The 49er fans don't deserve Glen Coffee

There has been a lot of this kind of talk over at sites like Niner's Nation during the past year...

As for Coffee, he was abysmally abysmal, which, of course, is the inverse of "tremendously tremendous" (hat-tip:Fooch). Just to make sure you put the stats in their proper perspective, Coffee's DYAR-per-carry of -1.02 means that, if Coffee was the 49ers' starter, and they had to replace him for whatever reason, an average backup would gain 1.02 more yards per carry than he did. However, being that Coffee is, in fact, a backup, his negative DYAR/R really just means that the Niners might want to find a new backup.

Perhaps these guys should give a gander to this article in the Sacramento Bee...

Here's an interesting breakdown from the guys at Football Outsiders that mathematically shows what every 49ers fan strongly suspected about the 2009 team: The offensive line wasn't very good. In fact, FO ranks the 49ers dead last in a category it calls adjusted line yards (running plays).

Even worse, the information suggests that it was a painfully predictable running strategy that set the ground game up to fail. But, obviously, the fan's pick out a rookie running back as the culprit.

hate that...i really want all our guys to be wildly successful at the next level

i saw Glen for the 1st time since he left for cali at the BCSNCG and talked to him for a while trying to get a feel for where his head is at with the 49ers & the NFL in general. i was unsuccessful. i couldn’t decide if he was being truly ‘humble’ and shy or if he just thought i was some dumbass mom who couldn’t possibly know anything about football. there certainly was no excitement in his voice or a get-at-it attitude. it left me a bit sad and made me wish he had more tutelage from our dark lord & co.

We know Glen's got talent.

We saw it in action all through 2008. With a decent line, he’d be doing tons better.

With that said, even with an abysmal O line, -1.02 yards per carry is pretty low. Can you give a non-NFLer some perspective on exactly how they use him? If they’re just sticking him in a couple of times a game to give the starter a breather, that’s one thing, but if they’re using him much more than that, he may have some issues. I’d just like a little more info.

I’m with LIttleSis – I want Bama guys to be wildly successful in the NFL, and it always bothers me when some of the guys – especially our more talented ones – struggle there.

What happened?

He had such an amazing preseason that I really thought he’d have a solid year. I still believe that he has what it takes to be a solid contributor in the NFL.

The NFL is no joke

There’s no shame in what Glenn has done. Not every player can be an All-Pro player. The average career is probably less than a year when you count all the guys who get injured or cut.

Coffee is an undersized workhouse back. He doesn’t have great speed or physical tools by NFL standards. He has achieved a lot already and I think he’ll probably be better in his second year. If he isn’t, he’ll be released.

Totally true, it also says something about how good the 08 line was. Of course his career isn’t over, and if he doesn’t really improve we can hope he still might end up on a team that would fit him better, the Colts or Chargers come to mind, some team short on good RBs that might make better use of backs his size.

by Alabama ManDance on Feb 26, 2010 1:14 PM CST up reply actions

Glen averaged 2.7

yards per carry over the season but only had 80 something carries so that breaks down to less than 5 carries per game. He did have a few games where he did considerably better than 2.7.

But the starter, Gore had 4.9 average, with about 3 times the carries so obviously Coffee, bad line and all, was not so good in 2009.

However I predict he wil make the squad this year and do better in 2010. If you remember it was not until his 3rd year at Bama that Coffee looked really good. I think the same thing will happen in the NFL.

But if not, well he made the decision to cash in when he did. Hopefully he is banking his money.

I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.

I didn’t understand his decision at the time, but now it looks like a good one. The guy is barely over 200 pounds and he has a slightly ectomorphic body type. He made it a lot farther than a lot of people thought he’d make it.

Ultimately I think he made the right decision...

….he’d have been splitting time with Ingram and Upchurch (and likely losing his starting job to Ingram), plus Trent Richardson was coming in and we were losing three guys off the o-line. Get that paper while you can and all….

true 5026

that he busted it in his 3rd year at Bama. what was interesting about all that to me was that he CLAIMED it the summer before it happened. he had interviews in all the hometown newspapers where he projected he would have a great year, it was going to be something special and BOOM – hello SI cover after the Clemson game. i was hoping to hear that same fire and attitude at this level but then again, he may just need a bit more time. here’s to hoping he gets it!

I’m pretty sure it was Mark Ingram on that Sports illustrated cover, but I could be wrong.

Looking at the right side of the helmet...

I am rather sure it’s the front side of a “3” and not a “2”. That would tend to slant Coffee being his number is 38, if I recall correctly.

some factors not being looked at.

When you get more carries, you are more likely to break the bigger runs. If you removed the larger runs from the stats, you would see a rather large drop in YPC among the RB’s. A good 50 yard run will do a good bit to raise your YPC. Run one of those, then back it up with 9 straight runs of 0 yds and you still end up with a 5 yards per carry average over those plays.

Which play is going to end up being that big break away is anyone’s guess. But the back with the most carries is likely going to be the one that gets it. Those times when someone misses something, or you get some good blocks etc.

Also there is rhythm from playing time. You play with the guys better, and you can better know what to except from your line and who is going to win the battles more likely to follow. If you rarely get the ball, all you can do is run the play and take what is given. Can’t really settle in and get comfortable or whatever.

And as a backup, it not only means he is coming in to give the starter rest, but he is also going to be the one who comes in on plays where a real gain isn’t really being expected.

Basically, as a backup you do not get the choice plays the starter does. The only time you see “backups” with decent stats is when you have a RB by committee and the carries are more even.

In order to have a negative YPC, it means he is getting hit in the backfield a good bit. That is OL, or a D that doesn’t respect the passing game – which is not uncommon in San Fran with Alex Smith at QB. Only time the niners opened up the passing game really was against opponents that had the worse passing defenses.

Plus, in general it is not surprising to me that Gore would do better overall with a struggling line. Gore is a big guy. He reminds me of Shawn Alexander.

I have discovered while interacting with other Kansas City Chiefs fans

That are not also huge fans of college football, that NFL fans seem to be obsessed with statistics and numbers in general.

Show them a spreadsheet of something and it’s gospel. Show them combine numbers and they become visibly aroused.

So true

I think NFL fans are still waiting for their Moneyball/Sabermetrics moment. Unfortunately, I don’t think most of them realize that football doesn’t lend itself to that sort of analysis.

I'm wrong all the time.

by PeteHoliday on Feb 25, 2010 9:52 AM CST up reply actions

NFL stats are a little bit more relevant, since the league isn’t 120 teams with such a huge talent disparity (Detroit Lions jokes aside, and I’d compare them more to a Vandy than a North Texas). Fantasy football also has had a huge effect. Of course playcalling and the statless offensive lines are such a huge X-factor that the numbers don’t tell the whole tale.

by Alabama ManDance on Feb 26, 2010 1:05 PM CST up reply actions

A bit, yes, but they’re nowhere near the level MLB stats, and if you read NFL bloggers it’s almost like they don’t even bother watching the games and just pick up the stat sheets afterward. Can’t stand it.

I'm wrong all the time.
