The NCAA field is set. One SEC bubble team--the Florida Gators--will be dancing, while the other two--the Mississippi State Bulldogs and the Ole Miss Rebels--will instead play in the NIT. Bama's hopes are slim, but it's worth tuning in nevertheless.

they didn't shrink it, just allowed automatic qualifiers

but you’re right, we likely would have gotten in under the old format

first 8 revealed

looks very similar to NIT-ology’s projection…which is not good for us

season over for the Tide

Things went pretty much as expected, although myself and many others will question the inclusion of North Carolina, especially as a #4 seed.

it's north carolina...

if anyone’s name carries serious cachet, it’s them. and they are likely to bring viewers by the bushelfull – something the tourney prolly is keenly aware of.

Thanks Bama07 for clearing that up

props to NIT-ology

They were pretty much spot-on, only missing North Carolina and Northwestern, both of whom were actually seeded quite high. They also had NC State out, but that was because their last update was before NC State made a run in the ACC tournament. And I agree with their UNC projection—I think UNC belonged with us outside of the NIT bubble. In fact, I would have put us ahead of them. Anyway, going 30-for-32 is pretty good.

Sorry to see you guys didn't get in.

The four seed for UNC is simply unbelievable. I too would have had you guys in ahead of them, and yet they not only get in but get a good seed. Complete BS.

UNC bid

has offically made the NIT a joke.

Why pretend to be legit when you pull stuff like this.

Frankly I’m surprised that UNC has decided to play in the NIT. I remember us turning them down one year when we thought we did not deserve it. If UNC had turned down the invite that would have been class. But now all they are saying is “Hey it is all about name recognition.”

This would be like Bama going 6-6 next year and then getting invited to the Cotton Bowl or Citrus Bowl just because we were the defending NC while a 9-3 Arkansas got to go to the Music City and a 7-5 MSU stayed home.

I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.

ESPN headline: "UNC and Connecticut highlight NIT"

Both are four seeds. Sheesh. I wonder if ESPN made the selections themselves.

The NIT's been a joke for years

It’s always, always been about inviting the biggest-name teams it could get its grubby hands on while filling out the field w/ just enough deserving mid-majors to avoid any real criticism. “NIT invites undeserving North Carolina” is a headline on par with dog bites man.

They lost 12 of their last 16 games.

They basically lost their way into an NIT bid. Sort of reminds me of Auburn and the Outback.

That's true, but a couple of years ago the NCAA took over the tournament and promised that they would clean up the tournament's image.

This more or less disproves that assertion.

In the old days, there was really no myth of credibility or transparency. A private organization with financial stakes in the tournament made selections in consultation with ESPN, which meant that the field was always composed almost entirely of major conference teams with records around .500 that offered a good hosting venue and solid fan support. Now, selections are supposedly made in the same way that NCAA selections are made, with the theory being that the NIT will be composed of mid-major regular season champs and the best teams not to make the NCAAs. Didn’t happen that way this time, apparently.

Leave it to a South Carolina alum to explain the NIT.

Well, there weren't any Gator fans around to explain it...

Ya, was just taking a gratuitous cheap shot on the Gators.

But by all means, I will gladly give cheap shots to the ‘Cocks if you’d rather.

good summary

They actually have done a very good job since the NCAA took over of doing just what they were supposed to. And honestly this year they did so as well, with the exception of UNC. I guess the argument for them though was that their SOS was very high and they still finished .500. They also had two extremely good wins over NCAA #2 seed Ohio State and NCAA #5 seed Michigan State in the non-conference portion. Both committees this year seemed to be getting away from weighing the last ten games or so more heavily than the early part of the season. That’s the only way to explain UNC in.

Other than...

…a blanket statement about UF playing a tougher schedule, can you explain how they made the dance while MSU did not?

Any argument made will have an instant disqualifier.

Reference the bracket this year.

And no, it doesn’t matter what team you slot in “x” and in “y” of that question.

With that said, MSU got jobbed.

It's not what you've done but what you are doing that matters.

I'm not a big fan...

…of Rick Stansbury, but I can’t wrap my brain around it, other than the fact that UF travels better than MSU. I mean, seriously, where’s the BCS when you need it?
