"He's a big, fat blob," an NFC personnel man said [about Terrence Cody]. "He's a big media creation. If you want a guy to play 10 plays a game and make maybe one play in those 10, then that's your guy. He can't move. He just stands there. He cannot move at all."
From a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article examining Cody's prospects in the NFL.
Seriously. What the hell is it with these people? First they bag on Rolando and now Cody. Nobody in their right mind expects any college player to transition to the NFL seamlessly but to consider either of these two a bust before they even show up at their first training camp is beyond ludicrous.
But what I'm really sick of are these "analysis stories" with anonymous sources. If you are going to critique a guy get it on the record or STFU. The NFL guys saying these things are reprehensible for doing it under such conditions and the news outlets are even worse for letting them.

which is EXACTLY why papers shouldn't print this crap.

We’re in the week of the draft now. The more negative things you hear, the more teams are interested in a guy.

back in the early-1990s i lived in dallas
and watched while a once-superb paper, the times herald, completed a death-spiral into oblivion. as the dallas morning news ate up more and more of the circulation base the times herald’s reporting became more and more shrill. the stories became prettty much the level of tabloid fodder and the screaming massive headlines became the rule, not the exception.
and it did absolutely nothing to stave off the inevitable.

seriously
I don’t want to be a complete homer – Cody certainly has some potential issues with the weight. But it’s one thing to criticize, and it’s another to call someone “a big, fat blob.”

I like that part
It does a pretty good job of demonstrating that the speaker is emotionally invested in the evaluation and not just providing an objective viewpoint.
Probably the same reason he’s anonymous.

They are right...
He does just stand there…WHILE HE"S TAKING UP 3 BLOCKS AND ALLOWS THE LB"S TO ROAM FREELY TO EAT UP RB’s LIKE GODZILLA ON A EATING BINGE IN TOKYO….
Good god…do these guys not understand the position he plays? He’s not a DT..He’s a NT. BIG! HUGE! difference. He’s not going to have that many sacks.. and for that matter he won’t have that many tackles. ITS NOT HIS JOB. His job is make LB’s lives easier…which is something he does to perfection…Just ask Ro.
Now..he could work on his first step. He’s a little slow and getting in position is rule #1 for any DL. But that will come.

HOW CAN YOU WASTE A FIRST ROUND PICK ON GUYS CLEARLY BENEFITING FROM SUCH AN UNFAIR ADVANTAGE?

i guess we need to
vacate all wins that Cody played in AND stop whining cause our NT made our LB into an all american, Butkis award winning, National Championship Trophy holding beast of a man…
God its a nice view from the F’ing mountain top…

Sadly, I've heard both arguments from NFL fans
“Cody’s just too fat to move and McClain made him look good!”
Or
“McClain is slow! I saw his highlights on YouTube and he is only does anything because Cody is in front of him.”
We were really terrible on defense last year.

thank goodness we weren’t “exposed” by colt mccoy in the title game.

We (Alabama fans) can’t take it personally when some NFL scout/guy has some negative opinion on one of our dudes. Every single prospect has some folks singing their praises, while someone in the same front office thinks they are a multi-million dollar bag of disaster. Not to mention all the misdirection and inter-scout politics. I’d also be willing to bet this GM was intoxicated, ala Jerry Jones, I mean, how often do you call a man a fat blob?
Chris Brown’s AWESOME piece in the NYT blog today ends with a great line about this, “There will be sleepers and busts and would-be gurus, but don’t listen to any one expert. Listen to all of them.” And the general consensus seems to be he’s one of the top couple of nose tackle prospects, but not even on the radar of teams running the 4-3 looking for smaller linemen.

for the most part, these stories have been decently done on a whole
i’m just flabbergasted at the insistence on inserting this kind of asinine quote from an anonymous “expert” about the player’s chances. is it that hard to get a qualified expert to express the reservations about a particular player for the record? none of these guys is without gaps in their game and caveats to the accolades no matter how well deserved. wouldn’t it be a more informative article to clearly articulate these points rather than just print some kind of sensational comment?

the enquirer doesn’t really waste the effort on creating the pretense of being a reputable news publication. (pulitzer prize submissions or no)

Wow, this quote more like
A comment you would read on an NFL team blog from some random Internet yay-hoo, not a person paid for their ability to analyze and scout players professionally.
Of course, as has been noted, this is likely just misdirection, but still, its sad that anyone would use that as an excuse to make such overtly disparaging comments.
Terrence will just have to dry his tears on the huge piles of money he’s about to receive.

People who make...
…such comments either hold a personal grudge or simply have a low moral code, or both. Yes, it’s a shame we live in a society where this kind of garbage gets circulated on such a grand level, but we’ve been ruled by what sells since at least the 1980s (and that was before the interwebz). Just do what your mama always told you to do when somebody says something ugly: hold your tongue, turn your head, and walk away.

an NFC personnel man
That doesn’t an NFC defensive coordinator. It doesn’t say an NFC defensive line coach. It doesn’t even say an NFC coach. It says an NFC personnel man, which could very easily mean the comment was made by the Arizona Cardinal’s media relations assistant to the Scouting Director.

I was listening to FoxSports Radio yesterday...
And heard an old NFL guy/scout/talent evaluator and he said they would put out “false negative and false positive” info on players to small-time reporters and beat guys that would get a fair amount of response just to lead OTHER teams astray from their true intentions. He made a point about getting teams away from their REAL interest, whether it was bad or good, as long as it wasn’t what they REALLY thought about a player. Of course these guys think it’s “cloak and dagger” stuff, but they are messing with paychecks. As long as it isn’t theirs, I guess they’re okay.

you are on thin enough ice with the anonymous source, why imperil your credibility with one that’s loaded as well?

My favorite English teacher
always told her students (when someone was picking on someone else) that they wouldn’t pick on you if they didn’t like you. Maybe whoever said this about both Ro and Cody really do like them, want them on their team and are bad mouthing them hoping it will turn other teams off of them…

this is similarly idiotic...
“While I’m bullish on Berry, I’m not putting much stock in Alabama’s overweight defensive tackle, Terrence Cody. He seemed to take plays off and wasn’t always dominant against college linemen. I think he won’t be as great a factor when facing more effective pro linemen.”
…but at least he had the balls to put his name on what he had to say.
Roll 'Bama Roll: The Champagne of 'Bama Blogs.
He doesn't move?
Then explain why a NT ran a 5.6…when Colt McCoy and Suh both ran near 5. Dan Williams, the prototype 4-3 DT ran a 5.2…
I dare say that Cody would smoke most of us in the 40, even though as as run-busting 3-4 NT, his job is to eat up the middle and push straight up the line, not engage in back-side pursuit.
