Around SBN: Despite Relocation Drama, Coyotes Overcome Adversity

Mark Ingram

I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere else, so I wanted to get some opinions from you guys on here. At the conclusion of the SC game, the camera showed Ingram sprinting immediately into the locker room. I must admit that I was a little disappointed by that. A few weeks earlier, I watched Ryan Mallett walk straight off of the field without shaking hands or congratulating Bama players and coaches and I thought to myself, "what a whiny little baby". To me, it was just disappointing to see our Heisman trophy winner quickly escape to the locker room after a defeat. It seemed a little cowardly. Did anyone else notice this? Did this bother you?

I am worried about our defense.

I’m also worried about the attitudes of our players following this loss, particularly that of Mark Ingram, an undeniable leader on our team. Maybe it was the alcohol or the sheer shock of losing a game for the first time in 20 games, but his actions concerned me. Do you have any thoughts on that? Because im perfectly capable of deciding how to spend my time.

a leader on the defense would be nice

but i’d rather have us find a way to defend the slant rout when we’re in man to man coverage.

Take a week off.

Seriously.

That you care in what manner one player decided to leave the field, with no context whatsoever (except that the SC fans were trying their best to storm the field), and you care enough to write a fanpost about it, suggests that you’ve lost all perspective.

You don’t know a thing about the situation, so you should probably leave the condemnations and recriminations to those who do.

Or, at the very least, man up and make your claims rather than this weaselly, “did anyone else notice this” bullshit.

I'm wrong all the time.

by PeteHoliday on Oct 11, 2010 9:53 AM CDT up reply actions

I don’t think it merely suggests that I’ve lost perspective, I think it is outright saying that i have lost perspective, and I came here to gain perspective from my fellow Bama fans. It bothered me, fucking sue me! I stated what happened, my reaction to it, and asked if anyone else noticed and if they have a thought. So, do you have a thought on it? Or do you just want to attack me?

The safety issue never occured to me, probably because the tv showed Gmac and others shaking hands with players after the game. However, that is definately a factor which is exactly why I posted this here because maybe I did need a little kick in the ass about it.

“Or do you just want to attack me?” This is Pete we’re talking about; if you catch his ire he’s going to lay into you. So, no, he doesn’t “want” to attack you, it’s just what his nature.

Having said that: I don’t think there’s much to this. There was a real safety concern of getting trampled, so that could be a reason. Or, he could have been pissed about the result, or pissed that he didn’t play as well as he could have, or pissed that McElwain’s gameplan took him out of the game. It may be less than ideal sportsmanship… but not of an order to really matter, in my mind.

You’re not the only person to notice this, however on the overall list of issues to be discussing after an epic beatdown I think this one ranks pretty low.

I haven’t attacked you, I’ve simply pointed out that you’re making pretty bold insinuations given bullshit evidence.

Doesn’t make you look very smart, I’ll grant, but you’re the one jumping to conclusions. I’m just pointing out the jump was made.

I'd have to agree with

Pete on this on …you are making something out of nothing.

And by the way, I didn’t see the camera because I was at game but I doubt if the camera caught all of Ingram’s post game. He might have shaken a few hands as soon as the gun went off.

And finally, after what happened after the game was over, I think all our players and fans would have been smart to get out of that place as quick as possible. There were serious safety concerns in and even around that stadium. I was sitting directly behind our band and I saw a girl in the band get felt up by an old SC fan…I promise you I am not making this up.

Like I said before,

I didn’t consider the safety issues 1. because our other players remained on the field 2. because I wasn’t there and wasn’t able to see everything that was going on. From what they showed on camera he sprinted to the locker room and on first glance it appeared that maybe he was pouting a little bit. And far be it from me to be a fan and have a fucking opinion about that! Apparently that was not sufficient evidence for me to be able to form an opinion.

It may not seem all that important to anyone else, but it did to me. We havent lost a ballgame in a really long time. When it became immenent that we were going to lose, my immediate thoughts went to the mindset that our players would come away from this game with. Because in my opinion, there is only one of two things that can happen from a crushing loss like this. Our players can get hungrier and continue to work harder to get better. Or they can develop bad attitudes and the train can go off of the tracks. Why was this a concern for me? See the Sugar Bowl 2 years ago.

Fair enough...

I probably did jump to a conclusion. Like I said, I was under the influence of a fair amount of alcohol, not to mention the shock of the outcome of the game. I know we’ve had an unbelieveable amount of success lately, but there may just be that part of me that still is conditioned by the prior years of mediocrity under our previous coaches. Some of the problems we had back then stemmed from bad attitudes, a couple times (2000, for example) the coaches lost the team. I may have just freaked out because of the loss, it has been a while since we’ve had to deal with that after all. I can admit when I’m wrong, and probably my first impression was wrong. Do you find it necessary to be such a fuckin prick about it?

ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!

by nashvillebama on Oct 11, 2010 1:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Basicly an attack...

for asking a question, and wanting others’ opinion. If you don’t agree, say so or move along. Sorry we’re not all journalists and don’t write formal reports on why the defense didn’t defend a slant route on one of the top 3 WR in conference 1v1. And reading the comments further down..safety was an issue? I was at the game, right in the middle of SC fan base. They encouraged us to stay to watch the end (to see if they stormed the field) and shook our hands as we left, thanking us for coming, and wishing us luck. As was the case at least 10 more times walking to the car, with only a few hammered college(possibly) kids cussing us to go home. SO get off ur dam horse, if your to good to answer then don’t. Your comments are more threatning than the “safety” issues in Columbia.

And to 5026, i wish i was in the mood to feel someone up after the game.

Most people

have brought to my attention the safety concerns on here in reply. That is most definately a good explanation for him hauling it off of the field. The tv didn’t show that, and I think since I saw other Bama players on the field it just didn’t occur to me. I certainly can’t blame him for leaving immediately.

He left the field for his own safety

The police and security staff did a nice job of keeping fans off the field, but how was Mark and the other players that left to know that the field storming would be haulted. I would have ran off that field too. It was the biggest win in SC history and clearly there was cause for major concern with 80,000 people running on the playing surface.

I agree 110%
my biggest worries right now is injuries

Upshaw looked like he is in bad shape again, Julio hurt his hand and it can’t be confirmed if he did or didn’t have surgery on it (hopefully CNS’ presser today will), Fluker was on crutches at the end of the game, I’m still not completely sure GMac’s head is on straight and it has come to light that Richardson has been wearing a boot during the week on campus. I don’t think I have anticipated coach’s press conference anymore than I do today…

This is off the subject of the original post (kind of)

but since we were discussing injuries, I figured I’d put it here instead of making a new post.

I just got a tweet from Jim Dunaway that said “Alabama had some key injuries Saturday, Nick Saban new conference will update us on a couple of BIG injury situations.” The all caps on “big” was by him not me. Now I am really worried.

Yup...

Dial called himself out for a sub with his right arm hanging motionless (reminded me of Colt’s injury). My guess was a pinched nerve or something, but he was done for the day after that.

Don’t know what Fluker’s injury was, but if he came back on crutches, high odds says it’s multiple games.

by Bamapride on Oct 11, 2010 12:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Hopefully you're right

Didn’t hear anything on Dial with the news on Fluker and Jones, so maybe it was one of those things where he just couldn’t play the rest of the game but will be fine moving forward.

Safety

I agree with the above poster who mentioned possible safety concerns. A lot of these players have each others’ phone numbers, etc. Mark (and the rest of our team, for that matter) can congratulate them on their own, but when you have 92,000 rabid USC fans itching to rush the field after the biggest win in their program’s history, it’s probably best to strap your helmet on and make haste to the locker room.

by Bama philosophe on Oct 11, 2010 12:12 PM CDT reply actions

I have to admit that when I played sports competitively,

I took losses quite hard. I don’t blame a player for taking it just as hard and wishing for some solitude, posthaste.

The coach is different altogether as the representative of the team. I would never expect that of Coach Saban, nor any other coach entrusted to lead our football team. My favorite midfield handshakes — ALL TIME — go to Coach Stallings, because he would make a point of wiping a victorious smile off his face before walking up to the losing coach. I can’t believe Coach Bryant really hoisted him on his shoulders after that Cotton Bowl!

Think back to how many times have we seen vicious competitors jog off the field after a loss? Mark is just as ravenous a competitor and I do not second-guess his decision after the game.

Charles Martel, Charlemagne, William the Conqueror, Raymond IV the Count of Toulouse, Godfrey of Bouillon, Baldwin of Boulogne, Henry II, Richard the Lionheart, St. Joan of Arc and Napoleon Bonaparte -- all of good stock.

first of all

Gmac isnt a heisman trophy winner with hordes of people wanting to talk to him, have his autograph and touch him. There are a lot of sick people out there and a lot of them were at the game Saturday. I doubt if there is a more upstanding gentleman on that entire team. Maybe you missed his heisman acceptance speach….it was heart felt and more genuine than any I have ever seen since Ive been watching heisman presentations. I am sure he had a good reason to run off that field the way he did…..that was a very hostile crowd with piss poor attitudes. Who knows what kind of remarks were made to these young men while they were coming into the stadium Saturday afternoon.

Slightly alarming to see the number of posts dedicated to this situation. It has been common practice at certain potentialy volatile stadiums (Ex: Ole Miss, LSU, Auburn for the players to be warned about the events that may take place after the final second tick off.
