A source at a school involved with Allen's recruitment said coaches heard that Yelverton had been offered a job at Cal for steering the player ranked No. 5 overall in the nation, and that Allen's parents would be moving to California to stay close to their son.
Before Allen announced his decision, his mother, Dorie Lang, was asked whether the family will move to the West Coast.
"I don't know that yet," she said.
Beyond that, Team Allen would say little to The Tuscaloosa News. Angered that Lang had been asked about a possible move, Yelverton complained to the manager of the bar and grill and the News' correspondent was asked to leave before signing ceremony began.
Outside Coyote's Dueling Piano Bar, Allen's father declined to answer questions.
Tuscaloosa News: Allen's decision is family based
The more we learn, the more heavily I breathe a sigh of relief. We may have lost an incredibly talented player, but we dodged a massive bullet in the process. Sometimes the ends just don't justify the means, and it certainly is refreshing to see that we have a man in charge who realizes that. Lord knows that has not always been the case.

KA
It’s to bad this kid gotta suffer the consequences of the greed of his parents, we know his parents can’t aford to live in California, he’ll they couldn’t aford to live in Alabama so you know who’s footing the “BILL” so looked for some Recruting violations from Cal somewhere in the near future. I just feel sorry for KA, cause he really wanted to run with the Tide.

Come se dice
Eric Locke?
MATRIX: Bennett, I thought you were--
BENNETT: Dead? You thought wrong. Ever since you had me thrown out of the unit, I've been waiting to pay you back. Do you know what today is, Matrix? Payday.
How in the hell
is Yelverton going to take a job with Cal without having the NCAA all over them? Is Cal really that dumb?
do you not remember...
… Malzahn at Arky?? Admittedly, he at least had a (somewhat) qualified resume.

if gus wasn't qualified when he got that job
his two years at Tulsa sure proved a point.

The hiring may not be an NCAA violation
but they are going to be staked out in the bushes just waiting for this kid and his family to screw up. At least that’s how I’d like to think the NCAA operates

Nothing is going to come of this...
Seriously, if the NCAA won’t can’t eviscerate USC, what makes you think they’re going to touch the bay area?

But ditto Bamagrad and Locke...
this is a nightmare that we do not need, no matter the talent, it simply isn’t worth the NCAA on us like a dog to its own vomit.

Is it an NCAA penalty
if coach “steers” a kid and then the coach gets a job? I mean I know it is a penalty if a school gives a coach money, but in the case of a job you could argue that he was given the job based on merit.
There have been examples through the years of coaches doing this and nothing happening. It was long time ago, but I remember that LSU got Pistol Pete and his dad Press at the same time. I don’t think Press lasted long after Pete left.
I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.
Is this what
John Calipari does? I thought John Wall’s coach and/or Dad was awarded a position on the UK staff. I may have completely just made that up but I thought I read that some where – and I believe everything I read on the internets!
wow,
I feel like we really dodged a bullet on this one.
Cal’s a good program in a beautiful place but I have to think the NCAA investigators started asking questions as soon as Cal. emerged as a candidate.

just to make sure we are clear here...
this kid was asking to have the school find an extra scholly for his half brother and a coaching slot for his HS coach?
yeah, we made the right call here, no question.

Actually...
… not only did Allen bring his half-brother with him to Cal, he also brought with him two more players. In effect, it was a 5-for-1 deal.

insane
and i’d like to point out that for as bad a rep coach saban has with the media, i cannot think of a single instance a reporter has ever been excluded from a press conference with him. he may be harsh, but the main is fair.

Cal fans are saying its all legit and his brother will seriously push for playing time
which he may do, however, it reeks of shadiness and desperation on the part of Cal. This may have been different back in the day before scholarship limitations, but these damn things are too valuable for an elite team to throw away.

There's the trick...
these damn things are too valuable for an elite team to throw away.
They’re entirely too valuable for a program like us to throw away, but a program like Cal that hasn’t won their own conference in 50+ years? Well, what the hell do they have to lose? So what if it blows up in their face? That is the end result for them anyway.

Welll, they are elite
for the Left Coast…10-2, buys you ESPN hype and an inevitable beatdown by the B12…And, that’s in Cal’s GOOD years.
