Lane Kiffin Headed to USC
ESPN's National College Football Reporter, Joe Schad, has just reported via Twitter that Tennessee Head Coach Lane Kiffin has been hired to fill the USC head spot vacated by Pete Carroll. (Chris Low has now confirmed it as well). Kiffen has repeatedly declined to comment on the matter this week and Knoxville media has downplayed the possibility. Still, this has been the hot rumor today with other PAC 10 media folks citing "credible sources" on the matter.
::UPDATE:: It's official.

Exactly my thinking on the matter...
Sure it will be funny to see the meltdown up in Knoxville, but what they don’t realize is that Kiffin has yet to prove himself and probably isn’t that competent of a coach. Dumb move by USC in my eyes.

its actually a dumb choice for himi
The NCAA is meeting in FEB to decide what sanctions to hand down.

Very good point,
And I completely overlooked that aspect of the situation.

that is what made me doubt kiffin would do it
he’ll have an uphill climb if the sanctions are as bad as the rumours are getting. supposedly 2 years of no bowls. like 20 plus scholarships… dude will be a caretaker head coach and nothing more

good for us for next year. bad for us long term. though, it gives UT a chance to hire someone with self respect, and could possibly be good fo rht elong term health of our rivalry… to be quite honest, the last 2 coaches they’ve had, gave Bama fans zero reasont o respect ut. maybe now they’ll get a person with at least a shred of character and/or dignity.

growing up i always thought UT was our rival because we both shared in being great.
and auburn was our rival because they were in state and we just had to smash them. but the tennessee thing, i always understood it to be a rivaly founded on mutual respect, mutually high levels of competition, and class. general neyland and coach bryant etc…. since fulmer it’s gone to hell. maybe i was always wrong though

Other terrifying thoughts....

I will start it off
We laughed at Bama fans for getting so upset at Franchoni for leaving. This is where they start laughing at us for doing exactly the same thing. We leapt into the abyss. Now, it is very possible that we will begin the ten-year merry-go-round of coaches and perpetual mediocrity. They won’t hire Fulmer back because that would be admitting they were wrong. There isn’t anyone to promote from within. Everybody will want Cutcliff, but he probably won’t come because of his loyalty to Fulmer. Cower and Gruden will be talked about again, but who knows if they’ll be interested. And if one of them does come, and if he succeeds, the NFL will come calling, and they will go. We’re in Hell. Oh, and the giant sucking sound you’re hearing is the vaccuum left by all the recruits leaving. Signing day will not be fun.
Feel free to leave any others you find!
Please, gentlemen,
Please please please bring us a special offseason MELTDOWN TIME for this. Please.
Kiffin knows
Tennessee is taking a step back in 2010. He said so himself before their bowl game against Virginia Tech. He had a good Tennessee team. I know people acted like it was a rebuilding year, but he had a lot of veteran players at KEY positions. 2010 is their real rebuilding year. This really hurts them.
Mike Garrett probably downplayed the oncoming NCAA stuff the same way our athletic department downplayed it to Franchione.

Most of the highly-touted kids they have right now — and there are a lot of them, this was a good class — will not be going to Tennessee. They might not end up at ‘Bama, but they’ll most likely end up somewhere in the SEC.

I could see him taking it...
… I know he has the coach-in-waiting deal at Texas, but unlike the Fisher / FSU deal, there is no inherent timetable there. He could be waiting on Mack Brown to step down for another 7-8 years, and if Tennessee legitimately comes calling — especially with Urban Meyer being up in the air and Richt seemingly on the downside — that could be hard to turn down for a mere DC job and a promise for some future date.

the thing i dont get
is that even with all of this evenings goings on and such, the UT job seems liek a better one than USC. maybe i’m wrong, but i think USC is about to get a major Lack Of Institutional Controll penalty… at least thats what Dan Bickley (award winning, worth maybe 1/3 of a shit collumnist) said on radio out here today when the story was still just “why else would caroll bolt like this unless MAJOR penalties are coming down the pipe”

the usc folks seem estatic
but they are going to get the bullet tennessee just dodged right through the heart. look for washington and stanford to continue to improve while the los angeles schools resort to sniping at each other in the press.

it's going to be interesting to see what winds up happening
i’d like to predict that kiffin has just shown his ass, and true character, and that he’s going to struggle mightily to combat the effects of years of probabtion. but hell, i thought he’d suck last year at UT and they gave us our closest game…. who knows what’ll happen, UT is fucked in the short term, could be better off down the road though.
if the sanctions actually do happen to USC, then i’m betting on them entering into another 20 year slumber like they were in til 03 when they just missed out on getting a BCS title.

"So I want everybody to think here for a second, how much does this game mean to you? 'Cause if it means something to you, you can't stand still. You understand? You play fast! You play strong! You go out there and dominate the man you're playing against, and you make his ass quit! That's our trademark! That's our M.O.... as a team! That's what people know us as!" - Coach Nick Saban before the 2008 LSU game.

On the other hand . . .
Ted Miller is an idiot. He actually wrote, “Kiffin’s head coaching career has been spotty.” What? 40-25 at a major university is spotty. In coach years, Kiffin hasn’t even started having periods, let alone leaving spots on napkins.

Wow, Orgeron told kids not to go to class!
We have heard from multiple sources, including defensive tackle Marlon Walls that Ed Orgeron was on the phone tonight with some of the early enrollees telling them not to go to class tomorrow and attempting to begin the process of recruiting them to USC.

Lane Kiffin
learned a valuable lesson tonight. As a coach in the south you do not annouce you are resigning to take another job and then have the damn news conference on the campus where you just quit. lol He really underestimated how crazy some fans are about SEC football. lol
This upcoming season I'm gonna refer to Julio Jones as "The Magic Man" and Trent Richardson as "El Diablo"

well, i don't think being in "the south" has as much to do with it as you think
if there is a playtonic ideal of the wrong way to go about leaving a job for a better position this is as close as you get to it in this world. for gods sake, he made franchione bolting for A&M seem sophisticated and classy by comparison.

“I’ve spoken to a lot of coaches. I don’t want to say too much about other schools right now, but I did just talk to Coach Smart from Alabama a few minutes ago. Ole Miss has been recruiting me hard, too.” “Yeah, I really don’t know what to think right now,”
