Marcell Dareus

All excited after a play against MSU, I told someone sitting near me in the stands "Damion Square next year will have the kind of season Dareus was supposed to have this year.  I started thinking about this after the game and I have a question for all the fans here:

Star-divide

Do you think that we might possibly see him return next year?  I know he has been nicked up all year (and lets not talk about that dirty play that caused much of that), but he hasn't had that big year the draft gurus were predicting, he has been a bit slowed and who knows how long before he is full speed after the season it will be before he is (like what will he do at the combine?).  Add in the NFL labor strife and uncertainty.  Is he still projecting high first round? Considering the NFL's current uncertainty and the different contracts between a high first round pick and a second round+ selection, what would he do?  I know he is still a freak and a stud, but does anyone else think this is less pipe dream territory and moving closer to kind of unlikely but maybe?  I have read nothing about his thoughts, nor  have I looked at any early mock drafts, this is all just floating in my head.

I figured I was a bit beyond reasonable.

Er, Mr. Payne. Sir. You know every second that you could let us out early would really increase our chances of survival.

Nothing wrong with a little wishful thinking.

With the Juco prospect we picked up i think we’ll have more success with the ends getting into the backfield and causing more disruption than they did this year. He’s a monster and seems more athletic than cody which i think will cause him to draw a lot of double teams like cody did and consequently leave parts of the opp O line pretty vulnerable.

Kiper has him first round for now - but - Kiper hasn't gotten it right in 20 years.

the mock drafts change during the combine, etc. It’s a shame he is playing nicked up. He is obviously slower because of it, and it is hard to say if he is getting better. Oddly enough, his best game was against USC. It will surprise me to see him come back. A looming rooking salary cap will push a lot of guys in. Saban will help him decide. They actually check with the NFL and see and if does not look like the first round, then he has a decision to make.

I wrote an article about mock drafts after last year’s draft, which was pretty funny to me.

I am greedy.

My guess is that he goes

He probably gets back close to full between the Iron Bowl and a bowl game. Then Bama gets an easier opponent in the bowl than we’ve had in awhile, and he goes nuts against their offensive line.

But I’ve thought more than once during this season that we might get Dareus, Hightower, and Barron back this year. Wouldn’t that be something?

I don't think we can predict how the draft will go this year

this could be the last before a new CBA, the first of the new CBA or there could be no draft at all. This means that there will either be an unheard of high number of underclassmen come out or a unheard of low number. So yes, there is more hope than normal that the Marcells and Julios will come back for one more go around.

There will be a draft

Regardless of the labor negotiations. However, what is important to remember, is that if there is a work stopage, first year players won’t know how long this will go on for, nor will they have any income. I would have to think that for a lot of guys, the thought of not being on scholarship or having any income is a scary thing. I know that agents normally front new players comming into the league with cash, but they may be more reluctant to do this year as they don’t have any certainty as to when they will be paid. I would be surprised if this doesn’t wind up factoring into what some players decide to do.

One of the least talked about subjects is Nick Sabans ties to the NFL.

Saban has ties to more NFL teams than any other college coach I can think of. This really helps Juniors who want to test the waters. The inside scoop allows players to find out if there’s an interest from NFL teams. Recruits with NFL dreams need to keep this bonus in mind when considering a college destination.

Hold my beer and watch this.

Agree.

I worry that Dareus could leave and be drafted but then be cut later.

Projecting Dareus as an early 1st Rounder is a head-scratcher.

We all know he could be a beast, but this has not materialized due to his injury. Double-teaming is something that the best linemen will overcome, so I don’t really consider that argument if he actually is what he is purported to be.

I’ve said in other posts that he needs one more year at Alabama and I still believe this.

Charles Martel, Charlemagne, William the Conqueror, Raymond IV the Count of Toulouse, Godfrey of Bouillon, Baldwin of Boulogne, Henry II, Richard the Lionheart, St. Joan of Arc and Napoleon Bonaparte -- all of good stock.

The question is

whether or not his upside is worth rookie-cap money, plus, that mega-signing bonus. It would be great to have him back, but, unless the NFL locks-out and teams clam up…he’s gone.

I think he needs to show

something special against Auburn to be a 1st rounder. But, all it would take is sacking Cam a few times and he would be gold.

If he has a bad game against Auburn, I think he drops some, to the 2nd round.

However either way I think he and Barron are gone. Hightower, maybe not.

If Cam and Auburn don't go down for this there is no justice and the NCAA needs to apologize to Reggie Bush.

My 2 cents

would have to say I think alot of players my stick around with the uncertainty of the NFL looming. We will have to wait it out.
