Top Moments of the 2009 Season: Round One - Anders vs Peek

Back to the blowouts it seems.  Upchurch's Hokie leveling TD easily beat Maze's deep catch in the same game with 75% of the vote yesterday, and I'm pretty sure today's match up is going to have similar results.  Up for your consideration we have Eryk Anders's forced fumble late in the National Title Game vs Colin Peek's TD catch in the SEC Championship Game.  Vote away.

Damn.

Do you pick the nail in the coffin for the Longhorns? Or the nail in the coffin for the Gators?

I chose Peek’s TD because it was so well-designed and well-executed. Anders forcing the fumble was important, but it wasn’t an especially great play.

That said, I’m pretty sure I’ve misunderstood what the parameters of this tournament are all along.

THAT

plus, I just felt Peek needed some love because unfortunately a tight end in a Bama offense isn’t going to generate nearly enough plays to get much past the first round in a competition like this, and he was a great contributor this year.

Love this tournament, but the bracket really sucks.

You all seem to miss the point...

….EVERY SINGLE PLAY was awesome in it’s own right. We’re not picking horrible plays or shitty moments so the “good” ones can advance easily.

It's funny because we say it's a tough match-up every single day.

If a play/moment didn’t have significance (anything from the SEC title game or the BCS title game; also, Javy breaking the SEC record and Ingram winning the Heisman), it was a flat-out great play/moment in its own right.

If you doubled the number of plays, there would still be a ton of tough match-ups.

Man, this was difficult...

but I went with Anders. He’s from San Antonio (where I live) and something about a Texas boy taking it to the dadgum Longhorns really does it for me :)

I love this bracketology, it enables me to relive all of these awesome plays from this amazing season. I wish I could have them all together on one incredible dvd.

Plus it’s something to help fill in the time in the 218 days we have left ’till kickoff.

Me too....

I was the “666” vote for Anders…..is that bad?

I had to go with Anders...

The real nail in the coffin for the Gators was Arenas’ INT. Anders hit/ fumble basically won us the NC.

I'm surprised

that Anders is running away with this one. I really feel like it should be a lot closer.

Anders hit was monstrous and it certainly was a big play, but the Colin Peek TD was a good throw considering Greg had to fake one way, come back and drop it down over the defenders. It was a beautifully drawn play, executed perfectly, with a difficult catch made easy by Peek.

by 13thieves on Jan 29, 2010 9:56 AM CST reply actions

i'm surprised ANYONE voted for peek's catch

i mean, didn’t you KNOW we just won our 13th National Championship when #32 caused the fumble and #41 recovered? that was one of the happiest moments of my LIFE, not just the 2009 season.

So This Is The Number One Moment?

I don’t want to get into a chicken or the egg argument (if we don’t beat Florida we don’t get to play Texas), but it seems like to rank these purely because they happened last takes the fun out of it.

If it is the plays themselves however then we have an interesting question.

by 13thieves on Jan 29, 2010 11:29 AM CST up reply actions

the way i see it

the "which play made you happier’ parameter is looking at that play in that moment. that is my rule for me in attempting to get through the bracket. it’s pretty easy to look back and say ‘without that play we would not have accomplished so and so’ but todd’s original question was what made you happier – past tense. if it makes it all the way, #32’s forced fumble WILL likely win it all for me because i was pretty freaking happy at that moment.

This one was not fair....

But I went Holla McGee, er I mean Colin Peek. Considering all his FL ties, that play was extra sweet!

by BamaGirlinDallas on Jan 29, 2010 10:08 AM CST reply actions

Sorry Colin

That was a hell of a play and a great catch, but Anders sack and forced fumble was for me the moment I knew we had the game won.

by sixfoot7 on Jan 29, 2010 10:55 AM CST reply actions

Anders, no contest.

I love Peek and a tight end of his quality. A guy who blocks well, and then has the hands to burn the D when they think he “missed his block”.

But like all these highlights, it’s not about the play itself so much as it is the timing because they are all grade A highlights and career moments for the players. And the timing itself pretty much makes the anders play the winner. Reverse the timing and Peek wins.

by cal n on Jan 29, 2010 11:10 AM CST reply actions

I voted

for the Anders forced fumble. If he doesn’t cause that turnover we might have lost to Texas. Gilbert to Shipley was eating our secondary alive in that 4th quarter.

This upcoming season I'm gonna refer to Julio Jones as "The Magic Man" and Trent Richardson as "El Diablo"

I loved the TD by Peek.

But, by that point in the game I was starting to gain some confidence b/c we were moving the ball well.

Conversely, I wasn’t sure we could stop Texas and as for moving the ball….well, we all know how that was going. I had to go with the sack.

looking at YOUR wonder

made ME wonder, why the heck doesn’t anyone on the texas offense show any emotion at all after that play? they just start walking off the field after #41 recovers…and don’t even stop to help up their qb.

…why the heck doesn’t anyone on the texas offense show any emotion at all after that play?

Because they knew the improbable and impossible comeback was truly impossible at that point. There’s a certain point during a game when you know it’s over and all of the rah-rah and chest thumping and gnashing of teeth will accomplish zero. Texas had just hit that point.

Look at Upshaw...

…he has his eyes on the ball the WHOLE time. Just like his TD return at Kentucky, he was following the play even though he wasn’t technically in on it. It makes me inappropriately excited about his future.

i think you are right

it’s clear kirby smart recognized that the dependence on shipley that had hauled the longhorns back in the game had become their achilles heel and called this play accordingly.

watch gilbert when he takes the snap and see how he just stares at shipley on his right (no. 8) and gets completely shellacked from the back. it’s even worse when you look on the side anders came from and realize buckner (no. 4) is wide open there in the flat ready to take the quick dump off.

it could be argued that if mccoy was in the game he would have recognized something was up and either changed the play or called a time out when anders lined up unopposed.

but, dear lord, to be completely oblivious of the danger he was in is inexcusable. the texas offensive coaches did their young quarterback no favors on this play. not only was this a spectacular effort by the players on the field it was a great performance by our coaching staff.

I’m not so sure the OT was confused on who to block and i blame this play on the QB.

Typically, when expecting an all out blitz you’d block from the inside out. Forcing the guy furthest from the QB to make a play. On this play, we are showing a possible 6 man rush with Ro and Barron coming up the gut. This would put both guards and the center at a definite disadvantage. I would think an experienced oline would see this and expect the QB to adjust the play, either by checking down to the flat or by changing the play all together. Just look at the LT’s head. He’s starring right down the line, paying no attention to Anders.

Looking at the pre snap set up, im thinking the o line was expecting a quick pass by the QB. This is why the OT crashed down on Lo. Anders has the farthest way to run, so by letting him go it would give the QB more time. Actually if you look at the play, Gilbert has 2 quick options and both were in the flat. Neither option would have yielded much yardage, but they probably would have not been as disastrous. And again, Gilbert looks at the guys in the flat but chooses to wait and see if Shipley gets open…bad choice by the freshman…

So IMO, this was not the O-lines fault.

I missed...

…Peek’s TD whilst in Atlanta, so every time I see it and appreciate its beauty (best offensive play of the season?), I still think, “Damn! I can’t believe I missed that play….”

On the other hand, I jumped through the roof when Anders sacked the Texas QB, so it was a really a no-brainer for me….

It is awesome getting to relive each of these moments.
