"It had everything to do with Turner leaving," Otis Yelverton, Maynard's high school coach in Greensboro, N.C., and a close family friend, said by telephone Thursday night. "Here's the deal. I'm not trying to throw anybody under the bus but I guess I am going to throw him under the bus. You got a starting quarterback who doesn't talk to the new coaching staff until (this past) Friday. We got a problem with that. ... You got a coaching staff that comes and acts like they really didn't want him there."
Buffalo News: QB Maynard opts to leave UB
That quote comes from one of Keenan Allen's high school coaches, who is interjecting himself here and who is allegedly the handler in the whole Allen / Maynard melodrama. And now we get word that Allen refused to take phone calls from the Alabama coaching staff prior to this weekend, and apparently his Father called Saban last night saying they had gone in a different direction. And now it seems like Allen and his entire family will uproot and move across country on a whim, or the two brothers will end up signing with a school they have never even visited before. It's all odd, to put it mildly.
I'll be frank... I'm certainly not one to bash recruits, and I won't do that here. However, truth be told, if even half of the things going around about Allen and family are even remotely true, then not only should we not be not be bemoaning that we "lost" Allen, we ought to look at this as an outright blessing and get as far away from this thing as we can. Never forget, it is not the players you don't sign that come back to haunt you, it is the players that you do. We ought to all feel damn relieved that this happened as it did.
Addendum: Also, keep in mind the timing of the events as they unfolded. We had an in-home visit with Allen mid-week, but then he refused to take our phone calls on Friday before the visit to Cal. The following day, Menzie committed to Kirby Smart over dinner. You reconstruct the timetable. The staff moved on from Allen when he wouldn't return their calls, and immediately picked up Menzie to take his spot.

dead-on OTS
we should be thrilled that this kid apparently is looking elsewhere. Upon further review and as the evidence mounts, it does not appear that KA is the type of player that would have meshed with the “process”.
Or better put...
… it does not appear that Allen is the type of player that would have meshed with the fact that we are on probation and thus we need to be taking no risks whatsoever.

I love...
recruiting and hate it at the same time, just because of things like this. I mean, The whole Pryor deal, holding out, and what not is another example. This one is in a league of it’s own. I just keep telling myself these are 17-18 yr old kids that haven’t matured yet. Good luck to the kid in whatever he does. We’ll get who the coaching staff needs.
" I should keep my words soft and sweet in case I have to eat them."
By all accounts...
From everything I have read about this kid, he (KA) has always wanted to play at Alabama, for Coach Saban. The fact that this handler is all but admitting that he and the family are using KA to get the half-brother to a different school obviously puts Alabama in the position to GTFO. Immediately.
I actually feel bad for KA. I think he wants to come here. I also think we should stop bashing him because it is very likely that he isn’t being allowed to make his own choice.
I hope it work out for Allen in Cali....
because the cost-of-living differential is H U G E !!!!

Good evaluation
of this situation. From the time Allen started talking about going somewhere else my feeling was “let him go.” I still don’t think he is a Tebow, a program changing player, just a very good athlete. Who knows what position he will play? And, with this family thing there are going to be problems.
I think it would great if he went to PSU and then we could introduce him to Alabama football next fall.
I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.
"don't think he is....a program changing player"
KA is listed as the Nations #5 ATH by ESPN/Scouts Inc. Bama got the nations #1 ATH in 2008. BJ Scott. Maybe BJ will make an impact in 2010 but so far nothing from him. I think Allen would have mirrored Scotts success. IMO

Hey Keenan I saw a recent picture of you the other day. Haqve you looked at the Oklahoma program yet? You would fit in great ther with that feeble attempt at facial hair……..just kidding. Best Wishes young’un

My problem
If even half of the things going around about Allen and family are even remotely true, then not only should we not be not be bemoaning that we “lost” Allen
My only problem with this, is this always seems to be the modus operandi of fans whenever a player commits to another school. I read a lot of the rumors that everyone else is speculating about, and I agree that staying off probation should clearly be Alabama’s number one priority. All that being said, the coaches at Alabama have still been pursuing Allen, and they clearly wanted him to be a part of this recruiting class. There was no one around the Alabama program three weeks ago, who had an unkind word about Allen.
This.
He`s 18 years old, apt to change his mind frequently.
Also, California women > Alabama women.
Hormones can be a bitch.
All your recruit are belong to Cal.

Otis Yelverton
is acting as an agent. The ncaa has to do something with so-called “handlers.” They’re more appropriately called auctioneers.
Roll Tide! Beat the Horns! Bring home that crystal!!!
We are hearing things similar to this, that Yelverton is a handler
a la Bryce Brown, and that there may be a job waiting for Otis at Cal.
Gabe King, a former Northern Guilford player, just switched his commitment

Anyone been to Haight and Asbury?
I was there in October…got hit up for money about every 10 steps…. Tried to walk in Golden Gate park….couldnt…hippies everywhere. Wouldnt have been so bad if they wouldnt ask for money every 2.5 seconds…. It was like being in a strip club except without naked women, music, or drinks…or a pole or stage….
Don`t tell me you`re actually trying to compare San Francisco to Tuscaloosa…

FWIW
We do not know the whole story. This just may be a case of a kid caring too much about his family. From what I have heard, KA’s half-brother was a BG/TC(bad grades/team cancer) and Buffalo was happy to see him go. KA may just be trying to “save” his 1/2 brother. If it indeed was a “package” deal, then I am glad he is going elsewhere but let’s not judge the kid on his motives. We can only speculate.
Auburn and Tennessee fans are a lot like Slinkys...neither are worth much but you do get a sense of satisfaction from pushing them down a flight of stairs
