Recruiting and Committment?
As a lifelong Bama fan currently living in Cullman I was excited when I read that Spencer Region was announcing his choice of schools today. I am an avid college football fan who reads all the blogs, not only Bama sites but all the SB Nation blogs. I am recovering from a serious accident almost a year ago and have way too much time on my hands so living less than five minutes away from the site of his announcement I decided to attend. I had communicated with OTS who told me to get some pictures to post on RBR, which I was excited to do.
I found myself between the members of the press and some members of his family when the decision was revealed. There was what I can only describe as polite applause, but there was such a strange, weird feel about the whole thing. Everyone seemed to be confused, thinking the punch line was coming. I too have read all the things about a lifelong dream to play for the Tide, and all the other things. I have seen him around town wearing Bama t-shirts. Are "lifelong dreams" thrown away so quickly? I heard a member of the press say as late as Friday he had told him he was a Bama lock.
I waited several hours before writing this trying to find some objectivity. I still feel the way I did when I left there, there is something wrong with this picture, for me it doesn't pass the "smell test"
FanPosts are just that; posts created by the fans. They are in no way indicative of the opinions of SBN and the authors of Roll Bama Roll.

Just watched some of the press conference on YouTube
And it definitely had a strange vibe to it (link here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrEddg_xIao&feature=player_embedded). Can’t imagine what it was like to be there! This is all so strange … lots of rumors out there – I would love to know what actually happened …
"they love me and I love them"
That kid just needed a hug. I never thought an o-lineman could come off as a prima-donna, but that was one strange press conference.
video
thank you Crimsonchick for the link, I am glad to know that I will be sure to watch it, Maybe it won’t be as bizzare as being there seemed to be.
I was born and raised in Cullman
and I too was excited about this kid signing with Alabama. When my Mom called me this morning and told me he decided to go to the barn, I was floored. After watching that video that CrimsonChick posted, it is just weird. What he said is so rehearsed. I am betting that this kid and his family have been hearing so many people sing this kid’s praises that they started to believe it and maybe got a little too big for their britches!
He was being compared to Wesley Britt….no way, Wesley has way more class than that!!

It really is
the University of Auburn. They control a city, Alabama controls a state.
Cheerleaders didn’t seem that happy did they? Kid messed up big time.
I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.
he ended a sentence with war eagle
it is OVER – hes really crossed the line now…

Think you can send those pictures our way?
Has anyone read up on the story as why he changed? the more i read about it the more it seems like negative press for Alabama.
AUBURN is back!
Ummm ...
Last time I checked we WON the Iron Bowl. I don’t know what goes on down there in Auburn, but in Tuscaloosa, “almost” doesn’t count. But hey, if that’s all you’ve got … I agree with Todd, that’s pretty darn cute.

Here's a picture for you.
Forget about negative press when you have one of these

Call us when you get one, Barnie Rubble…

Dude.
If Chizik coached you guys for 20 years you wouldn’t have one of these. Tubs was the best coach you ever had and he couldn’t bring you one of these. But hey, everybody loves everybody at the University of Auburn.
I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I’d comment further on this, umm, shall we say OPTIMISTIC prediction but I am too busy ROTFL …. please do come back next January …. I can’t wait for the follow-up discussion …

AUBURN is back!
What are you doing here, don't you know it's time to plant raddishes and lettuce right now?
Your Alabama jealousy is noted thanks for standing up and being counted!

After watching Region's speech...
…I kept thinking it sounded familiar. Then it came to me!
This: “It’s like family down there. They love me. I love them.”
Clearly, he’s recently been watching Barney. He is a youngster after all and he just shit his pants with this move.
You had me at "ROLL TIDE"!!!

After watching the video
I really feel sorry for this kid. His feelings were so obviously hurt. It’s kinda sad. The whole, “They love me, and I love them” line is just too much. It’s a trainwreck.

I live in Cullman County. Several times I've seen Spencer Region play. He's a big body, but, in all honesty I couldn't figure out what Coach Saban saw in this kid
Yes he’s big, but he’s slow with his feet and his hands. When Cullman played West Point, West Point was able to speed rush around this kid all night. Same thing when the y played Russelville. His arms are short for a lineman. A simple spin or a swim move beat him every time. After I heard of his interest in Bama I thought maybe he has something I’m not seeing. Maybe he just needs some coaching.

In 2011 Bama’s recruiting class will be small. We have a mere handful of Seniors leaving and only a few Juniors making the jump. The numbers say we’ll have around 16-18 signees. Comming off a BCS Title Bama should be able to fill each spot with a 4 or 5-Star talent. We are the National Champs. All the great recruits are going to want to play for Bama. With that being said and known I couldn’t belive Bama would waste a scholly on Region, a recruit ranked as a 2-star with a number ranking of 45 by ESPNU (the most accurate of recruiting services) Region is not a big time recruit. Like I said earlier, he’s just too slow with short arms and a tendancy to let smaller faster DL’s get around him and sack the QB or disrupt ball carriers.

After he switched at the last moment and gave his verbal to Auburn. My first thought was shewww! I was truley relieved. With his skill set I really couldn’t imagine him ever playing for Alabama. Coach Saban didn’t give Spencer a firm offer. Region was dead set on commiting some where. Saban wanting to see this kid play another year. Bama wanted to further evaluate his agility. Spencer got his feelings hurt and took Chiziks offer. Like I said, the kid showed himself to be impatient, a self gratification now type. With his lack of patience, quickness and arm length he in no way is a Bama type player. In 2011 Nick is going for elite players and Region is not elite by a long shot. A great Auburn fit.
He is great who can do what he wishes; he is wise who wishes to do what he can.
The only part of this mysterious event that bothers me is...
he commited to the barn. Like I said I’m truley relieved Bama didn’t waste a scholly on him, but, his switch gives little brother cannon fodder. That part I can’t stand.

My minds eye is telling me that Region will waffle on his pledge. Probably ending up at Vandy or North Texas or even Ole Miss. Fact is he’s a Troy type player who committed way to early in the process in an attempt to gain some of the national signing day attention. For some kids, patience is just a two syllable word.
He is great who can do what he wishes; he is wise who wishes to do what he can.
maybe he was afraid to wait, because he may lose
his offers from D1 schools after his senior year?
…just a thought.
committed?
After thinking about this a couple of days my thoughts on this are: I was already in Cummings when he got there and walked by me talking on his phone, he was clearly upset. He went in the back and was outside on the phone, having to delay his announcement until he finished. From his voice and his actions I don’t think there had been a firm offer from Bama, and just because Nick came to visit didn’t mean there was going to be one. The coach isn’t allowed to mention a recruits name or discuss one specifically until after signing day almost a year away. to do so is a violation of NCAA rules. So HIS story of an offer can not be confirmed or denied by Alabama. I am a lifelong Bama fan and would have committed to them without an offer myself if they would take such a thing. He was clearly upset that something wasn’t going his way, perhaps the statement about the barn wanting him also says who didn’t want him. The on again off again of his announcement should also be telling us something about what was going on in this kids mind.
I heard
Saban was interested in this kid. He wanted to evaluate him during his senior year. There was an interest but as of Saturday there wasn’t a firm offer from Bama. I think something about the process confused the kid, then he merely committed to the barn because of his insecurity in his game and to spite Saban and Bama. IMHO
He is great who can do what he wishes; he is wise who wishes to do what he can.
Oh wait your a 3 star right?

“Yuck, Yuck, they love me and I love them…”
A Doctor goes into a hospital ward to see a pregnant lady, who has had terrible stomach cramps and fears for the unborn child…
“Well, my dear, there’s good news and bad news. We’ve run some tests and the bad news is that your baby has ginger hair.”
“Oh no!” she replies. “What’s the good news?”
The Doctor replies, “It’s dead.”
I rewatched the video...
and I am starting to suspect his ginger status. Perhaps it the sh!ty computer screen or maybe the its the hootch i’ve been drinking. I am sticking to it. The dewd is a damn 3 star ginger!
Its a win- win for everyone...
….if this kid dominates his senior year…we can bring him back….if he sucks it up…then he can stay with Auburn…. lol.
