Apologies to Greg McElroy

First off, let me apologize for making fun of Greg McElroy.  I was being a little hostile (albeit tongue in cheek, but I had momentarily forgotten I live in an overly sensitive world without a sense of humor so any ribbing--no matter how hard or soft--is unfair).  Sorry to those I offended.  Greg will be okay.  I'm a complete asshole and I deserve to be locked in a tower with an iron mask on my ugly face.

That said, here's my issue, here is the reason I get so frustrated with our quarterbacks sometimes.  I've always believed that a great quarterback can bring the best out of an average team and an average quarterback can bring the worst out of a great team.  Right now, we're not a great team and we have a number of problems in several areas.   It's truly wonderful, however, that the guys are playing hard and giving it their all and I'm very proud of them.  We lost a lot of great players, yet we're still in the thick of things halfway through the season.  That's proof of our coaching staff and character.  Still, I get frustrated.  Again, I'm sorry if my opinions offend some of you.

We are Bama.  We are an elite program, yet we have had a shortage of elite quarterbacks in the last forty years of our history.  Joe Namath was elite; Ken Stabler was elite; Scott Hunter was elite; Richard Todd was elite.  Since then we have not consistently produced NFL caliber quarterbacks.  I wish this were different, and I know I'm not speaking alone on this,  I get frustrated because I have watched--as a walk-on and fan--our program pass up or fail to adequately recruit great quarterbacks.  I have watched us sign quarterbacks who were not elite, whose ability was questionable, and I supported those quarterbacks, and I'll continue to root for Greg McElroy no matter how well he plays.

Honestly, we should have signed at least two of the following: Philip Rivers, Major Applewhite, Pat White, Jamarcus Russell, Tee Martin, et cetera.  It's unrealistic to say we should have signed all those guys.  But I remember some of the rationale behind not recruiting some of those guys and frankly, I thought it was stupid.  None of our quarterbacks during the time period in which each of those quarterbacks played was better.

The idea that we're not a team that needs a big time quarterback is silly.  And I get frustrated--sorry--when I follow Bama football and we never have an elite quarterback.  I know I'm not alone in this thinking.  I get frustrated when players like Rivers go to NC State, or when Major Applewhite isn't offered a scholarship or when Tee Martin goes to Tennessee.  I get frustrated when I watch teams load the box without fear against our offense.

I get frustrated when I watch our opponents sign better quarterbacks.  And I get frustrated that we are an elite program that doesn't produce NFL quarterbacks or top NFL prospects at quarterback.  I hope this changes.

I'm not going to criticize McElroy again.  My lips are sealed.  I hope we can grow as a team and I hope he can play as well as he played against Florida last year.  We're going to need to play great to beat LSU and Auburn.

Not sure what to think about GMac at the moment

I agree that there is a lot to criticize, and my comment on your previous post wasn’t directed at you. But I think our coaching staff is pretty pragmatic and if they keep McElroy in I get the feeling it’s not just because he’s been the starter.

I share the overall frustration. For all the “defense wins championships” talk (and oftentimes that is true), it’s not the only thing that does it. It’s been a long time since we’ve had an elite quarterback, and we’re definitely the kind of big-time program that should be able to recruit QBs with great success.

Hyper sensitivity and what not. I don’t feel bad for Greg. He gets a free ride to school for playing football, and no one is attacking him personally. Its not like he can’t play the position well, he is just inconsistent as hell.

I have to not make bad grades AND not perform poorly at work. Not too much to provide critique when these kids don’t produce.

GMAC....

has not really changed since last year, if anything has changed, he is calmer. The offensive line has changed. At the beginning of the year everyone said it was our strength, but we have two Sophs and did have a redshirt freshman starting. On top of that, I think there are a lot of almost delusional fans that think we were so great last year. We were, but we were far from perfect. Go back and look at some of the games last year. The VT game, you will go, damn…this is a team that wins the NC?

Everytime you get upset with GMAC just remember….if Tebow has come to Alabama, Mike Shula would likely still be HC and we would be lucky to be at Kentucky’s level. He might be 22 years old and brilliant, but they are all really just kids doing the best they can.

Sorry, I didn't realize Tebow could play every position at once

Saying he would have changed everything is delusional since we didn’t field an offensive line during Shula’s tenure.

Regarding Jemarcus Russell,

It totally wasn’t the Bama coaches’ fault. It just slipped their minds for the better part of a decade that Mobile was actually located in Alabama. Honest mistake.

Wouldn't have mattered...

Honestly, even had we not had the probation, we probably wouldn’t have gotten Russell regardless. Croyle was a freshman at the time, and he was not going to sit on the bench for three years waiting for him to graduate. Signing Croyle basically ended our chances with that.

In my book, GMac doesn't have to prove anything else . . .

He had possibly the best game an Alabama QB has EVER had in the SECCG last year. And the way he played selflessly in the BCSCG was in someways his finest moment.

GMac plays cautiously and lets his team win — he is not going to force a ball deep down field if there is not separation. That boring strategy led to 20-1. My guess that is how Saban wants it.

I agree, to win a championship this team is probably going to have to get more big plays, but we need to pick our spots. If you force a couple more balls in a game like last night and get turnovers you can end up losing a game. I say lets play aggressive in the games we need to play aggressive.

by Son of Roaring Dan on Oct 17, 2010 8:59 PM CDT reply actions

That is a really, really generalized and incorrect observation

he is 20-1 because of the team that surrounded him, albeit he has played great on occassions, and good mostly. But to say he isn’t going to force a ball downfield? He cant even find open WR farther than 15 yards downfield.

We are 20-1, yes, thanks to him and his efforts AND despite his play in a stretch last year and this year.

"can't find an open WR farther than 15 yards downfield"

That strikes me as “generalized and incorrect” — he’s had plenty in his career — and he’s had WR’s drop some too. I am not saying we don’t need more big plays — I am just saying the strategy on offense has worked pretty well for the last 21 games. Now will that approach lead to a championship this season? It sure seems like we need more big plays with a defense that can’t get off the field on 3rd down but its hard to knock how GMac has led the team over the last 20 games. We came out firing in the SECCG and GMac had a great game. We needed more big plays in the SC game when the D gave up 35 points but that game evolved in a strange way. I am anxious to see McCarron show his stuff too but a few rookie mistakes and we could have lost that game last night.

by Son of Roaring Dan on Oct 17, 2010 9:57 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not saying he sucks or he hasn't done anything good

I am grateful for him. But you seem to want to ignore the fact he has made some glaring mistakes the last few weeks, which is what I am referring too.

Yeah the D gave up big plays but hell we couldnt move the ball and Mac got sacked 7 times, 5 of which he should have dumped the ball.

Although I'm supporting GMac as much as anyone

it does seem like he’s hardly even had any ATTEMPTS longer than about 10 yards in the past 3 weeks. I don’t know if that’s all on him or if the receivers really aren’t getting any separation, but it hasn’t been pretty.

Taking 11 sacks in 2 games is not his form.

Per Jon Solomon:

McElroy has been sacked 16 times in the past four games, beginning with his two-interception game at Arkansas. Defenses had only sacked McElroy 22 times in his first 17 career starts.

So far this year (forget last years team)

If Bama was down 14-points in the 4th quarter do you think Gmac could lead the 2-minute offense down and score enough points to get us the win? (suppose the defense holds) I don’t think he can, the game at South Carolina confirms that feeling too. You can’t be a high powered offense without a gun slinging QB.

I do think

Croyle was elite early on, but injuries have taken a big toll on him. He had some poor coaches at Bama, a weak S&C program and some very poor O-line play. Let me tell you if Capps had played with Namath, Namath would have been too beat up to make the NFL.

That being said we are not a place that the real hot shot qb’s want to go…at least not right now. However, in order for that to happen, we have to turn AJ & Phil lose next year.

As far as GMac…well he is who he is. I don’t think anyone was that excited about him when we signed him. He was an after thought. He did lead us to an SECC & NC. Unfortunately the longer he has played the more other teams have figured out how to defense him. Thus our poor offense at the moment.

But no one has tried hard, played tougher, and been more a leader that GMac. No matter what happens the rest of this year he will always have 09 to be proud of as will all Bama fans. I think GMac would actually welcome giving AJ some playing time as I think what Greg wants more than anything is to win. I think using AJ would give us a different dynamic and even make GMac more effective. However our coaches must feel otherwise.

As much as I hate Auburn I hate Tenn. that much more.

And, if they are not going to over turn those fumbles after review- the 1st was a fumbke and the second was not, then we should just save everybody some time and end replay.

But a loss to au sickens me to the point of not wanting to go out in public, just in case I might unfortunately cross a war eagle’s path. After their season last year and their bragging at the beginning of this year, to see their totally unfounded optimism possibly actually come to fruition is more than a Bama fan should ever have to endure. And I have to be truthful with you, Cam Newton seems to be the real deal. Bama’s offense is going to have to score a lot more in that game to win it than what we’ve seen lately. Unless Newton gets hurt (which I do not wish for or promote) then I expect a much, much different game.

Jonah Hill, apparantley an Ole Miss student, sat right behind me at the game. Asked us how low is the percentage of Alabama fans that attended the University.

He now knows its higher than the number of times Ole Miss has beat Jax State.

Fact is

elite qb’s are few and far between. Of the qb’s you listed I would only count Rivers as elite and we kinda sucked when he was coming out of high school. Brodie Croyle was an elite qb out of high school and he has NFL talent but can’t stay healthy. AJ may be NFL quality, remains to be seen, and is the first top flight qb recruit of the Saban era. Kick ass qb’s are just hard to find. Look at all the teams in college football this year and how many NFL qb’s do you see?

I apologize to you if I don’t seem real eager to jump into a forced awkward intimate situation that people like to call dating. I don’t like the feeling. You’re sitting there, you’re wondering do I have food on my face, am I eating, am I talking too much, are they talking enough, am I interested I’m not really interested, should I play like I’m interested but I’m not that interested but I think she might be interested but do I want to be interested but now she’s not interested? So all of the sudden I’m getting, I’m starting to get interested… And when am I supposed to kiss her? Do I have to wait for the door cause then it’s awkward, it’s like well goodnight. Do you do like that ass-out hug? Where you like, you hug each other like this and your ass sticks out cause you’re trying not to get too close or do you just go right in and kiss them on the lips or don’t kiss them at all? It’s very difficult trying to read the situation. And all the while you’re just really wondering are we gonna get hopped up enough to make some bad decisions? Perhaps play a little game called “just the tip”. Just for a second, just to see how it feels. Or, ouch, ouch you’re on my hair.

In an age where defenses are getting faster, stronger and coaching staffs are getting larger

it’s a must (if you wan’ to win) to have an elite passer. Not a game manager but a game changer. It’s obvious Greg’s back in a slump. All I can say is AJ must not be as good as some of us think, otherwise he’d be in after what we’ve (as fans) witnessed the past few games. If we see the need for change surely the coaches see it to. The fact there isn’t any change yet says alot. Now, it all comes down to…how much longer will the coaching staff allow opposing defenses to play 9-in the box and run blitz us all day without making the adjustments needed to play good football?

Hold my beer and watch this.

Colt McCoy started yesterday

and he woulda won if he’d played. Seriously, though, we can’t deny luck plays into a factor in winning a championship. That said, Carson Palmer, Sam Bradford, Matthew Stafford, and Peyton Manning all played on teams with legitimate championship hopes that were derailed by injuries/lady luck/the Tide.

With all due respect

Place any of the following in today’s game

Joe Namath was elite; Ken Stabler was elite; Scott Hunter was elite; Richard Todd was elite.

And very different standards of “elite” emerge. The game has evolved so very much; the players are bigger, stronger, faster. The defensive schemes particularly have outpaced the offense in terms of complexity (for the most part). Snake and Stabler’s pussyfooting and lack of attention to mental discipline would most likely have resulted in them never even starting for this team.

I don't think that takes away from his point.

He wasn’t saying “If only we had Namath, Stabler, etc.” He’s saying “With the exception of Namath, Stabler, etc.,” Bama has not had an elite player at the QB position. I think we can all agree that the aforementioned were elite players of their time. With the exception of those players, Bama has not had a QB who was an elite player (in his own time).

GMac is the starter...

But the way the injury fairy has been whacking Bama players, doesn’t it behoove* CNS to get AJ some meaningful snaps now, before a Colt McCoy situation arises?

I tend to believe that GMac isn’t being honest and open about his injuries or he’d be more willing to air the ball out a little. I recall seeing him throw the long ball in the SECCG last year but not since…maybe he did against SJSU. My point is that it’s manly to try and play through injury but not at the expense of losing games.

The biggest thing for me with McElroy

Is that he seems to refuse to put the ball up and let the WR try to make a play on it right now. I refuse to believe that Julio before the hand injury could not beat a DB one on one for a pass in the air. If that aren’t open in the middle of the field or on a screen it seems that he isn’t going to throw the ball there. I love McElroy, so I hope he fixes this problem soon.

I agree, but...

on the other hand we did see Julio have trouble reading 2 or 3 deep passes earlier in the season, for whatever reason.
