Alabama receiver Julio Jones said today that a right knee injury sustained in the season's second game hampered him for the entire first half of this season.
"It limited me a lot," Jones said.

for me, this explains a lot...
one of the most perplexing things about this years team was the sub-par play of jones. while still amazing at times his legendary explosiveness seemed missing and his timing with qb greg mcelroy completely absent.
at first i thought it was the quarterback who had some kind of injury (partially due to shots of him having his hip iced at the end of the virginia tech game) but it didn’t explain why he seemed to be doing well when he found his rhythm with maze, peek and others.
the type of injury julio suffered described here goes a long way to explain that drought in productivity. a year ago i had a patellar tendon strain at the tail end of my marathon training and it felt like i had an ice pick being shoved through my kneecap every time i ran. i was hitting my times but complete concentration was simply out of the question.
the timing of the problem (from the fla. intl game through USC) dovetails as well, explaining how both the receiver and quarterback experienced a late season uptick in production.

Explains a lot
Thanks for your many tidbits as of late. As a painter, with the bad economy here and weather too cold to do what work I have outside, I’d have gone crazy with sorrow by now if not for you and BON.

i think this is it...
or at least a large part of it.
a lot of the mcelroy to julio connection relies on precisely timed and coordinated passes. and that simply wasn’t there for a lot of the season. our own OTS surgically examined the situation after the kentucky game and found that the common perception of why julio was struggling was dead wrong.
in a lot of these games it would seem logical that when the first portion of the offensive strategy went awry, suddenly mcelroy was in a catchup position in terms of finding a rhythm and, of course, that was subject to a whole other set of problems.
this didn’t kill us because we had mark ingram to save the day in game after game after game until the passing game clicked down the stretch. in fact, i suspect one of the reasons ingram got the heisman is due to the over-reliance on him because of the problems we had with the air attack – problems that now seem connected to julio’s injury.
which suggests that a healthy julio makes ingrams chances of repeating as a heisman winner next season virtually nill but, paradoxically, suggests that at the same time the tide offense even more of a threat to opposing defenses.

regarding Ingram's heisman potential next year
It’s safe to say that Richardson will be able to take an even bigger role in the offense next year. Not to say Ingram won’t be our lead back or anything like that, just that he’ll probably be sharing the load more.
With the turnover next year in defensive personnel
we’ll need that continuity with the entire offense. Not to say that our defense won’t be good since some of the younger players did get some meaningful playing time. The defense this year wern’t always as good ( in earlier years) but learned the system and learned to be better players. Plenty of talent coming in and with our staff I’m sure they can make a great defense out of the talent we have, especially with guys coming in time for spring.

He's had an off year, and I don't think it's just the knee.
He’s had a lot of drops that were on good passes. A prime example is when he shut down his route in the SEC championship and let the ball go over his head on what would have been a 60+ yard TD.
Don’t get me wrong. He’s still played well overall, and he came up huge in certain games (the drive vs Auburn, the TD vs LSU). But he hasn’t played up to his potential.
What you're seeing is team spirit. It's like the Holy Spirit, but more powerful.

McElroy in the SECCG
2-6 on passes intended for Julio
10-12 on passes to everyone else
Of the 4 incompletions, one was thrown behind him and one was just good defense. But one was dropped on the first possession and the other was the one where he stopped referenced in your posts.
I love the guy, but I sure hope he’s a little more sure handed in the CG than he has been in most of the games.
That's not fair
As the #1 reciever for a team, it also means he is the guy who gets the other sides best defensive back to cover him. He is also the first guy who will get double teamed and so forth.
Stats don’t exist for the things a player does individually, they will only contribute to the team stats. By simply being on the field he relieves the pressure that would otherwise be on another player.
The same thing with Cody. He doesn’t light up the stat sheet exactly, but his effect on the field and what he does is rather obvious. He draws double teams and that opens up lanes for the linebackers and relieves pressure on the other lineman, because he is going to be double teamed in most cases.
They contribute even when they aren’t doing what counts in the stats. I don’t think there is a stat for number of times he drew double coverage, I don’t think there is a stat the number of times he drew the opposing teams best coverage defender. I don’t think there is an asterisk next to the catches of other players that say “Another receiver was double teamed and it opened up this receiver” etc.
DON'T DO THAT!
At first glance I thought you were saying Julio had a NEW injury. After reading the news about McClain’s virus at the top of the page it was adding up to be a shitty day.
