UPDATED: L.A. Times coverage of Bama
The Times devotes significant coverage to college football, including the Rose Bowl and BCS Championship. Currently they have two stories about our beloved Crimson Tide.
This about Greg McElroy's Golden State roots and his patience while waiting to take the reins as QB1
and
This one about the team's first full day in California
SORRY! I had meant to be adding these updates as they became available. Unfortunately, I couldn't get to a computer for a few days. Here are some more:
Bill Plaschke's column on how Nick Saban is no fun
A great human interest story on how the Bryant Scholarship is still impacting lives today
Here's a story that focuses on our defense's approach to stopping the Horns, with a last sentence hat tip towards our tremendously improved graduation rates
You know they couldn't resist doing a story on everybody's favorite mountain, Terrence Cody
Varied updates on the Tide with a focus on placekicker Leigh Tiffin
Details of Mark Ingram's unselfish attitude accompanied by another bit of "writing"by Plaschke
A story on the epic clash (AARRGGH!) that will take place when our stiff-arming wrecking ball meets UT's stellar rushing D
It's interesting to read about the players we know so well in the words of foreigners, and I will be monitoring their site for any new stories leading up to Thursday's game.
Enjoy!
FanPosts are just that; posts created by the fans. They are in no way indicative of the opinions of SBN and the authors of Roll Bama Roll.

I know I know
but it was at least better than I expected.
The article on Saban today, though……..rage

It didn't make me mad at all...
It just makes Plaschke look like a moron. I don’t know about “fun,” but Coach Saban is by far the funniest coach in football. Why? Because he doesn’t try to be funny at all. That line about “You know what’s fun for me? Practice” is priceless. Turning down dinner with the president for training camp is funny. I also think he was hilarious when he took down Herbstreit on the whole “David vs. Goliath” thing. Plaschke’s idea of “fun!!!” is the most boring kind. “Everybody must have fun. If you don’t participate in my idea of fun, then I’m going to slime you in the most cliched way to my mostly ignorant readers. If you don’t bow down to the media, then you’re just an Old Grump.”

Plaschke blows
As a Los Angeles native, I have to read his garbage all the time. You’re right on with your assessment.
Roll Tide!
P.s. If anyone is looking for a good sports bar in the heart of Pasadena, try the 35er in old town Pasadena. It usually get full with college football fans from both schools during the Rose Bowl. This game and environment should be great!!!

You play fast, you play strong, you go out there and dominate the guy you play against, and make his ass quit! That's our trademark, that's our MO as a team, aight, that's what people know us as! - Nick Saban, 2008

How do these idiots have jobs?
If I spout off conventional wisdom, no matter how banal and/or untrue it is, can I be a journalist too?

I enjoyed both articles
since we’ve not been getting a lot here lately’ I know I’m complaining, but are yall waiting and building drama and planning to unleash a flurry of articles next week. I’m jonesing guys!! I’m feeling like a sponge absorbing any and everything about this game. I need previews, updates, articles. I am about as anxious as I’ve ever been for any one moment to get here.
'Mark Ingram' is the Heisman Winner!
Wow that
post about Saban PISSED ME OFF! I hate USC fans and out here all we hear about is how good the PAC-10 is. Whats funny is that author who wrote the article about Saban also wrote one a couple days back about how Oregon is going to stomp Ohio State. What a chump…
Plaschke is not a USC fan
And I challenge you to show me all the Pac 10 is great articles. Put up, or shut up?
Plaschke claims LA is a Bruin-football town. You’re hating the wrong people, already. Do you live here in LA lbdasdog? I do, don’t know where you get your paper/online stuff. I’m religious on the OC Register and LA Times. Sursly, where’s the Pac 10 love?
You can hate USC and hate the USC fans, but . . . . . at least get your perspective on your hate. You can even hate just to hate, your perogative. But saying as such in a comment about an article written by a writer that comprehensively loathes USC to begin with, is dubious at best, silly at worst.

Word!
What do you think of his writing style, kleph? And, do you think he’s as undeserving of all those Sportswriter of the Year awards he’s won? Personally? I don’t have the foggiest idea what people see in him, and it’s not even about his articles about USC. His homer articles about the Dodgers and Lakers make me just wanna hate those teams. I used to love watching the Dodgers beat the Giants at The Stick, they were my favorite NL team – I’m an A’s fan. Now, because of Plaschke and the power he wields here in LA, I can’t hang with anything about the Dodgers, Lakers, or the LA Kings (hockey).

Word to the wary
LA-area rags, a breakdown:
At LA Times:
Chris Dufresne the best college football writer (or one of the best) on the West Coast. Better than any of the Colorado, Arizona, and Texas writers. Hilarious, intelligent, witty, totally sarcastic, oh. . . . .unfortunately- he hates Alabama. But, he’s no where near as bad as Bill Plaschke!!!! The reason I like Dufresne is because he’s at least honest and his intelligence on college football and his ‘access’ to practically any coach/team is unparalleled. I hope Saban puts this guy in his place because- he’s ‘gotten’ many-a-coach out here. They’ve never heard of him, but he’s 10 times better (journalistically) than Plaschke, 2 times better than TJ Simers, and barely better than Bill Dwyer- as a sports columnist.
TJ Simers – my 2nd favorite LA Times writer. He’s a capital prick, but he only makes fun of people who are conceited, stupid, or entitled. Amazingly, he used to completely hate on USC, now . . . .Ucla has gotten under his skin for the past 6 years. (the guys at BruinsNation and him have this back and forth. They ALWAYS lose! There’s nothing to NOT hate about BruinsNation, and I’m being as diplomatic about that as I possibly can. With TJ you either hate him or love him. Of course, for the past 6 years, I’ve loved the guy. What can I told you?
Bill Plaschke – read above. This guy has the worst style of writing on the planet. Has a thing for hugging Ucla’s nuts. Always, and I’m saying this without over-emphasizing it: he can’t help but be sanctimonious and vindictive. It’s part-and-parcel, Bruin-style! No joke. he has free reign and his stuff is of legend. He’s not Malmoud- or Murray- or even Downey-esque (legendary columnists of LA Times-of-old) but. . . .he’s as solid, hilarious, and informative as they all are.
Bill Dwyre – This guy used to be the Sports Editor for Sports, went back to being a columnist because he was tired of approving articles/columns he knew he could do better with. He writes mainly about golf, tennis, boxing, and horse racing but
OC Register: They’re all USC homers, not Pac 10 nut-huggers so. . . . word of caution if you hate USC, don’t read the OC Register. There are more USC alums living in Orange County than there are in all of the Westside. I’m in the Westide because I love architechture, culture, and vibrancy. The OC is practically just what you see on television. No joking.
LA Daily- never read it.

I’m in Paris, France right now and the laptop I’m on is in a Printemps off Rue Du Duras, near the Champs. It looks the same, but the key functions are a bit weird?

You guys see what I have to deal with in LA?
Not too many local area writers like USC. Dufresne, Plaschke, Scott Wolf & Jill Painter (LA Daily- I don’t read that shit because that’s all they do. Hate on USC) and the majority of the writers hate Alabama.
I’ll never give up on my teams. Alabama, because that’s all I knew growing up. USC, because I graduated from there.
It’s a bit of a pill I have to swallow if I want to read about college football on a daily basis out there in LA? Sucks, really!

Gary Klein?
Being abroad, I totally forgot about Gary Klein. He’s the USC beat writer for the LA Times. He’s not a homer, nor a sunshine-pumper. He’s very analytical, methodical, X’s & O’s-type-of-guy. He makes it a point to be as un-opinionated as he can- I think he’s a graduate of USC? He’s less color, less fluff- more reasonable and fair. If there is such a thing in sports-related writing. He’ll prolly do a few pieces on the BCS championship game. Read his stuff for the most unbiased of all the LA writers.
There was this other guy- used to write Dufresne’s column, his name is Lonnie White. I read some of his stuff a lot when I first got here, but he only writes occasionally. Don’t know why and never found out but . . . .as far as X’s & O’s? He’s the very very best at LA Times. (I think he’s a Penn State fan? could be wrong?)

From the article on Saban..
The destination needs to be the goal. But what about the journey? Isn’t the college experience supposed to be about the journey? What happened to celebrating the journey?
Um..around here Billy Boy…we actually celebrate wins…not almost…it was great to compete…just glad to be here games…fing tool..
"The goal is to be a champion," Saban said. "I didn’t say to win a championship. I just said be a champion. That’s our goal here. That’s what we want to do."- Nick Saban
Typical Bruin-fan
I’m not joking bammer. It might seem like sour grapes on my part (for what, exactly- though?) or because of the Trojan/fUcla rivalry that I say this?
It’s not.
A good majority of their fans are exactly like that. Not all of ‘em. Two of the closest in my circle of friends are Bruins- there’s only 6 of us. They’ve got the majority between us all. They’re down, they’re chill, and they’re way more than just tolerable! (to Krishna & Asher- sorry mo’s . . . had to)
But, get a little sauce in ‘em, talk about college sports (BLAMMO!) you got yerself an epic cunt for a Bruin. Bill Plaschke? He has no such excuses or qualifiers. He’s just awful as a person on many levels, yo!

Bix...
are you Bipolar? Your posts are all over the spectrum. You seem like an interesting person, don’t get me wrong. In my previous post I did a piss poor job explaining why Plaschke’s article pissed me off, and for that you then proceeded to chastise me. Now it seems as if you dislike this “tool” more than I do. I was not trying to say he is a USC homer, rather that he is jaded by the LA scene. Pac-10 is a one man marching band, but for some reason they get a large chunk of the national media time and so I am prejudice to believe he is a USC homer of some sort. This guy Plaschke and for the most part, the entire west coast media has their heads up their ass when comes to knowing anything about sports. They want coaches to be charming, warm and accessible to the media obviously not Saban’s MO. Anyways enjoy France I think, and go hit up the Basque region for me. I heard that place is BUMPIN!
I apologize!
My bad. I did think you were just lumping Plaschke with USC fans. For this, I am sorry.
Not bipolar, can you diagnose? I might need you. . . .for other things though? ;- )
Just tons of tasty French wine, oh .. . . .and a little Scotch. (my sister is not a Scotch drinker, been making her give it the old college try though yesterday. In the early afternoon, no less!
Go ahead and hate on USC, I won’t take any umbrage with that. But, I will take exception to putting Plaschke in our lot. We’ve got enough problems already, on our own. (wink, smile)
Roll Tide
fwiw: I have family down in Toulouse, near the Spanish border. No thanks on the Basque region. Shit’s really hot down there right now. However, Costa Del Sol all the way up into Barcelona? That’s the ticket! (won’t make it, just visiting for a few days with my sister. It’s the week of Epiphany, family tradition for us to be together. This year is my year to visit here, she visited the States last year. Bummer for this to fall on the year ’Bama’s in the BCS NCG, though. I’m gonna try to make it back on Thursday. God Willing!!!!
