Sports Shows to watch/listen to
I'm curious to hear some of the RBR faithful's opinions on various sports shows, whether they be television, radio, or podcasts. I'll go over some of the ones I watch and let you know what I think about them. Of course the Paul Finebaum show dominates the headlines in Alabama and now has gone national on Sirius. Personally I like it, listen to it a good deal, and call in every now and then. Love it or hate it, most people here know about it and already have their opinion of the show, so moving along...
Perhaps the most prominent show revolving around college football is College Football Live from the "Worldwide Leader". I've watched this show for years, and it was pretty good this summer with all of the expansion and other news. But during this season it's been boring. I wonder if it's just that I'm getting the news from other sources such as SBN, yahoo, etc. so that the content on CFL is old hat by the time I watch it. Then again, it may be that Palmer, Smith, and company aren't as engaging as some of the previous hosts. Regardless, I'm seriously considering dropping this from my DVR.
The other major ESPN college football show is "The Experts". It's new, loooong, and surprisingly good. They have a lot of personalities and "experts" sitting around for 3 hours talking about college football. The format allows them to go into issues with much more depth than you see on similar shows. However, the 3 hour duration and afternoon time slot means that you pretty much have to have a DVR to watch it, but if you have one you can watch it piecemeal during the week for some good entertainment.
Over on Comcast Sports South there is a pretty good show called Talkin' Football. The show focuses on the SEC predominantly, but they also discuss the ACC. Tony Barnheart and Mark Shlabach are the most well known of the hosts, but the other guys aren't too bad. Episodes are bi-weekly with a thursday preview show and a sunday post-game show. The great thing about the sunday show is that it fills in a major gap in college football coverage. I like the NFL alright, but it dominates the airwaves on Sunday and I'm still wanting to hear about Bama kicking ass, all the upsets of the week, discussion of polls, etc. It would be great if the show was on a little earlier sunday, but it's still must-watch TV IMO.
Speaking of the lack of Sunday shows, there is a radio show called In the Trenches with Robert Shultz (former Bama player). It comes on from 4-6, and it used to have that Auburn shill Stan White, but I guess White flew the coop and they have some other goober to co-host. When I've had the chance to hear it, it's been okay. The problem is that I rarely have a radio with me on sunday and I can't find a good stream of it. Oh well!
There's an SEC show on some channel (can't think of it right now) called SEC Gridiron Live with Charles Davis. Davis used to be on the NFL network. He's a pretty good commentator despite being a UT alum. I haven't been watching this show for some reason, but I might start checking it out to see if it's really any good.
And finally I'll give a passing mention to Ivan Maisel's podcast on espn.com's college football page. If you're bored and need something to listen to, it will help pass the time. Well, that's about it for me. Hopefully some people will find something here to help fulfill their appetite for college football discussion that they were missing out on, or maybe someone will let me know about a good show that I'm missing.
FanPosts are just that; posts created by the fans. They are in no way indicative of the opinions of SBN and the authors of Roll Bama Roll.

SEC Gridiron Live
Don’t like it, can’t stand it. One interesting aspect of this show is when they highglight the twitter feed. They claim that coached are currently tweeting while the show is airing plugging the show. Highly unlikely. I don’t care much for it and wouldn’t predict it lasting very long. However, with our appetite for SEC football, it wouldn’t surprise me if the show had some success due to that fact.
I enjoy Talkin Football. I really enjoy Tony Barnhart.
ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!
Davis is pretty good overall
And the babe running the computer doesn’t look bad. My dog knows more about football though.
And the rest of it is pretty clunky. The other guys (Randy Cross and Tim Couch) seem to be VERY basic in their explaining of the game and tend to be wrong more than not. You would think for the SEC they would have a better production for this. IMO.

I agree.
Overall, the show just seems a bit corny.

I’m not sure if it a full-time thing but I heard In the Trenches last Sunday and the “other goober” was Ben Laird.
I like The Opening Drive on WJOX with Jay Barker, Al DelGreco, and Tony Kurre.
the opening drive is god awful in my opinion...
i had to stop listening b/c i found myself beginning to hate jay barker, and that just can’t happen.
It was a woman who drove me to drink and I never got a chance to thank her.
in fact if it wasn't for the roundtable, i wouldn't even listen to JOX

Nashville Radio
Not sure how many folks on here in or around Nashville, but The Morning Sports Page followed by Tim Brando on 560 AM is pretty good. Lots of good SEC talk on the Morning Sports Page, and we all know Brando.
ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!
I'll be honest...
I don’t watch any of them. I don’t have the opportunity to get them now that I’m in Manhattan, but even when I was living in the southeast I never gave any of them the time of day.
Talk radio is generally the killing fields of intellectual discourse. And television is usually even worse, because then you have even less time for meaningful commentary. Everything becomes a 30-second sound byte.

I agree.
But for some reason I can’t seem to turn off talk radio. Especially now that I’ve lived in Nashville for 5 years, hearing all of the ut fans cry and moan all the time. It’s very entertaining stuff.
One particular fond memory of mine, was a caller on the “Vol Calls” segment they do one night a week up here. This was back when Fulmer was coaching. Somehow, a drunk, redneck ut fan (don’t mean to be redundant) got through. The conversation went something like this:
Host: Welcome to Vol calls your on with Phillip Fulmer
Caller: Hey coach!
Fulmer: How are you (insert name)
Host: You got a question for the coach?
Caller: Yessir I do…i was just wonderin what are you plannin to do about us gettin our asses kicked every week?
I almost ran off the road I was laughing so hard. Classic example of why I am addicted to talk radio, even though I know listening to it makes me dumber.

If I'm traveling during the day,
I like the Scott Van Pelt show. He loves talking cfb, and he’s an adimtted SEC homer. The Herd Sucks, Rivals Radio is tolerable, and the RoundTable is entertaining. As for tv, that Experts show irks me when it’s Millen, McShay, Pollack, and Bellotti, but it does provide a lot more depth, and Luginbill and Madich are too bad.

For the most part
all you are gonna get in mass-media today is shite. As stated earlier, the 30-second sound bytes are more comic relief than anything else. It just sucks to have to wait through “expert analysis” for a punch line. I tolerate WJOX for about 20 minutes a day…any more time than that will dull my senses….and don’t get me started on Colon Cowterd..he needs a throttling about the face and neck.

I live in a town between Auburn and Montgomery that is a radio hellhole, so I have to stream audio over the net…that being said, I can not stand Finebaum; maybe it’s because I lived outside the state for over 14 years, but if I want “Bammer vs. Barner” insults, I’ll read the comments after every college football story on AL.com.
My favorite sportstalk show is Matt Chernoff and Chuck Oliver on Atlanta’s 680 The Fan.

i think phoenix has 1 radio host who's actually very good at his job and not a hack in any way
dude’s name is Bob Kemp on 1060 am here in phoenix. he does great job in the summer especially. he’ll spend a whole week on 2 NFL divisions and 2 college conferences and will have great guests on from the various regions to discuss the teams. he does a good job with NBA. and does not play to the sound byte schtick that pretty much every single other show i can think of does. he comes across like an old school newspaper guy who will just as soon call out a stupid point by a guest/player/coach/front office type/or caller as he will praise a guest/coach/player/caller when they say/do somethign worth it. i dont always agree with the dude but his show is the closest thing to calm, reasoned analysis as i have ever found on AM radio.
i listin to the “greatest hits” links saved on finebaums website some times. i’m pretty sure that Tammy person is an act. If not, then she lacks any sense of cognitive self-awareness.
