Around SBN: Strikeforce: Cormier vs. Barnett Fight Video Highlights

ESPN's National College Football Reporter, Joe Schad, has just reported via Twitter that Tennessee Head Coach Lane Kiffin has been hired to fill the USC head spot vacated by Pete Carroll. (Chris Low has now confirmed it as well). Kiffen has repeatedly declined to comment on the matter this week and Knoxville media has downplayed the possibility. Still, this has been the hot rumor today with other PAC 10 media folks citing "credible sources" on the matter.

::UPDATE:: It's official.

Exactly my thinking on the matter...

Sure it will be funny to see the meltdown up in Knoxville, but what they don’t realize is that Kiffin has yet to prove himself and probably isn’t that competent of a coach. Dumb move by USC in my eyes.

Very good point,

that is what made me doubt kiffin would do it

he’ll have an uphill climb if the sanctions are as bad as the rumours are getting. supposedly 2 years of no bowls. like 20 plus scholarships… dude will be a caretaker head coach and nothing more

this is exactly what i thought.

good for us for next year. bad for us long term. though, it gives UT a chance to hire someone with self respect, and could possibly be good fo rht elong term health of our rivalry… to be quite honest, the last 2 coaches they’ve had, gave Bama fans zero reasont o respect ut. maybe now they’ll get a person with at least a shred of character and/or dignity.

growing up i always thought UT was our rival because we both shared in being great.

and auburn was our rival because they were in state and we just had to smash them. but the tennessee thing, i always understood it to be a rivaly founded on mutual respect, mutually high levels of competition, and class. general neyland and coach bryant etc…. since fulmer it’s gone to hell. maybe i was always wrong though

My only

fear is that now UT could somehow luck into a really good coach and not a clown. Let’s be honest they could be a threat to our dominace with a good coach.

As far as USC- they are going get what they deserve.

I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.

I will start it off
We laughed at Bama fans for getting so upset at Franchoni for leaving. This is where they start laughing at us for doing exactly the same thing. We leapt into the abyss. Now, it is very possible that we will begin the ten-year merry-go-round of coaches and perpetual mediocrity. They won’t hire Fulmer back because that would be admitting they were wrong. There isn’t anyone to promote from within. Everybody will want Cutcliff, but he probably won’t come because of his loyalty to Fulmer. Cower and Gruden will be talked about again, but who knows if they’ll be interested. And if one of them does come, and if he succeeds, the NFL will come calling, and they will go. We’re in Hell. Oh, and the giant sucking sound you’re hearing is the vaccuum left by all the recruits leaving. Signing day will not be fun.

Feel free to leave any others you find!

Kiffin knows

Tennessee is taking a step back in 2010. He said so himself before their bowl game against Virginia Tech. He had a good Tennessee team. I know people acted like it was a rebuilding year, but he had a lot of veteran players at KEY positions. 2010 is their real rebuilding year. This really hurts them.

Mike Garrett probably downplayed the oncoming NCAA stuff the same way our athletic department downplayed it to Franchione.

In all seriousness, though...

… reports are everywhere that Norm Chow will be the OC at USC. I’ll give him credit, it looks like a damn fine staff. Norm Chow and Monte Kiffin on the same team with all of that talent? Fuck…

A lot of the Tennessee people think they are getting Will Muschamp. Maybe so, it’d be a good hire if so, but we’ll have to see if that is just wishful thinking right now.

Most of the highly-touted kids they have right now — and there are a lot of them, this was a good class — will not be going to Tennessee. They might not end up at ‘Bama, but they’ll most likely end up somewhere in the SEC.

… think of the setup they will have: Norm Chow as OC, Monte Kiffin as DC, and Lane Kiffin and Ed Orgeron to recruit a program that practically recruits itself.

That sounds like a damn fine hire to me. USC did pretty dang good for themselves, especially considering the circumstances.

"High standards come from passion within...." --Coach Nick Saban

by NiceLittleSaturday on Jan 12, 2010 11:07 PM CST reply actions

I could see him taking it...

… I know he has the coach-in-waiting deal at Texas, but unlike the Fisher / FSU deal, there is no inherent timetable there. He could be waiting on Mack Brown to step down for another 7-8 years, and if Tennessee legitimately comes calling — especially with Urban Meyer being up in the air and Richt seemingly on the downside — that could be hard to turn down for a mere DC job and a promise for some future date.

… I imagine he coaches at least another four or five. He’s only 58 right now, and frankly he could coast at Texas for several more years.

He might not last another seven or eight years, but Muschamp will probably have to wait until around 2014 or so to get that job. It’s not coming open any time soon.

if the sanctions actually do happen to USC, then i’m betting on them entering into another 20 year slumber like they were in til 03 when they just missed out on getting a BCS title.
