Hightower has ligament damage that will require surgery and is expected to sideline the sophomore standout for the remainder of the 2009 season.
UA coach Nick Saban confirmed the extent of the injury with a statement this afternoon.

Gentry Estes with the bad news. Anyone know if he's played too many snaps to be eligible for a medical redshirt?

Isn't it based on percentage of games played?
I think it’s 25% or 1/4th, so since it happened so early maybe they will give him a pass. Hope so.

Gentry also
said in a tweet that Saban never said it was season ending…so there is still a little hope.

At first I was trying to think of what Breaking Bad episode you were referring to.

A medical redshirt probably doesn't matter...
… Hightower is an elite player, and frankly he’s a three-year player. If he returns anywhere near to form next year, he’ll be headed to the NFL Draft regardless. Even at the very worst and he’s not full strength until his “senior” year — if he doesn’t get the redshirt — he’s probably still NFL bound the following year.
Don’t get me wrong, I hope we try to get him one and all, but realistically it probably won’t matter. Unless he really, really struggles to recover from this injury, Hightower will be in the NFL at the end of the 2011 season regardless.
The medical redshirt is likely a moot point either way.

Totally agree.
Hightower has got one more year at UA redshirt or no. And hopefully we get him back good as new because next year we will have no McClain and we will need him more next year than this year.
By the way, I sure hope we don’t lose GMac to the NFL after this year. Although you might not think he is an NFL type passer, if he keeps playing like he is playing I could see some NFL teams wanting him. He doesn’t have gun, but he sure might be a Bart Starr type NFL QB.
I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.
300 lbs. men
who resort to cut blocking need castrating.
With my anger subsiding…best wishes and prayers to Dont’a for a full speedy recovery. We may can fill his spot adequately, but no one was more dynamic (could play 4 different positions) than Dont’a. Go kick knee rehab’s butt as if it were a 180 lb. runningback DH!!!!
I was kind of
hopeful that it was just a dislocation since it was a hit directly on the knee cap. This really sucks! I hope ricky goes nuts on this dude who laid the cheap block.
yea
I saw the hit in the game and I was yelling even before the replay because you could tell it got him. What a jerk, you know you suck when you have to cut block a dude half ur size. Dont’a was great, but this ligiment damage could end the greatness that his career had. Im not saying he wont be back out, but we all know what happened to Tyrone Prothro . . . . . . . . man that was a good catch

ligament damage and a broken bone of the magnitude that Prothro had
are entirely two different things. Hightower should be fine after surgery and recovery.

But has anybody heard the latest on Tebow?
by rolltidefromaz on Sep 27, 2009 11:26 PM CDT reply actions
Well...
… St. Peter was really, really worried after he saw the replay of the hit on HeavenTube, but the Holy Trinity consoled him with a lot of orange Gatorade and got him calmed down after a few hours.
And, actually, when Gary Danielson heard the news, he was so shocked that he accidentally gagged himself on Mallett and jumped up off his knees, ran out the door, and started driving immediately to Tebow’s hospital room in Lexington.
Fortunately, once Tebow was released from the hospital and all objective signs pointed to your typical run-of-the-mill concussion that won’t limit him in any real game action, ol’ St. Peter finally got settled down and he’s doing fine now. I’ve heard Danielson, though, is going through serious withdrawals because he is not going to get to suck off either Tebow or Mallett this weekend with them having to cover LSU v. Georgia in Athens. I think the only thing that is keeping him going right now is that he’s salivating at the thought of going down on Tebow in Baton Rouge.
Stay strong, Gary, stay strong.
