Are we missing a blue collar element?
Tough loss today, guys. I just want to throw out an idea I've sort been stewing throughout this season to generate discussion. I'm not trying to call out players or insult the team.
Do any of you think we could be missing a blue collar element on our defense? We've recruited a lot of four and five star guys and I'm happy for it. Many of them are developing and will become good players. But thinking back to 2008 and 2009, we were solid defensively and it wasn't the result of having pure talent all over the field. Guys like Rashad Johnson, Marquis Johnson, Eryk Anders, Corey Reamer, Terrence Cody, Lorenzo Washington, and Javier Arenas were superstar players for us even though they were all under the radar type guys coming out of high school. Is it a coincidence that this year's defense has a lot of talent in terms of recruiting ratings, but it's failing to perform up to Coach Saban's standard?
Those aforementioned guys excelled as a result of Saban's coaching. They bought in to his philsophy and they worked their butts off. When we recruited big time prospects these players held their ground and won starting positions even though most people didn't expect it. They played each week like they had something to prove and it really helped the team.
Again, I don't want to call anyone out on the current team, but is it possible that we are really missing a few of the blue collar, chip on the shoulder guys on defense? I like four and five star recruits, but I think they mix in better with a few overachievers (as we saw in 2008 and 2009).
What do you guys think?

One thing I want to add
is the idea that attitude is such a big part of defense. Teams struggle to have the perfect combination of talent and attitude. I’m wondering if we’re missing some attitude type players?
Rolando had the perfect combination of attitude and talent. So did Demeco.
"Open your mouth again and I'll nail it shut." Henriques, COMMANDO (1985).
I think they were living on hype and a sense of entitlement
Think about the lead up to the season, the over exposure and everything that comes with that. These are kids who hadn’t (and still haven’t) proven anything.
They lack experience, toughness and the ability to execute under pressure. Some of this was coaching (McElwain’s getting pretty predictable) but most of it was on the players.
I had them losing three games due to so many new bodies out there on defense. Saban’s defense takes two years before you start to click. We played confused in many situations, causing us to be a step slow. If your second guessing coverages, roles, etc. you play slower.
We really miss Rolando and somebody has to step up.
Now we go back to work and hope to play spoiler, though odds are VERY long.
Two more...
…vital qualities those guys had are intelligence and experience. I don’t know enough about this year’s D to comment on the former, but there’s no getting past the youth we put on the field. Some of the attitude you mention may come with more seasoning.

Agree.
We also lacked WANT. You have to go through some adversity, losses and stuff that hurts so bad, you never want to experience it again. That want or will to overcome adversity comes from the bad experiences, the mistakes that make you work harder.
Bottom line is we have some kids who need to learn, grow and gain from the experiences they are having this year to sharpen that desire and will to learn more for next year.
Just checked...
Four senior starters. GMAC, Carpenter, Dial, I forget the other.
Juniors in play for the draft – Dareus, Barron, Julio (I think Hightower stays)
Yeah, Ingram’s gone after this season.

Marquis Johnson had to develop
Not many players start out stars. Most certainly Cory Reamer did not. And Cody had some JC development first. Honestly, I see our young guys coming along pretty well. They are not perfect but they are playing above their experience. Cody, Javy, Ro, Mike Johnson, were playing at their experience level which was quite high. Marquis Johnson got beat several times in 2008 and in 09 it was like, “I’m not getting beat like that again”.
Julio Rules
Bama's Pluck and Grit have Writ Her Name in Crimson Flame
I certainly agree with this.
It’s just my observation, but this has been personified for me at times this year when Kirkpatrick makes any decent play and proceeds to celebrate. It always makes me think of that scene from The Untouchables when Capone (DeNiro) is walking around the table with the baseball bat giving the speech about team players.
“I get nowhere unless the team wins.”
Elements we're missing
Consistent line play on both sides of the ball, discipline and focus in the defensive backfield, a downfield passing game. If slapping blue collars on some guys will fix that, then I’m all for it.
You can't slap it on them
it comes from where they came from.
As much as I hate Auburn I hate Tenn. that much more.
Agree totally.
Coach Bryant’s philosophy was always that although we had a lot of pure talent like Namath and Stabler, he was able to build a real team by taking guys that were not superstars and get them to give more than they thought they could.
As I look at this team I think who are those guys? Who are the Rasaad Johnsons, the Marquis Johnsons, the Mike Johnsons, the Terrance Codys?
I see Dial as one of those guys, but after him whom do we have that you think…there goes an overachiever? Maybe Lowery?
I certainly would not say that about any of the guys on either line right now
As much as I hate Auburn I hate Tenn. that much more.
Yes, we are missing the blue collar element.
Some 4-5star players forget that you have to keep earning the right to wear that jersey. A lot of this comes from your raising. Athletes like Julio and Mark keed fighting to be the best. Yes they have the talent but it is their work ethic that makes them stellar. On the other hand, you have mike vicks, where their talent oulls them through but they never meet the level of greatness. In addition, their self entitlement causes them to make very poor life choices.

Disagree on the "Blue Collar Element"
Just because the sycophantic lap-dogs at ESPN call a kid a “4-Star” recruit or the “next (insert legendary football player’s name here),” doesn’t necessarily make it so.
There are plenty of players who aren’t worth their weight in “hype.” Not to say that our players suck, but our main downfall this year has been the defense. Considering the growing pains that the ’93 team endured — on the heels of what the great ’92 defense accomplished — 7-2 is pretty fantastic IMHO. The 2009 defense had far too many vets and leaders for there NOT to be a serious fall-off when they all graduated/got drafted.
It isn’t that our players “feel entitled” to victories or read too many of their press clippings. The problem is in having a heavily inexperienced group. Our “Blue Collar” guys are in there, but expecting even half the contribution of people like Arenas, Cody, Anders, etc, is unrealistic since those were a special group.
Charles Martel, Charlemagne, William the Conqueror, Raymond IV the Count of Toulouse, Godfrey of Bouillon, Baldwin of Boulogne, Henry II, Richard the Lionheart, St. Joan of Arc and Napoleon Bonaparte -- all of good stock.
I can honestly say that allowing those guys to play together for 2-3yrs helped them
to mature to a great team. We aint even close, but the future is exciting. If you have ever had the chance to start in high school as a freshman in ANYTHING, you know the learning curve is steep. Now imagine the player you were as a Senior, and what you knew vs what you knew as a true freshman wasnt even close. Now apply that to college. You will never hear the phrase “That CB’s best year was his Freshman year, but he sure has regressed in Sabans system” . Nope you wont hear that, because most of these guys will be gone to the NFL after their JR year. Once teams fear our passing game next year, our running game will take right back off since we will have a balanced attack once more and teams will think twice about loading the box. They didnt fear us this year because they had no reason too. We will get better players, they will learn and soon we can actually “reload” than replace…..I’m more excited for next year than this past year because I knew we had some challenges. I just hate Julio will be gone because we will miss his “threat” downfield and his blocking ability, because if you rewatch games where Mark and Trent got off, Julio was systematically toting CB’s down field on skates.
I am a parody of myself.
