Craig Sanders De-Commits, Will Attend Auburn

The rumors had been percolating for a while now, and apparently they are true. According to Andrew Bone, Sanders' mother has told him that her son has de-committed from Alabama, and will attend Auburn. Sanders recently attended the Auburn v. West Virginia game in Jordan-Hare, but dismissed claims that he was waivering with his commitment to the Tide.

Coupled with the de-commitment of JuWuan James, this makes the second de-commitment for the Tide in the past few weeks. Obviously it's a disappointment to lose a player like Sanders to Auburn because he is a talented player, but I'm afraid that depth chart concerns got us with this one. We were already loaded at Jack linebacker with, at least, Courtney Upshaw, Ed Stinson -- and possibly Tana Patrick and others -- when Sanders originally committed to the Tide (and that was apparently a concern with Sanders even in the beginning), and the recent commitment of yet another Jack linebacker prospect, Alfy Hill, only made matters worse.

Congrats to Auburn on the pick-up, Sanders is indeed a fine prospect. As for Alabama, you hate to lose someone, particularly to Auburn, but by the same token I'm afraid this sort of thing is bound to happen with some prospects given how loaded we are at just about every position. It's simple... if Sanders comes to Alabama, he's probably a fourth or fifth string player who gets scout duty; he goes to Auburn, and he can very easily start as a true freshman. The good news, though, is that we are still loaded at Jack linebacker and Sanders departure doesn't really hurt us very bad in that regard.

exactly...

the barn will trumpet this as a recruiting win on par with the limosines, i’m sure. but the fact is as long as they are sniping players that want to get playing time versus playing on a championship-caliber team – they’ll never be better than our practice squad. and i can certainly live with that.

I might have to use that line

Auburn is playing with Alabama’s practice squad…

OTS

how does Alfy Hill compare to Craig Sanders? Are they similar players or is one more talented than the other? Any info from anybody would be appreciated.

Per Rivals

Alfy Hill 10 Position 77 National
Craig Sanders 12 position 199 national

for what it’s worth, Hill is #51 on the espn 150, #77 on Rivals 100. Sanders is nowhere to be found.

What you're seeing is team spirit. It's like the Holy Spirit, but more powerful.

Yep, Alfy Hill’s probably just itching to rape, deal drugs, and rob people the second he gets on campus. If only we’d kept Craig Sanders!!!!

It'll happen sometimes

Auburn is still really thin, so playing time is what Chizik is offering. It’ll be interesting to see how they do in recruiting once they have more depth vs. Saban, as compared to offering a lack of depth now.

Agreed

Immediate playing time is big for some HS kids. Hope he has a great football career but, never gets to taste what it is like to beat your biggest rival.

A few thoughts...

First and foremost, I’ll reiterate that Sanders is a fine prospect. Saban and company clearly wanted him and recruited him very hard, and he could have went to any school in the SEC. He’s no worse of a player now simply because he de-committed from ’Bama, and no one should spin it that way.

All that said, exactly what happened here?

As I previously said, I think this one is clearly a depth issue. Sanders was a pretty heavy ‘Bama lean for well over a year before he committed to Alabama, and his commitment came as no real surprise to most objective observers. And, thus, his de-commitment after five months from being committed to the Tide does represent a very unusual case, and in those cases there is usually some specific factor forcing the hand. In this particular case, I think it’s clear that the issue here is the logjam we have at Jack linebacker, and particularly the recent commitment of Alfy Hill.

Now did Saban and company run Sanders out of town, so to speak? I think the answer there is clearly no. Again, he’s a fine player and you certainly wouldn’t want to see him playing for your in-state rival.

With that point established, though, Saban and company surely had to know that this was a very possible side effect of their recruitment of Alfy Hill. We knew that depth concerns at Jack linebacker were an issue for Sanders to begin with, and that those issues would only become much more grave to our chances of hanging on to Sanders if we picked up another highly-touted prospect.

However, the staff clearly saw that we had an opportunity with Alfy Hill, and they felt the need to pursue him as well. And in all fairness, Hill is actually a good bit more highly-touted than Sanders by most of the recruiting "experts" — both Rivals and ESPN have Hill rated significantly higher than Sanders, whereas Scout.com has Sanders rated slightly higher than Hill — so he’s every bit as much of a prospect as Sanders is, and possibly.

My guess? Saban and company knew that getting Hill may very well ultimately cost them Sanders, but they ultimately decided that Hill was a good enough of a prospect to justify the possibility of Sanders reneging on his commitment.

All in all, again, you hate to see him heading to Auburn, but again in many ways it’s really a moot point. We’re already loaded at Jack linebacker, period. And so we need to add another top-end Jack linebacker prospect in the 2010 class, right? Well, to that end, we get Alfy Hill. It’s basically the same thing with what happened when JuWuan James de-committed… no you don’t like to hear it, but between James Stone, Damien Robinson, and Arie Kouandjio, it’s really no big deal. You lose a great prospect, but you replace him with another great prospect, and the recruiting train keeps on rolling.

Best of luck, Craig.

Bamaonline.com that his stepfather said that Craig looked at our depth chart for his position and decided to switch to Auburn. If you have a rivals account you can read this article on bamaonline.com

Sounds right...

… and this may be a bit of a controversial statement to some, but if he really wants early playing time, he does need to go to Auburn. Just look at their roster this year, they are giving true freshmen tons of meaningful playing time who Alabama wouldn’t even give the time of day on the recruiting trails. Meanwhile, in Tuscaloosa, we already have five-stars this year that cannot even get on the field for a meaningful snap, and at least one is a likely redshirt. What does that tell you?

Again, if he was even remotely interested in early playing time, he needed to go anywhere but Alabama.

And, frankly, this move is a good move for both parties. If your heart is really not in a place — and keep in mind that encompasses more than just the school, it’s the coach, the defensive scheme, the depth chart situation, etc. — then you just need to back out of it before you even begin. If you don’t want to be there, you’re just hurting both parties by taking up very limited space in the recruiting class.

Speaking of, before the recent decommitments, we had very few spots open for the ‘10 class. Now that two have been opened up, are there any prospects out there now that you see us getting as a result? In other words, now that we have a few more spots open, do you see us going after or getting a certain prospect (or two) that maybe we wouldn’t have otherwise with such limited spots?

Ladies and Gentlemen! Here come the clowns!

from some crappy barner board

I guess Bynes, Stephens, Freeman and the others are going to step aside and say: “Here’s you a job, Mr. Sanders” ? I think he came to his senses and realized that Auburn’s a better place. Playing time is a good bamzo excuse though.

from another pathetic pack of barners

My buddy (who is the biggest turd fan I know and an “insider” ) says that the coaches at the crapstone told CS he would have to leave because of Alfy Hill and some others they have in sight. Why cant they stand to lose a guy to AU without having to make up excuses?

from some joke of a vol board

Dropping like flies…no one wants to play for a cheater!

and i’m not saying anything bad about these guys cause they prolly all have guns

I’m waiting for the Bama excuses and the inevitable star drop on all the recruiting websites.

They are just haters........

Don’t hate the program, hate the process….. not rebuilding, just reloading.
With the depth that we have a RB, does anyone see that as a possible drawback to highly touted recruits also?

There are 3 kinds of men. The ones who learn by reading. The few who learn by observation. And the rest have to pee on the electric fence to find out for themselves. Will Rogers

by jtCRIMSON on Oct 1, 2009 10:51 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

it's not a drawback, per se...

we often look at it as a situation where we need to get a given player but the reality is quite the opposite. you have to remember that every recruit has to evaluate the opportunities a given program will offer him and evaluate if it meets their specific goals.

the fact that alabama has “stocked the cubbard” means there is now a serious premium on starting slots. but that doesn’t mean the program doesn’t offer a hell of a lot of opportunties for players willing to come on board and put in the work. remember, USC has a similar problem with talent and it doesn’t seem to hurt them year-to-year on the recruiting trail.

if barners want to make a big deal out of every incident like this, let them. it completely misses the point of what recruiting is really all about. alabama is no longer in the business of stocking up as much talent as possible, it’s goal is signing the players that best fit the needs of the program going forward.

as usual...

if you want to find a barner who can explain what happened with a minium of bullshit and a maximum of insight, you can rely on jerry formerly of JCCW and now of the war eagle reader.

is this kid a good player? yep
is this a recruiting coup for the barn? yep
is this going to seriously affect Bama’s prospects? not in the least.

and, most importantly, the man knows a good thing when he’s got it.

A 4-0 start and recruits forsaking crimson for orange-and-blue? These are the good times, folks. Better enjoy them.

you can’t argue with that logic even if you hate it with every fiber of your being.

by kleph on Oct 1, 2009 10:49 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

What a tough...

…decision: do you go after Alfy Hill at the risk of losing Craig Sanders? Do you want to lose a good player, whom you would like to have as part of your program, to your in-state rival? No. Are you willing to take that risk in order to secure the commitment of a player who wouldn’t play for your rival, but who is almost certainly a better player? In this case, the answer is obviously yes…but again…what a tough decision….
