Creative Top 25
I got bored at work this evening, so I decided to create the Top 25 that many bloggers and blog readers seem to be clamoring for: a Top 25 in which no team is ranked above a team it has lost to. I've heard many people complain about Penn State being ranked above Iowa or Oklahoma State being ranked above Houston, but I never really thought about how easy/difficult it would be to create a Top 25 in which no team was ranked above a team to whom it had lost. This Top 25 was creating using the 41 teams currently receiving votes in the AP and Coaches' polls and all of the teams to whom they have lost. Surprisingly, there are only two real awkward clusters. The USF/FSU/BYU/Oklahoma quadrangle appears at the end of the Top 25 because, while USF is at the top of that particular pyramid, I just don't think that they are better than the teams above them. You'll also find that USC and Ohio State are not on this list. That is because USC's bad loss was compounded by Washington's losses, which were compounded by Stanford's losses, which were compounded by Baylor's losses, etc. So, without further ado:
#1 - Alabama (4-0)
#2 - Florida (4-0)
#3 - Texas (4-0)
#4 - LSU (4-0)
#5 - Boise State (4-0)
#6 - Virginia Tech (3-1)
#7 - Cincinnati (4-0)
#8 - Houston (3-0)
#9 - TCU (4-0)
#10 - Iowa (4-0)
#11 - Michigan (4-0)
#12 - Penn State (3-1)
#13 - Oregon (3-1)
#14 - Oklahoma State (3-1)
#15 - Miami (2-1)
#16 - Georgia (3-1)
#17 - Georgia Tech (3-1)
#18 - USF (4-0)
#19 - Kansas (4-0)
#20 - Florida State (2-2)
#21 - BYU (3-1)
#22 - Oklahoma (2-1)
#23 - South Carolina (3-1)
#24 - Nebraska (3-1)
#25 - Cal (3-1)

I am interested in...
ya’lls thoughts on how much VT’s success has opened everyones eyes to how good we really are.
va tech's succes certainly helps
but i really believe that if you watch us play, it is undeniable that we are a true force. people are TRYING to find reasons to call us overrated and just can’t.

We are the most complete team in the country.
Closest game was the Va. Tech game, and that one wasn’t as close as the scoreboard, and we still won by double digits. Think about it: We’re a third of the way through the season, and our one glaring deficiency (kick coverage) seems to be improving. We undoubtedly need to work on our short yard running game, decreasing penalties and mental errors and our red zone defense and DEAR GOD CBs, TURN AROUND ON THE BALL!, but this team doesn’t look to be seriously challenged (on paper) until we get to the quadfecta of USCe, Ole Miss, LSU, and UT.

Easy now
Let’s not make reservations for Pasadena just yet…..you have 1 quality win, and that’s a 10 point win against an ACC team.
I happen to think that the elite 3 (Bama, UF & Texas) are still interchangable right now and the jury is still out on all 3. If you sail through your next slate of games – ending with LSU, then I’ll salute the badwagon.
If you sail through your next slate of games – STARTING with LSU...
then I’ll salute the bandwagon.
enjoy...

We have plenty of issues ourselves
We have WR and passing problems, not to mention QB health issues. Plus, we still haven’t faced a really good opponent yet. But then again, I wasn’t claiming we were the most complete team in the country.
Nor should you.

Wow...
I never thought about how difficult an undertaking this might be. Am I to understand that you put us at #1 because of the strength of the teams we’ve beaten (in that they’re better than the teams that Fla/Tex have beaten?). Really cool, thanks.

Honestly, I put them there because I wanted to.
Nos. 1-3 are pretty much interchangeable. I was actually surprised at how difficult it wasn’t. If you think about it there haven’t been many bad losses among the good teams. The only teams that made my list of 50 who lost to a non-BCS school were Oklahoma State (undefeated Houston), Oregon (undefeated Boise State), and Clemson (undefeated TCU). Now, if Boise or Houston lose a conference game, then all bets are off. But as of right now, it’s all pretty tidy.
The one thing I did enjoy finding is that USC’s loss is, by far, the worst loss of any team in the Top 25.
FSU is stank, too

Yeah, but...
would ya’ll pick FSU to win over BC this weekend? I feel like we have to pick them on general principle.
Also, do I take Arky over A&M? Tennessee over Auburn?
Ack…so many teams I dislike it’s difficult to decide…

Which...
…general principle is that, anyway? The I-hope-FSU-wins-just-enough-games-to-make-Bowden-feel-he-can-still-coach principle?

Miami is a victim of circumstance.
I know that both Va. Tech and Miami both had to endure the rainy weather at game time. Yet I still believe if this game were played in a domed stadium or in fair weather that Miami would have prevailed. The rainy weather gave a tremondous advantage to Tech. Wet ball forced Miami to run the ball and limited their passing attack. Yet like I said both teams had the same circumstances and an unforseen advantage was clearly the difference in this game. IMO Miami rebounds this week and shows the nation why they cracked the top 10. OU will have their hands full in this one. I am sure the OU coaches were dissapointed that Va. Tech beat Miami. OU’s winning vs Miami at #9 would have put them back into the National Title hunt. Now if they win they were just expected to do so. OU’s only chance to re-emerge is the showdown with Texas. Va. Tech beating the #9 team puts them back into the national scene and makes the Bama win look more impressive. Probably the most impressive victory by any top 25 team so far this season. MO
