SEC Basketball Tournament: Day Three Open Thread
The Tide is out, but there's still more hot SEC Basketball action to be had, starting with Kentucky vs Tennessee (Go 'Cats) at Noon and followed by Mississippi State vs Vandy at 2:15(ish). If State can take out Vandy that should get them in the NCAA Tournament and give the Tide a better shot at the NIT, so pinch your nose and root for the Bulldogs. Both games will be televised by ABC (no more SEC Network), and the SEC Tournament hub over at the official site has the listen live/live stats links for those of you stuck somewhere without a TV.

UK/UT should be a good game
Probably mire at stake for UT since UK already has a #1 seed locked up.

Gotten chippy in the game from the 6m to til now
Several face to face conversations between UK and UT players, and Goings for UT threw a nasty elbow to Cousins on a high screen. Ejected.
I may be a little biased, but I think UThug is living up to their name on national television in the final minutes of this blowout.
62-43 with 3:00 to go in the game.
It's not what you've done but what you are doing that matters.
74-45, Kentucky distances UT
…but the game was close (if single digit leads for UK is close) up to the 10 minute mark of the game, then all sorts of ugliness happened, as mentioned above.
Oh, and the screen in question, Cousins was set and you can see Goings decide once he see’s the screen to thrust his elbow out into Cousin’s side. There was a bit of acting by the UK player, but it was opportune to say the least.

they were up by 16 at the half.
man, after that pantsing i’m even more impressed with the crimson tide effort yesterday.

UT did close it to 6 by the 10 minute mark. That was what I was basing the ‘close’ part on.

indeed they did. The beating they received brought a tear to my eye.

Bah, in other notes...
…Houston shocks CUSA and wins their tourney, SDSU beat New Mexico last night solidifying their spot in the dance.
I’m sure there are more, but this is starting to look like the NIT selection committee will have to look at the nature of Bama’s losses to consider them over other teams (ahem, scoreboard twice on the Cocks).

At this point...
…it looks to be tough to get in, but SC shouldn’t even be in the conversation for the NIT….

Some grace
…Illinois’ run ended finally with a 2OT game against OSU. Hope for a Cal beating of U-Dub (Washington for those who don’t know).
I’m looking at how Ole Miss’ RPI might change with a MSU run to the automatic bid…

…nevermind that, I thought Ole Miss beat MSU twice, not the other way around.

17:00 and the score is 44-29 MSU.
I think they might punch their ticket today with this quality win if the lead stands.

yeah
the conventional wisdom going into the tournament was that MSU needed two more big wins to climb in. Wins over tournament-bound Florida and top-25 Vandy would certainly qualify. If they do hold on and do punch their ticket, it would leave us second in line behind Ole Miss in the SEC pecking order for an NIT bid. We are definitely ahead of SC.
Sam houston St up 44-29 in Southland final
if they win that will be one less NIT bid-stealer. They are one of five potential bid-stealers still in play
Utah St in the WAC final at 9CT, ESPN2
they are another one of the five potential bid-stealers still in play.
UCSB in the Big West final at 7CT, ESPN2
they are also another one of the five potential bid-stealers
i'm pulling for KY tomorrow though
i will continue to respect their tradition until we are legitimate rivals….which i expect to be with CAG in a couple of years

Lehigh wins Patriot tournament (last night)
thankfully now just the three potential bid-stealers I listed above
right now there are 8 NIT bids gone
meaning there are only 24 NIT bids to be had, with possibly three more going to automatic qualifiers
Houston wins CUSA tournament
stealing both an NCAA bid and knocking an NCAA at-large team down to the NIT, thereby stealing an NIT bid too
so with sam houston's win
the two 9 pm games are all that’s left to take ‘our’ NIT spot if the fav loses?

yeah
i just shrieked out loud at that intentional foul where the tech guy went flying

ESPN bubble update
With Houston stealing a bid and bubble-dwellers Washington and Minnesota getting big wins in their conference tournaments, Florida has fallen all the way out of the projection. Mississippi State is now the very last team in and Florida and Ole Miss are the second and third teams out, respectively.
Things are going to be really interesting for all three tomorrow if MSU fails to beat UK for the automatic bid.
