I know

I am so torn…but the Trent gets the nod.

I'm having trouble voting against any play from the SEC Championship

I remember seeing this play and saying to myself, “There’s no one on this team who isn’t putting everything out on the field tonight”.

by atlpeach on Jan 27, 2010 7:17 AM CST reply actions

True

Greg didn’t have a great year. In his defense he didn’t need to have a good year for the team to have a good year, but I confess that his attitude toward his play (i.e. his blind evaluations of his performance) rubbed me the wrong way. At points I even actively rooted for AJ to enter the game, but that said, this play in the SEC Champ game is his moment, it’s his highlight, it’s him demonstrating to the fans the reason he was in charge of the offense. It was a hell of an effort.

I voted for Trent's run....

b/c before tha the game was scoreless and this TD started Bama’s momentum. Greg’s bunny hop, although getting the first down, resulted in a field goal which translates to a stop for the gators (12-3 rather than 16-3).

I remember watching McElroy's play and turning away, thinking

“Damn, another punt.” Then, I looked up and the ref was standing at the sticks and I was like, “what the hell just happened.” Of course I did the same thing for the Trent play, but GMac’s was in the SECCG, so he gets the nod.

I think

my man crush on the “hop” is well-documented. Now is no time to walk away.

gmac’s bunny hop made me go HELL YEAH! but richardson’s run made me shiver in silent delight in anticipation for the next couple of years. we knew greg could reach deep down and produce greatness but this was the first time we got a real good look at the greatness promised us when richardson chose to come to the capstone.

besides, the block mcelroy threw in that game is even more awesome.

I love the hop, but

Seriously.

Two guys had absolutely clear shots at Trent in the backfield, two other had decent shots, and he just shrugged them all off like so much pocket lint.

If it had been Ingram, Upchurch or Grant, I would have voted for McElroy.

But since it was a true freshman, I had to vote for Trent. These are two of my favorite plays. They both demonstrate the will of the type of players who refuse to be denied.
As much as I respect the effort and athleticism of McElroy’s play, I had to go with the Trent’s defining moment.

by crimson37 on Jan 27, 2010 8:56 AM CST reply actions

Trent’s run was great, and makes me very, very excited to see what he does this year and next, but as for what made me happiest at that exact moment . . . had to vote for GMac

I'm wrong all the time.

Very Tough Choice

I certainly understand the difficulty of making choices, especially when you try to gauge which made you happier, but the Richardson run against Arkansas was, in my opinion, the most impressive individual performance that I saw in any single play in college football last season.

I agree...

…but the hopscotch still made me happier, as did almost every successful play in the SECCG….

hard to not attribute...

a great deal of that to awful tackling on the Hogs’ part. It was a determined run, but he should have been stopped at least twice on that play. The second LB had him dead to rights and just didn’t hit him. I had to go GMac. And I agree that SEC CG moments are really tough to beat.

Granted, anytime that you . . .

get both arms on a guy and don’t bring him down, it’s poor tackling. But 6 Arkansas players had a legitimate shot at Richardson and couldn’t bring him down:

  1. - his hit was deflected a bit by Richardson’s stiff arm
  2. - Richardson’s stop and change of direction causes #5 to miss a lick
  3. - Richardson’s burst upfield keeps # 12 from getting a solid lick
  4. - hit Richardson hard but bounced off and fell right down on to his butt
  5. - another burst and Richardson moves just out of #36’s grasp
  6. - underestimated Richardson’s speed and took a poor angle of attack

Six first-string SEC defensive players had a legitimate chance to stop Richardson, but couldn’t. What are the chances of that happening on a single play?

Trent Richardson's Run

I agree with M. Johnson Defender, that was the single most impressive individual performance of the year. The ballet run down the sidelines illustrated perfectly how hard every player on the team wanted to win the SECCG… but TR took on the entire Arkansas team, it seemed like, and just DOMINATED them. Ran ’em over, ran through ’em, and then outran ’em to the endzone. Like Prothro making that impossible catch against Southern Miss, like Shaun Alexander taking his separated shoulder and just WILLING himself through the Florida defense in overtime of the SECCG, like George Teague running down the fastest player in college football… TR showed what it means to refuse to be denied. Yes, I put that play in that league. Spectacular individual accomplishment, and I think Arkansas was broken in that moment.

Agreed

That run was amazing, which one made me happier at the moment… very hard to say. Looking back now, we see what kind of back TR is, and imagine if he improves as much as Ingram did over the offseason… we’ll have pleanty more of these to look at. Which makes me happier right now, definitely Trent. While both plays were amazing, the Arkansas run was much more promising.

If I was voting for biggest play or best play I would go with Trent

but if I am honestly basing it on which play made me happier at the time I voted for McElroy. I had a good feeling about the arkansas game even at that point when it was scoreless. McElroy’s play, at that point in the game, had a “this is our day, we are winning the SEC” feel to it and thus gets the nod.

by UAinPHOENIX on Jan 27, 2010 10:27 AM CST reply actions

i voted for mcelroy

but i keep watching the trent td for a several of reasons: 1) the leaping block on arky’s #10 by #85 (after he & #79 opened up the corner) absolutely cracks me up. that should qualify for ‘happiest’ but since i didn’t notice it till the replay on tv, i’m trying to stick with what made me happiest at the moment it happened. 2) watching #22 ‘scold’ him (not positive that’s what the conversation was when he grabbed #3 by the facemask after the play but am pretty sure, as trent was doing a bit of celebrating with the crowd) and 3) all the love trent got from the rest of the players – in particular #5. what a special group of guys…

This was tough

But being at the stadium and realizing the crowd reaction going from “oh, they stopped him in the backfield” to “OMG HEIZMAN WINNNURZ!” in less than 10 seconds was amazing.

very tough

the Arkansas game was the only one I made it to this year and that play was amazing (the crowd got louder with each missed tackle :-), but gotta give GMac his due. I just couldn’t not vote for GMac in the SECCG with a play like that to keep a drive alive and turn it into a 2 score lead.

by Bama_95 on Jan 27, 2010 11:49 PM CST up reply actions

Trent's run was poetry. . . . . .

. . . . .but champions were made on GMac’s run. His fighting words (“Let’s go be champions!”) just before running on to the field in the SECCG vs. Florida gave me the chills. Even though I found out “after the fact”, that under-rated m-fer walked (er. . . .hopped) the walk, and didn’t just talk the talk.

That play defined him, in my estimation. He wasn’t gonna let that vaunted Gator-D beat him. He had a game for the ages, the stuff of legend. If form holds true, I’ll be telling my nieces and nephews, children and grandchildren, or any other little person that I love in my life about that play, that insane team, and that championship season in the years to come. . . . . as my uncles, aunts, and family-folk had done for me.

Seriously, . . . . . .I got obnoxiously rowdy after that play and I knew, deep down inside, that we’d win on that day. First time, in a long time, that I cried after having watched a football game. The tears of joy are simply, the essence of sweet pleasure.

GMac it is!

Hardest one yet for me, by far. Ended up going with Trent’s run, just because he broke about 5 tackles behind the LOS and ended up with a TD, but the hop was a thing of beauty, and on a much bigger stage. Very close.

McElroy's hop made me happier

My dad was in the critical care unit and his nurses let me, my mom, my brother and my husband stay back there and watch the game with him. Despite the circumstances, we all cheered, Daddy included, when McElroy picked up the first down. We were so glad we got to watch that ass-kicking together, so I had to go with McElroy.
