Wow

and we got 2 first place votes.

the spirit of corky simpson lives on!

the first place votes were cast by Jon Wilner of the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News and Doug Lesmerises of the Cleveland Plain Dealer (Xen Scott would approve).

Three folks put us in the No. 2 slot; John Adams of the Knoxville (TN) News Sentinel, Adam Van Brimmer of the Savannah (GA) Morning News and Joe Rexrode of the Lansing (MI) State Journal.

Then there was John Clay Lexington (KY) Herald-Leader who put us at No. 7. I guess the Ole Miss Kool-Ade tastes too good for some people to let go of.

Wonder

if they’ll go wire-to-wire like ole Corky did. I’d imagine we’ll pick up a few more if we keep winning. Our defense is too good to ignore and our offense has the potential to be very good. Other than UF, ther just isn’t another team as complete as Alabama.

Little suprise here, and pretty much meaningless. We are in the same position we were last week, in complete control of our own destiny.

Almost, but not quite, in 'complete control' of our own destiny.

We have to get USC out of the way and move into the three-spot to be in ‘complete control’. Then, if the entire top 3 (Florida, Texas, Bama) wins out, we would get UF in the SEC Championship, then would face undefeated Texas in Pasadena.

At this point, if everyone in front of us wins out and we take out UF, we could be undefeated and looking at Texas-USC for the BCS title.

Here’s to another USC choke job!

I'm

not concerned with USC. No way we don’t jump them if we win out.

0% chance of this

if we win out and beat Florida, we would play for the NC. There is no way in this world the computers would rank either Texas or USC ahead of us in that scenario.

I agree..

but I’m filing this in the ‘but you never know’ file until it actually happens. USC would have a win over Ohio State and if ND has made it’s way into the top 10 by the time USC plays them, it would definitely be to the Trojan’s benefit.

I think

we would benefit from having the conference championship game. The Big 10 and Pac 10 should add a conference championship game if they want to send more teams to the BCS Championship Game.

BENNETT: Dead? You thought wrong. Ever since you had me thrown out of the unit, I've been waiting to pay you back. Do you know what today is, Matrix? Payday.

Stop it with the common sense!

It is much more awesome to talk shit about the SEC being overrated while avoiding a CSG and trying to weasel your way into a blowout loss to the SEC Champion.

I am, of course, talking about Jim Delaney, USC, Ohio State, et. al. all rolled up into one!

I’m as excited about watching this offense as I am about the impending decapitations our D is going to lay on people - Stuck in the Plains

One game at a time people.

….the talk about getting left out of the MNC game if we go undefeated is a bit premature…wouldn’t you think? Lets just beat FIU right now.

A big, hearty

AMEN! We have several big teams in our whole SEC slate to beat before we can start thinking like that.

COMPLETELY premature

do you realize that to even get to that game we would have to go through three teams that are currently in the top ten? lets just be happy that the first hurdle towards a great season has been passed and lets not overlook the cupcakes prepping for sleeper team arky

BYU hops from

…#20 to #9 in the AP? Sure, it was a big win, but to hop 11 spots is pretty massive. I thought only Notre Dame was capable of such leaps.

by Nico2.0 on Sep 8, 2009 4:51 PM CDT reply actions

In the preview article that I never ended up posting

I argued that BYU had a significantly better chance of playing for the BCS championship than Boise because if BYU beat Oklahoma they would jump into the Top 10 in week two, something Utah didn’t do until week ten last year. If BYU runs the table (and Utah and TCU have respectable seasons) I think they have to be in the BCS championship argument. I know that’s a BIG IF, but it’s certainly a smaller if than it was on Friday.

by rugman11 on Sep 8, 2009 5:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually, didn’t we jump from something like #24 to #7 last year after Clemson?

by zeke2029 on Sep 8, 2009 6:21 PM CDT up reply actions

No, we jumped from 24 to 13 after Clemson.

Then 11, 9, 8, and then 2 in week 5. Here’s the link: http://espn.go.com/college-football/rankings/_/poll/1/year/2008/week/1.

It was still a very fast ascension, especially in that crazy week 5.

OSU at #5?

really? Their win over UGA wasn’t THAT impressive…

Scoring against Alabama will be like birthing a child: rare, painful, and messy. - The Ghost of Jay Cutler

by bammer on Sep 8, 2009 5:38 PM CDT reply actions

True, but...

… once you get past us at #4, you have to deal with a lot of unimpressive victories over some equally unimpressive opponents. For example, Ole Miss struggling against a 5-7 Conference USA team. LSU looking very sluggish against an 0-12 Washington team. Ohio State needing a stop on a two-point conversion to avoid overtime against Navy. Someone has to be ranked there, and frankly OSU’s win was much more impressive than anything we saw out of Ole Miss, LSU, or Ohio State.

And besides, with Oklahoma having such terrible injury luck with Bradford and Gresham, not to mention Okie State knocking off Georgia, the prospects for their season have risen dramatically in the past week. At this point, I think the smart money is on them winning 10 or 11 games, and if you can do that in the Big XII South, I think it’s fair to be ranked as high as #5.

by outsidethesidelines on Sep 8, 2009 7:14 PM CDT up reply actions

dont forget

ain’t nobody fully resume ranking yet. it’ll all be an unholy mess for at least another month.

by kleph on Sep 8, 2009 7:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually

This guy has Bama at no. 1, BYU at no. 2, and Okie State at no. 3. Not true resume ranking, but the closest think a real voter is going to get to.

by rugman11 on Sep 8, 2009 8:26 PM CDT up reply actions

And honestly...

… I think we should all keep in mind that the polls are almost entirely meaningless at this point. All they are good for is meaningless chest-thumping from homer fans, and maybe as a nice pitch line to some recruits who aren’t going to six for five more months anyway.

Again, it’s really meaningless. The only polls that matter are the one before the final BCS is released, and the one after the bowls.

by outsidethesidelines on Sep 8, 2009 9:37 PM CDT up reply actions

well, i wouldn't say completely meaningless

if the pre-season poll is a yardstick to the expectations a team has for the season, then the initial polls are a reflection of how well they are matching that. in that respect, it’s a handy tool to understand where you stand in terms of meeting your expectations in light of other teams.

obviously, that changes around mid-season when the polls begin to be more of a reflection of what you have done this year versus what you were expected to do. until, in december it’s become almost completely a resume assessment.

the problem is when you expect the polls on one end of the season to be doing the job of the polls from the other end.

just for the record...

after almost nine months of nothing but practice and scrimmages at most… I LOVE BEING ABLE TO BICKER ABOUT ALL THIS!!!
