Pulling up old articles

I was looking for info on starting QB's in the sec for 2010, and I happened to come across this gem of an article from Chris Low, where he answers a few questions regarding the SEC west in 2008

http://espn.go.com/blog/sec/post/_/id/18/lee-gets-first-shot-at-lsu-quarterback-job

Star-divide

Is there a more underrated head coach in the country than Auburn's Tommy Tuberville?

I can't think of one, not when you look at Tuberville's record against top 10 teams, his record on the road and the fact that he's beaten rival Alabama six straight times. He's done it with different coordinators and done it at a time when the SEC has been as balanced as it's ever been. Tuberville's strength as a coach comes in his ability to adapt. He's not afraid to make changes. Just ask the litany of coordinators and coaches he's gone through.

Then comes the part that made me laugh

There is one blotch on his resume. As good as Tuberville has been, he's only been to the SEC championship game twice in nine years. This may be his best chance yet to get back there given LSU's quarterback questions and with the Bengal Tigers having to come to Auburn this season.

lol.  WRONG!

What version of Alabama will we see this season -- the team that inexplicably lost to Louisiana-Monroe and collapsed at the end of the season or the team that blasted Tennessee and had LSU on the ropes in the second half?

We'll have a pretty good idea what kind of season Alabama is going to have by the time the calendar flips to October. Then again, last season it would have been fool's gold. The Crimson Tide unraveled in the last month of the season. This season, Alabama opens against Clemson in Atlanta on Aug. 30 and has trips to Arkansas and Georgia the last two weekends in September. If the Tide can win two of those three games, an eight- or nine-win season is a real possibility. If they lose two or more, they might have trouble winning seven. Anybody who's spent any time around Nick Saban knows what a stickler he is for consistency. The thing that galled him as much as anything last season was the way Alabama played up and down to its level of competition. Look for the Tide to be a more mature team this season, meaning the peaks and valleys won't be quite as pronounced.

hm

Predicting exact W-L records can be a tricky business so I can understand him being so wrong on that. The thing that really gets me is this:

Tuberville’s strength as a coach comes in his ability to adapt. He’s not afraid to make changes. Just ask the litany of coordinators and coaches he’s gone through.

Basically Tubberville’s biggest flaw (IMHO), the one that eventually led to him getting canned, and Chris Low is acting like it’s a great thing that he kept playing musical chairs with his staff.

Obviously

Alabama’s quick rise in 08 and the perfect season in 09 caught almost every one of the experts off guard. Which means that what will happen in 10 and then in 11 is anyone’s guess.

Personally I think that if Tuberville may have been under rated, Auburn’s present staff is getting to be over rated. They managed to win TWO of their last 7 regular season games beating- Ole Miss & La Tech while losing 5 games. For that they were rewarded with the chance to barely beat an average at best Northwestern team in what is usually a pretty good bowl.

But they have ridden the “We almost beat Bama” mantra into a great PR off season and a highly rated recruiting class (which was rated high due to the numbers.)

They have a favorable schedule next year as far as road games except for Tuscaloosa. They also have a favorable “east” draw, missing UF & UT. Still, I predict Auburn at 7-5 next year losing to MSU, SC, Ole Miss, UGA, and Bama. And that gives them credit for beating the Tigers on their schedule- Clemson & LSU, no automatic wins by any means.

If they go 7-5 their great staff will be revealed for what they are…smoke and mirrors. If they make it to 10-2, which they are predicting, I’ll be shocked.

I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.

this reminds me of something the penn state blog came up with in their bow predictions. It went like

Cotton, Oklahoma St. vs. Ole Miss-The Rebels’ win in this game last year propelled them to one of the best off seasons in college football history. They were ranked No. 6, and their quarterback was picked by Steve Spurn-ier as the preseason SEC player of the year. With a win, who knows what the offseason holds for the Rebels this year?

I'm real happy for you Alabama

with your championship, and I’m gonna let you finish.

But Ole Miss had one of the best off-seasons of all time. Of ALL TIME.

Agreed.

Last year Ole Miss had a great off season.
