Paul 'Bear' Bryant's gift that keeps on giving at Alabama
A very good piece by LA Times columnist Jerry Crowe concerning The Bryant Scholarship, established to ensure the children of Crimson Tide players will attend Alabama.

Great Story
And not to be all Negative Ned about it, but some of those players listed you would assume could afford to put their kid through school without financial aid.
I see what you're saying,
but if I was a gazillionaire and my kid could find a scholly somewhere to cut costs or get a full ride, I’d encourage them to take it. That’s one good way to stay a gazillionaire. It’s not like they were taking dollars away from other students or anything, since the focus of this scholarship is for the offspring of football players only (for the most part).

that's a fair point...
but who is the reader more likely to recognize? the famous guy who made enough in the pros to put his kid through college, or the legion of alabama players that went on to have relatively normal lives where paying college tuition is a huge concern?

I'm not down on the scholarship in general
I think its great in fact. There’s just a handful of names that seem out of place on a list of people applying for financial aid. Not that they shouldn’t be allowed to apply for it, I just hope whoever administers it has plenty of funds to go around for everyone who needs it, and as much as they need it, that they don’t have to cut back at the expense of so many applying for it.
