Watching the Television

When you guys aren't watching Alabama games and college football, what shows do y'all enjoy watching on the television?  I've never been a big TV fan and if not for sports I'd rarely turn the thing on.  In fact, I probably don't have the thing on much from February to August.  I just don't get into many shows and I find that sports provide the best drama (for me).  This is probably my favorite time of year to watch with CFB, NFL, and the MLB playoffs.  This weekend, for example, I watched the Rangers blow a 5-0 lead against the Yankees on Friday, followed by Auburn and Arkansas, Lincecum vs. Doc, and Alabama and Ol' Miss on Saturday; and then on Sunday I caught some NFL highlights and Roy Oswalt's shutdown performance against the Giants of San Francisco.

The only non-sports show I watched happened to be Eastbound and Down, a fictional show about a washed up pitcher, and it's currently my favorite.  In the past I've watched Da Ali G Show, Reno 911, and The Chappelle Show.  I particularly enjoy irreverent comedy, in case you haven't noticed.

So out of curiosity, what non-Alabama and non-sports shows do you guys watch?

FanPosts are just that; posts created by the fans. They are in no way indicative of the opinions of SBN and the authors of Roll Bama Roll.

The Wire had it all

great plot and themes, great acting, daring storylines. Made you like the bad guys just as much as the good guys, so much so you weren’t sure which was which at times. Was not affraid to give exactly what you didn’t want to happen. If any of y’all haven’t seen it, you should.

The Office

is my favorite non-sports show. It is hilarious. I also like Rogue Nature, just because I’m constantly waiting on that guy to get eaten by something. I also like Steven Seagal Law Man, can’t get enough of that for some reason.

Eastbound & Down

Entourage and Party Down are in the off-season
Arrested Development and King of the Hill are over, but that doesn’t stop me from watching them when they’re on.
I compromise with the girl on some of these, so since Brothers & Sisters is also in season, I watch that with her. I really hate Sally Field.

Good Eats has been...

the only show I’ve watched with regularity the last 11 years. It used to only come on at about 1 a.m. and I didn’t have DVR at the time so I had to sacrifice some Zs to catch it. It’s just one of those shows that I could watch for hours on end.

Dexter
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
30 Rock
South Park (though it’s sort of hit or miss in my opinion)
Futurama
Good Eats

On Netflix I’m going through The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and plan on watching Battlestar Galactica once I watch the miniseries which isn’t available on instant-watch.
To continue the nerd alert, some shows that are no longer on but I love and have DVDs of would be Star Trek (original, Next Gen, and Deep Space 9). Also Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Freaks & Geeks, and Quantum Leap.

I keep hearing about the Wire, I think maybe I should watch that too.

I’ve been a Braves fan since I was a kid in the 80s, but now for some reason it’s not as big of a deal to me. I felt more of a connection to them when I lived in Atlanta, and I still keep up with them, but I don’t watch or check on them every day during the season.

to me because I wish that I had a Glee Club at my high school that I could have been part of. I so loved to perform, sing and dance but never had a stage to do it on.

And say what you want, those kids on the show are really talented. They use some really good songs in the show too. Mostly ’80’s songs that I loved in high school.

by CarrotTop4 on Oct 18, 2010 5:28 PM CDT reply actions

I like Big Bang Theory but there are a couple issues for me that kind of bother me

First is the laugh track. It just seems really overdone and in total contrast with the way most sitcoms are now (thankfully) sans laugh track.

The other is a little bit of an overuse of typical sitcom tropes. Still, I love that they have an abundance of ACTUAL nerd jokes and references. Good to have a show with actual nerd stuff instead of just some show purportedly about nerds that’s just an excuse to show a new hot woman every week (coughcoughChuckcoughcough)

Since I’m pretty conservative I watch FOX, especially O’Reilly and Hannity, so go ahead and label me as “one of those.” I also watch CNBC during the trading portion of the day.

As far as regular TV…well I just don’t get into any shows. I’ve never even seen an entire episode of any of the shows you guys mentioned except Law and Order. I loved that show until the original cast left and now I don’t watch it anymore.

Most have already been mentioned...

But here’s a few of my old favorites:
Firefly
Lost
Battlestar Galactica (the reimagination)
Arrested Development

And a few of my current favorites:
Chuck
Dexter
The Event
Big Bang Theory
How I Met Your Mother
The Office

A few of my opinions on the shows… The ads/commercials gave me the feeling that The Event was just another attempt to recreate the commercial success of Lost, but I found I quite enjoyed it once I actually watched the first couple of episodes. I feel like How I Met Your Mother and The Office have gone downhill, but as a huge fan of the early seasons, I keep watching. Wasn’t as impressed w/the last season of Big Bang Theory, but loving this season so far. Chuck and Dexter just keep getting better with each season.

Finally, my wife and I also watch Castle and House whenever we happen to catch them on; they’re just not the type of show we tune in for every single episode. On the guilty pleasure/“reality” TV side of the house, I must admit that I faithfully watch Survivor every week, my wife watches Big Brother, and we both watch The Amazing Race.

Well said....

Most people do not realize. it’s not how much you eat, but what you eat. I couldn’t do the six daily meals thing, so I eat my biggest meal at lunch and yogurt for dinner. My lunch consists of grilled chicken/fish, wild rice and steamed broccoli.

For the first 45 days, I ran 2 miles a day except Sunday. I stopped running while I started losing muscle mass and now run less.

Unity begins with the understanding that everyone is different and to accept them as such. - Confucius

by skycaster on Oct 19, 2010 9:18 AM CDT up reply actions

yeah i had to back off running.

I was running about 3 miles a day and noticed the same thing. Id go the gym, lift heavy and yet gain little muscle. I didn’t know that running long distance would affect muscle mass. So now i do 20 minutes of cardio before and after i lift and run a couple of miles on my off days. Im running my first 5k in Nov so im running a bit more than normal..

I eat 3 decent size meals a day with a snack in-between (usually a banana or peanut butter). Breakfast is high fiber carbs. My lunch is a turkey burger and steamed vegies. Dinner is usually chicken, lean pork/ beef with more vegies. Im looking forward to getting down to my goal weight so i can branch out a bit. I also told my self i couldnt drink a beer till i got to 235….so yeah game days are a tad different.

right now im just trying to lose the weight so i don't eat alot...

normally i don’t stay away from carbs. I eat a lot of whole wheat high fiber carbs early in the day and I realy try not to eat any breads after 4pm. Once i lose the last few lbs ill probably get about 100-150 grams a day if not more. Im really getting into weight lifting and if that continues, ill need the extra carbs to build muscle.

I'm going to tell you

I don’t care if you think running will effect muscle mass, running is what you need to do to live healthy long. I’m 57 and I run 5 miles a day, 6 days a week, in about 40 minutes. I’ve been doing this about 14 years. I’m sure some folks would think that is too much, that you need breaks, you need to lift etc. I can tell you that ever physical I have had for the last 10 years all my blood test numbers have been perfect, my resting heart rate runs around 48, and I am never sick.

As far as eating…well I eat whatever, whenever and it is absolutley no problem to digest and no weight gain. I still play all the sports I want although I finally stopped playing adult flag football at age 53 because I had lost enough speed that I couldn’t cover the 20 year olds anymore and I was hurting my team being about 25 years older than the next oldest guy.

But I’m telling you there is nothing like running. Furthermore if you at the human frame you can see we were made to run long distances. There are very few animals a good distance runner could not run down in 50 miles.

As much as I hate Auburn I hate Tenn. that much more.

I have gotten to a point where I can’t lift weights that hard anymore. My body is kind of busted up from it (I have a naturally thin frame) and I’m starting to run a lot more and lift less. This is partially because my wife isn’t into the weights and we can go running together.

I agree with what you say about using running to prolong life and keep the weight off. But I am reluctant to do more than three miles because right now I’m 6’2 and consistently weigh between 215 and 220 and my wife really likes how my body looks and I want to keep her happy. My shoulders, chest, and back have benefitted from heavy weightlifting; my abs, lower back, rear, and legs have benefitted from running and squats.

I do notice that I have more pain from lifting and on these days my focus is running three miles (sometimes I’ll go up to five, but I don’t like doing that too often) and I don’t have pain after running. Some days I’m too tired to do anything because I’m on my feet for 8-10 hours.

Lifting is also a problem because my pets like to jump on me when I’m working out (I have about $1000 worth of free weights downstairs) and running doesn’t pose that problem. I foresee myself becoming more of a runner and less of a lifter as I get older.

Im the same height as you

but my build isn’t naturally slim. I have very broad shoulders and have been north of 220 for most of my semi-adult life. The goal for me is 235 but with a lot of muscle mass. And then over time get down in the 220’s with the same muscle mass. I don’t want to be huge cause thats just to hard to maintain over time.

But like i said above, eating is the key to everything. You can run 5 miles a day but if you aren’t eating healthy, you’re wasting your time. You don’t have to eat organic or vegan to be healthy.

One thing I've tried

and had some success with is not eating carbs with all of my meals. Sometimes I will eat meat and a veggie and drink water with it. My body always seems a little bit tighter after that because it’s not trying to store/break down any sugars.

You’ll be shocked by how much drinking water instead of soda, beer, or tea helps because the sugar is what makes you gain weight.

It’s really important to cut down on sugar intake.

oh man i agree 100000%

I drink nothing but 2 cups of coffee every morning and water…nothing else. I was drinking more beer a few months back but vowed not to drink anymore until i got to 235 (90 lbs lost). I dont eat carbs after breakfast if i can help it. Ill eat some peanut butter to hold me over but no bread. If i do eat bread its just one slice of a high fiber arnold bread…got to get the fiber to keep you regular.

After a year of no soda, not even diet, i cant even touch the stuff. It makes me sick.

when I cut out sodas. I still drink Ocean Spray for my kidney stone avoidance regiment.

right now im dealing with some odd feet problems..

3 months ago i severly sprained my left ankle and partially tore my achilles heel in the process…Its taken me this long just to be able to run on it and its still sore as hell and the achilles especially needs rest during long runs. Just when i was getting better i some how injured my right foot running on Sat. I get home and about 3 hours after the run the bottom of my foot starts to hurt like hell. It feels like i bruised the bone or strained something…really strange.

So when my feet aren’t all jacked up I try to run 3 miles every other day and bike at least 20 miles on my non lifting days. I find switching things up works best..

but i totally agree that a consistent intense cardio routine is vital to long term health. I might be lifting heavy but i make sure cardio is a staple in my work out.

and on the eating thing....

you’ve been doing this consistently for years. I just started a year ago and my metabolism is still changing….it was about as slow as Vlachos trying to run down Trent on the screen pass… I have to be much more regimental in my eating to ensure im doing it right. I got to 325 by eating to much. Its a mental thing and I need to lose the weight before i adjust my eating habits from eating little to eating a lot. For me this isnt about being a certain weight…Its about being healthy for the rest of my life.

I recommend the same thing that prompted my mass weight loss regiment

after the nasty incident involving a reconstructed left knee and pins in the right ankle, I gained about 30 pounds over nine months. you know what helps? Cocaine, water and grits for lunch. Skinless chicken breast and black coffee for dinner.

I watch a shitload of television, though a lot of it is bad so I wouldn't necessarily trust my judgement.

In no particular order:

Mad Men
The Amazing Race
Family Guy
Chuck
The Event
House
Lie to Me
How I Met Your Mother
Castle
Caprica
Sons of Anarchy
Glee
Terriers
South Park
Bones
Fringe
Community
30 Rock
The Office
The Big Bang Theory
Smallville
Supernatural
The Good Guys
Good Eats
Human Target
Breaking Bad
Psych
Friday Night Lights

Granted, I don’t watch all of those shows every week. A lot of them I’ll DVR and then watch in bunches. Some of them are crappy guilty pleasures (Smallville, The Event, and increasingly Glee), but television is my favorite mode of storytelling, so I consume a lot of it.

Adult Swim is DVR Theatre

Check your listing for Cartoon Network. Sunday -Friday nights they have hilarious shows from 12 am until about 5 am EST. probably adjusted since you in hawaii. anyway. the shows on Adult Swim are funny, you can also watch old episodes on www.Adultswim.com

best Adult Swim shows in order of obscene hilarity: Childrens’ Hospital (yes, apostrophe after the S), Squidbillies, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Metalpocalypse, Home Movies.

other good shows: Always Sonny in Philadelphia, Mad Men, Eastbound and Down, Bored to Death, Flight of the Conchords, Boardwalk Empire, Big Love, True Blood.

after that you’re pretty much screwed. south park is okay from time to time. last weeks episode was funny. i’m getting too old to even enjoy the simpsons and family guy anymore.

shows i’ve heard are good but havent watched : Dexter (made by the folks who did Home Movies so it probably is good), The Whitest Kids You Know (sketch comedy on independant film channel which i dont get, so i dont watch) and soem other show on IFC that is about to start. it features David Cross and a bunch of the folks who worked on Arrested Development, it will also be on IFC so i’m gonna have to stream it off hulu to try it out.

Best DVD’s of old shows you must watch now: The Wire. best show ever. seriously hands down the best drama ever to be on television. The Wire. and MR. Show with Bob and David. show is so awesome ChineseDentist stole his screen name from it. Take it from me, and vicariously, Bo the RBR Bartender, Mr Show is FUCKING HILARIOUS.

and if you get CurrenTV, which i used to when i had DirecTV, then i’d say pop it on from time to time. Current is pretty cool. they have a weekly pop culture make fun of shit show, i forget whats its called, but it’s like Daily Show meets “the soup” only for people who can read an entire book. intellectual elitism/

I love Home Movies

Wow, people keep bringing up shows I forgot to mention in my post that are just fantastic. Actually, my favorite show currently on Adult Swim is Venture Brothers.

Home Movies is great.

I like the Whitest Kids U Know

Not as brilliant as Mr. Show (best transitions in a sketch comedy show EVER) but good stuff.

Dexter is half a fantastic pulp drama and half a sub-par police drama. Michael C. Hall makes it well worth watching in my opinion.

I'm a huge Braves fan

Eastbound And Down is my favorite show at the moment. I got the first season on DVD….“I can feel it in my plums” lol Will Ferrell is hilarious as Ashley Shaeffer.

I also like Robot Chicken…Yeah, it’s a strange name for a show but it’s hilarious.

My all-time favorite TV Series

related to football was Playmakers on ESPN in 2003. There is a reason this show only lasted one season and it wasn’t because of bad ratings. If you like football and haven’t seen it then you should get the DVD because it’s a damn good show.

I have a confession about Shannon Doherty to appease the football gods

it’s going to have to be during LSU/Auburn/Poss. SECCG. as it takes a while and involves one fateful 36 hour time period.

Ice Road Truckers – To see how the other half lives
Cops – To feel better about my own life
History Channel
Science Channel
Monsters Inside Me – To freak myself out
& Rizzoli and Isles – Because Angie Harmon is HOT

Oh, and The Nick Saban Show and Auburn Review (Just to see what Cheezstick will say next)
