Justin Knox to transfer

I am hearing that Justin Knox is going to transfer to UAB.  Anybody heard anything like this?  I know that he is going to graduate this semester.  I am a little shocked if true, because we don't have the depth and I thought he was really coming into his own later in the season.  However, I don know that UAB lacks any quality big men and he would be heavily featured if he went to UAB.

UAB...

…has ZERO quality big men, so he would be a big part of the team if he did transfer.

So...

since you pledge your allegiance to UAB hoops, would you be excited about this move?

Not really...

…I mean, he could help out immensely, but Mike Davis’s MO so far has been grabbing guys from other teams that are only going to be around for a year. Its like taking JUCO players that can help out immediately, but worse since they only have one year of eligibility left. He hasn’t lived up to his “omg recruiter!” hype at all and isn’t really developing players like he should. The only thing that would make me happy about UAB hoops would be either a) Mike Davis pulling his head out of his ass, realizing his shitty half court offense sucks when he does have shooters and is flat fucking useless when he doesn’t, and learning to make some in game adjustments from time to time or b) Mike Davis conning someone else into hiring him. I’d rather lose with a horrible coach than win just enough with a mediocre coach to keep his job safe but the program spinning its wheels.

I understand your beef.....

Mike Davis has this stigma of being a great recruiter, but I haven’t seen it. He lost Cousins and the other kid to West Virginia. I think he is underrated though in his development of players and xs and os. I wouldn’t have thought that this UAB team would win 12 games this season. Although the season was a letdown at the end of the season, this team overachieved. Look at the development of aaron Jonson.

He had Cousins...

…and some other top kids a few years ago, and the word around the campfire was that the whole “I’m committing to Davis, not UAB, and I want it in writing” drama with Cousins was Davis’s attempt to sign a bunch of big time players then shop around for a bigger job with the added bonus that he would be bringing all these top kids with him. No idea if that’s true, but I wouldn’t put it past him.

As for this year, it is the perfect example of why I hate him with a fiery passion. All through the start of the season when we were doing so well what were we doing? Pressing, pushing the ball, and just generally being a fast, aggressive basketball team. By the end of the season we quit doing it and Davis had the damn audacity in his postgame comments to talk about how the team plays better in transition and we don’t have any shooters then week in and week out would keep doing the same bullshit “slow it down and set up the offense.” It cost us against Memphis at home, it cost us against UTEP to close the season, and its why we were one and done in the conference tourney and lost to NC at home to end the NIT run. He is a horrible game coach.

I won't dispute...

…anything else you’ve said, but UAB lost to NC largely because they made too many dumb decisions with the basketball and turned it over too much. Of course, if what you’re saying is that UAB’s players are too dumb to run a half-court set, and they should just keep running so they don’t have time to think, then OK.

Some are too dumb to run it (I'm looking at you Howard Crawford)...

…but the biggest problem is we have no one that can shoot consistently. Milsap and Drake (two transfers, by the way) have their moments but Drake went cold midseason and you just never knew with Milsap. Hell, we lost to Memphis at home because Davis let Drake try to shoot out of his slump, just like he did with Vaden the season before. Neither one could buy a basket and yet there they were, setting them up to take shots. If you have players that can run, let ‘em run, don’t make ‘em stop and take shots they aren’t going to make.

I hear you...

…but what I saw in that NC game was Milsap catching fire, and Drake having a nice game…and then Crawford getting the ball over and over…and turning it over…over and over…. I just didn’t get why they didn’t at least keep feeding Milsap…that kid was unconscious at the start of the second half.

Don't get me started on Howard Crawford...

…how that kid got so many minutes is beyond me.

I would be willing to put money on it happening.

Although I root for Alabama and UAB basketball, I would prefer he stay at Alabama. He is spent most of his time at Tuscaloosa, but I understand if he wants to get more pt. I thought he was really coming in to his own.

might be a good thing

because it could mean we get Ratliffe or Cothron.

First of all, even if we don’t sign anyone else, we’ll have three seniors (Knox, Hines, Jemison) and our most talented player (Green) all in the post. That’s all well and good—two deep at both positions—but if we were to throw in a stud recruit like Cothron or especially Ratliffe into the mix, and at least one if not two of those seniors are spending their last days on the bench.

Maybe this is an indication that Grant feels good about getting one of these guys. Even if not, Jemison can step up to take his place, but that would leave us pretty thin once again.

I’ll comment more if it turns out to be the case.

I think you may be onto something.

Knox would stay at Bama with the situation as it now is. But if he felt we had someone coming in then he might move.

I hope Knox stays, but this could end up being good news.

I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.

Not sure he would want to ...

sit out a year at this juncture of his career unless its a mutual decision between himself and Coach Grant.

He will be a senior next year, right? If he transferred, he would have to sit out a year just to play one year, right? That doesn’t make a lot of sense to me but I guess it doesn’t have to.

by BrandonB5 on Mar 30, 2010 2:33 PM CDT reply actions

Nope....

He will graduate with a degree. Same reason Kenneth Cooper and George Drake were eligible for UAB
