Speed scores for Bama Backs
ed. by Todd - bumped from the fanposts.
I read an article about the speed scores for the current crop of players at the combine here. For those who aren't familiar with the way it works, the nerds at FO (and I mean that as a compliment) determined that if you combine a RB's speed in the 40 and his size, you can get a better picture of his future success in the NFL. The formula is (Weight (lbs) X 200 / 40 yd dash time ^4) Anything 100 or better is good. 110 or more is great. The average 1st round draft pick is about 112.
For lack of anything better to do, I decided to calculate the speed scores for our 2 main back, Ingram and Richardson. Keep in mind that 1) the 40 times are from Rivals recruiting, which means they are probably total BS, and 2) their growth in college means they probably don't run the same time, even if they really did then. Their sizes are from the Bama homepage, which also probably means they aren't any good.
Anyway, here's the pertinent info:
Ingram - 215 lbs - 40 yd time - 4.4 = speed score = 114
Richardson - 220 lbs - 40 yd time - 4.5 = speed score = 107
Of course, anyone with eyes will tell you Richardson is way faster than Ingram, but that's what Rivals said, so it must be true!!!
By the way, Cody 365 lbs, 40 yard time = 5.5 speed score = 79 - his chances of being drafted as a RB are slim. Which, I suppose, is progress....

even though i know its true....
its hard to believe that Richardson is actually heavier than Ingram.
Lane Kiffin took the meaning of "Volunteer" WAY too seriously....

He may opt....
simply to juke you out of your shoes, while your ankles shatter in the process.

Doubt it...

I generally don't trust Rivals 40 times.
It seems like every 4 star on rivals runs a 4.4 but only 6 backs at the combine recorded 4.4 times. If only 6 of the top NFL running back prospects are that fast, then 4.4 times are obviously less common than we’re led to believe.
If I had to guess I’d say Ingram runs a 4.5 time. Richardson may have legit 4.4 speed given his stellar high school track times (10.5 secs in the 100 meters).
Richardson's 4.5 is legit.
Ingram is probably 4.55.
I mean come on, neither looks like McCluster or Harvin to me.
But 4.5 or 4.55 is plenty fast enough to beat most DB’s to the end zone if you have a step lead. Most of the 40 times out of high school are bogus.
I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.
CB John Fulton has a 40-time of 4.39
He is great who can do what he wishes; he is wise who wishes to do what he can.
Ingram...
…ran a 10.69 100 meter in high school. He was a good bit lighter at the point as well; to put that in perspecitive, Jacoby Ford who just ran a timed 4.28 in the 40, ran 10.01 100 meter in college. I agree with everyone else that it seems unlikely that at Ingram’s size he could run less than a 4.5 in the 40. Chris Johnson who ran the fastest 40 ever at the combine had a score of 121.9.
The $42 Million signing bonus Ingram will recieve next year
Auburn and Tennessee fans are a lot like Slinkys...neither are worth much but you do get a sense of satisfaction from pushing them down a flight of stairs
I think their weights are bogus too
They look 225- 230lbs to me. Ingram being listed at 215 makes me laugh.
But he is only 5 foot 3...
…and girls cannot resist his stare….

BTW, recently Cody weighed in at 354 pounds at the combine.
That’s down from the 370 a few months ago.
