I saw THIS article over at Dr. Saturday on how much Lane Kiffin is making at USC. All I needed was to know about why Kiffin left UT in such a hurry is this..
Lane Kiffin has won all of 12 games in a little over two years as head coach at Tennessee and the Oakland Raiders, neither of which seemed very appreciative of his efforts as he slinked out of town. As far as Southern Cal is concerned, though, they're all worth their weight in gold: According to a report on HBO's "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel,"set to air Tuesday night, Kiffin will make $4 million a year at USC, or roughly $333,333 per career win to date.
Emphasis mine of course but Are you serious?!?! Of course he left UT! I'm thinking the conversation went something like this..
[Mike Garrett calls Kiffin on his UT cell]
Mike Garrett SC AD: Hello Kiff. Wanna come coach football over here on the West Coast, at a school that owns the Pac 10, for an easy 2 MILLION DOLLAR RAISE?
[there's about 30 sec's of silence]
Mike Garrett SC AD: Hello?? Anyone there? [he looks down at his phone to see if they got disconnected]
[ the phone works yet more silence]
Mike Garrett SC AD: Look...you won't have to play Florida and Alabama every year. Instead you'll get UCLA and Washington State [you hear Garrett chuckle in the back ground]
All of a sudden the phone gets disconnected. Minutes later Garrett gets a call from a Plane..
Lane Kiffin: You had me at hello..
Seriously...who here wouldn't leave an OK job in a much tougher environment, for a easier better job (even though it might come with a few strings attached i.e. probation) for an extra 2 mill a year?...oh yeah..he also gets his dad an extra million thrown in..
As much as it pains me...Kiffin made the smart choice.
