy? Probably not. But if it could possibly be taken as such, it’s ridiculous to focus on the first part of the quote – it’s not the part they’d take issue with. I wouldn’t waste my time arguing this, but it’s typical Pete and I can’t help it. Personally, I say let the players say what they want – Saban will teach them soon enough what’s okay and what’s not.

It’s not a strawman at all — you’ve got to look at the whole quote in context. Your example is both antagonistic and lays out a prediction, so the beginning point doesn’t sound even remotely sincere.
Ro’s quote is totally different. They’ve got a good offense, but they haven’t played the best defense in the country yet.
There’s just no bulletin board material here.
If one of Arky’s players were to say “They’ve got a good defense, but they haven’t played us yet”, that wouldn’t get me the least bit fired up. Arkansas has, arguably, a better offense than Tech.
I'm wrong all the time.

Also, if Arkansas takes this personally
then they are a bunch of whiny babies. And at that point, I think everyone of their players who take it personally should have to show their mangina’s during the CBS pre-game report and let Vern Lundquist and Orlando McCain judge who has the best bikini wax.

You got to be kidding...
I think maybe you should read the progression of this asinine post, top to bottom and then make an impartial decision who really appears to be angry and does not want to let it go. All my comments have been civil with the exception of one…which I did infact admit my mistake.
And I am glad you tattled on me, so yea you!…really, I need to grow up?
The point is that we don't make it a habit to call each other names at RBR
Personally, I could care less what someone like you has to say about me; I just don’t want to hear you calling me or anyone names in a blog just because you disagree with what we have to say. Fair enough, I shouldn’t have said you were full of shit, but you really need to choose an attitude/mood/whatever and stick with it.
Resorting to name calling over something that really isn’t that deep relegates me to seeing you are the one with the anger issue. Trust me, I am laughing at you and think this is hilarious that you would act like this, but at the same time sad that we have an RBR members who chooses to show his ass when he doesn’t get his way.
And, no, your comments have been far from civil. I strongly suggest you refrain from future name calling, or find a new blog to troll.

Say what you will...
… but McClain does have a point.
Missouri State was obviously a cupcake, and while all of the points against Georgia does look impressive, the UGA defense has been far from stellar to date. Oklahoma State — despite not being as good offensively as a lot thought — had no real problems with them, and even South Carolina looked pretty dang prolific against UGA. It should be noted that the generally incompetent South Carolina offense had almost as much success two weeks ago against Georgia as they had last week against Florida Atlantic.
So, lots of points, lots of potential, but not necessarily a proven commodity just yet against a really good defense.
However, in all fairness, a valid counterpoint could easily be made as well… the Alabama defense hasn’t faced an offense anywhere near as good as the Hogs either.

"We gotta get use to being on top. We are consistent top 5 now"?
How does that equal getting used to being on top? Usually when teams start running smack like this, they are begining a downfall. Just saying.
"How does that equal getting used to being on top? Usually when teams start running smack like this, they are begining a downfall. Just saying."
Really? And what do you have to back that up? Just cause you said that? So by your logic we are starting a downfall trend because we are “smack talking”? Actually, it wasn’t smack talking, just Ro stating the obvious and pepping us up a bit. What, we cant pat ourselves on the back? Seriously, its not that deep.
What I was stating is that we have been downtrodden (relative, for us) for so long we get scared when we should be displaying confidence. Are we, as a fan base, going to bitch and complain everytime one of our players displays confidence in our abilities? That wasn’t smack talking. At. All.

How about...
Miami for starters…1992. That was about the time they went to crap, and they ran plenty of smack that year. I am not saying this is a big deal or that “deep” and I dont think I said we are on a downfall. I have no problem with McClain pepping up the team, but I think you do that in the locker room and on the field. Its also great for a team to have confidence, but start patting yourself on the back and there is an issue. I really hope they are not busy patting themselves on the back and I don’t think they are. I also am not bitching or complaining, quite frankly I dont think its that big a deal, but still think stuff like this in the newspaper is pointless. Wether it is meant to be smack or not, I can guaratee you it caught Arky’s attention at the least…and prolly CNS.
Disagree
there is nothing wrong with patting yourself on the back now and then. Plus, comparing any attitudes between us and Miami of 92 is just wrong and way off base. You are taking this whole issue waaaay too deep.

As a matter of fact I made apoint to say I dont think we are headed that direction. I also said I DONT THINK THIS COMMENT IS THAT BIG OF A DEAL, just pointless. You are taking my comment waaay to deep. Miami
started to go to crap in ‘92? Uhhhh not really. They won a NC in 2001 and were cheated out of one in 2002. I think Butch Davis recruited some pretty good players there, perhaps you’ve heard of a few…
Ray Lewis (LB), Edgerrin James (RB), Bubba Franks (TE), Dan Morgan (LB), Santana Moss (WR), Reggie Wayne (WR), Jeremy Shockey (TE), Ed Reed (S), Andre Johnson (WR), Willis McGahee (RB), Sean Taylor (S), Kellen Winslow II (TE), Jonathan Vilma (LB), D.J. Williams (LB), Vince Wilfork (DT), Antrel Rolle (CB)
"A demagogue is one who preaches doctrines he knows to be untrue to men he knows to be idiots." -H. L. Mencken
My point...
2001 was about 10 years after ’92…for about 9 years after the loss of the NC to Bama…they were riddled with problems…from problematic players to NCAA. Butch Davis was brought in in 1995 as a new Coach to correct all the problems – Wikipedia:
University of Miami, 1995-2000
Davis returned to college football when he got his first chance as a head coach. Back at the University of Miami, he helped turn around a program that was in disarray. Not long after he was hired, the Hurricanes were found to have committed several violations of NCAA rules during the tenure of his predecessor, Dennis Erickson. As a result, the Hurricanes were barred from postseason play in his first year (despite an 8–3 record) and lost 31 football scholarship spots over several years.
And all because of one comment.....

Nice
try but you made an attempt to draw the conclusion that Miami’s “swagger” was directly related to their program’s decline after ‘92 and thats just patently false. Miami had plenty of swagger in the Butch Davis years. The teams he built were some of the most successful in all of college football during that time, and they had plenty of swagger. And Miami’s NCAA problems had more to do with Dennis Erickson than the level of swag demonstrated by the players.

I guess you will pull me in...
Don’t flatter yourself, you are not that good. First of all “swagger” and trash talking at every opportunity are two completely different things…swagger refers to a confident heir your team has, or a silent confidence in their team and team mates. Bama has developed swagger, which is great. The fact you confuse the two…seriously, you are ridiculous. Second, I never said their “Swagger” lead to their downfall…I implied, and try to pay attention here…their arrogance and trash talking at every opportunity was a clue they no longer thought they could be beaten and bought into the hype they could beat anyone just by walking on the field…this contributed to their drop off. Third, Butch Davis was brought in to clean up the mess Miami had become, sure they had some good players/teams in the 90’s, but if you don’t think they severly dropped off and were dealing with huge problems, you aren’t paying attention. And you think because a team has swagger, they are great? Again, ridiculous. Fourth, I never stated their “swag” caused their NCAA problems, but that it was one of the many issues they had to deal with in the 90’s. Again, you are trying to argue points I never made, please read what I write and at least try to argue that. I have plenty of points because you make so many incorrect statements. What I dont have is anymore time to mess with this, so go ahead and reply with some more responses to arguments I never made and then we can end this.
A meaningless semantic diatribe, but I'll continue to play along...
First of all "swagger" and trash talking at every opportunity are two completely different things…
No, they are not completely different. Let’s look at the actual definition of the word:
In the verb sense:
-: to boast, brag
Transitive verb
: to force by argument or threat : bully
First of all, I never said YOU said the word swagger. That was my word. You just didn’t understand my usage. But I’ll forgive you.
The fact is, there are really two major ways a program can erode. The first being from the outside (i.e. NCAA sanctions). The second being from within. This is usually when a certain level of performance (coaching/recruiting) is not maintained consistently. Miami experienced both of these in the past two decades. Did Miami trash talk more than other teams? Probably, but they also won more than most other teams. So trash talking is usually a biproduct of being successful, not contributing to a program’s downfall.
You see Sting, the thing is, you don’t like arrogant, trash talking players. Particularly if they played for Miami. So you want that to be the reason for their downfall. I’m sorry but that’s just not reality. So you can continue to defend a biased, emotion-based premise, OR you can save what’s left of your intellectual integrity and just quit. I recommend the latter. But, if you want to keep playing games, like the semantic game, or the condescension game, go right ahead. I’ll let you choose…

Ro!!!
I love it. I don’t think he’s talking trash so much as stating the facts. They’ve only played Missouri State and Georgia. And I don’t see our defense letting them hang 41 points like UGA did.
by Queen of the Universe on Sep 22, 2009 1:01 PM CDT reply actions
It should be noted that
UGA practically handed at least three of those scores to Arkansas with turnovers and special teams’ mistakes. I didn’t watch the whole thing, but Arky really benefitted from UGA mistakes more than they just flat out whipped that ass.

Arkansas
Arkansas racked up nearly 500 yards of offense. They are going to be a tough matchup, as they have probably have 3 quality wide receivers and a very good tight end.
Everyone knows that Alabama’s somewhat flaw is their dime package. It is not exceptional like every other part of Alabama’s defense. It is still good, and honestly a lot better than most give it credit for, but it is not exceptional. I believe that Arkansas is going to be very good on offense throwing the ball, and that is clearly a problem for Alabama.
Obviously, I still think just about every other matchup favors us, but if a team can throw the ball and score points they can be a problem. I am so happy that SEC football is finally kicking off!
do you like a vinegar based sauce? or tomato?
cause smoked pork butt is all we got on the menu this weekend.
yes our Pass D has room for improvement, but they’ll have no trouble handling whatever semblance of a fight arky tries to put up…

Underestimating
You are way underestimating Arkansas’s passing game. They have legitimately three, maybe four receivers that are going to at least get some time in the NFL someday. Also, they have a quarterback who can make any throw. Arkansas poses some serious matchup problems, like who is going to be covering DJ Williams?

There is a resposibility to being on top...
Gators trash talked early on, before the season started, but only the media (mainly ESPN) carried on the hype. Florida was quietly studying the Vols and came out and just played. Albeit they didn’t look stella they did come out on top.
There’e something to be said about quiet confidence. Gene Stallings and the 92 Crimson Tide had it and now it’s time the 2009 team assumes that quiet confidence role.
Got that winning feelin'
It ain't smack......
when you can back it up. Just don’t let your mouth overload your a$^&&^. And any other cliches you can think of, just do it ON THE FIELD!!!!!!!!!!!
There are 3 kinds of men. The ones who learn by reading. The few who learn by observation. And the rest have to pee on the electric fence to find out for themselves. Will Rogers
If Arkansas needs this to fire them up,
they were going to lose anyway. And if we think this will in any way make us less likely to win, then we’re not as good as we think.
What I’m trying to say is that it doesn’t matter. I was never a great athlete, but I know enough to say that bulletin board type things fade right out of your mind about three minutes into a game.
I’m not excusing pre-game trash talk. Even if it doesn’t really matter to the outcome, you still have to eat a lot of crow afterward if you lose. And it’s just not a real classy thing to do.
That said, is this quote all that bad? If anyone should be offended, it’s Georgia.
by Nick's Hat Band on Sep 22, 2009 2:20 PM CDT reply actions
It really doesn't matter who from the SEC
we play. There will be a good chance that some facet of our opponent’s game might be as good or better than ours. But, as a whole, we are in better shape than anyone else in our division. I’m just sayin’.
Chill
I don’t believe that’s really “smack talk” OR an insult to Arkansas, but more of a compliment to ourselves. Obviously it’ll be taken that way by Arkansas and will be pushed by the coaches…because that’s one of the duties of a coach, to motivate. Regardless, I don’t believe it’s going to impact the game or the outcome. I’m glad to see a little self pride and confidence by our football team
It's not the will to win, but the will to prepare to win that makes the difference.

To give everyone the idea of how ridiculous this whole argument is...
…even the BOL message board is silent about this one.
The sky is not falling.
‘92 Miami’s Lamar Thomas pretty much said “I don’t know why you guys are working so hard, you are not going to win”
‘09 Bama’s Orlando McCain said “Arky has a good O, we have a good D”

I find it kind of funny that
almost everyone is acting like shula is still coach… saban ain’t going to have us show up unprepared and unmotivated. even though he couldn’t get the team jump started early against utah last year after the SEC championship game let down… so that makes him 32-1 as far as a motivator goes. I have full faith believin’ our team knows SEC competition starts this saturday and they will be hungry to prove themselves. so what about Mallet… let him throw 500 yards on us. Mcelroy will throw for 300 yards and we will run for another 300.
so easy... even an Auburn fan can do it!

Isn’t smack talk, More like stating a fact, i like the confidence shown, the only real downside is that we haven’t faced an offense as potent as theirs either, i still say we have the advantage overall and it’s going to be close until we wear them down and take control which should be towards the 3rd quarter, but they do look better than they last year.

I would actually be expecting to read this thread if Rolando said ..........
" You know their defense really sucks and to be honest with you their offense has not played one filthy stinking defense with one dag gum ounce of talent, bobby’s wife has big thighs and cottage cheese cellulite and their mascot is probably the last animal on earth that I would like to A. have as a pet or B. reincarnate myself as in a beast battle of the world death match and I highly doubt noah even wanting his stinking but on the ark he probably snuck on like that fag leo in titanic (not sure he snuck on but at least i dont lose man points for referencing the gayest movie of all time) "

More bulletin board material
Responding to an incendiary quote from Alabama linebacker Orlando McClane, affable Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallet told reporters, “He said we score a lot of points on offense? That’s nothing compared to the points I’m going to score Saturday night with his mom.”
Nick Saban could not be reached for comment.

what with all the “protectionist” mud being slung on both sides of the steel debate, i thought his insights did nothing to further the debate and instead served merely as a distraction when we have the all important economic summit at Davos on the horizon. that sort of protectionist pablum might score some points with the home crowd but it does little in the way of fostering an environment where we can mediate these serious discussion with calm, level heads.
