Alabama Crimson Tide Players In the NFL
While putting together the roundup of Alabama players in NFL rookie mini camps, I started wondering about how the Crimson Tide is represented league-wide right now. So, with a bit of internet searching I came up with the answers...
Currently, there are 32 former Alabama players on 19 different NFL rosters (that might change a bit by the time the season starts if some of the unsigned free agents catch on somewhere or others don't make the cut).
Right now Kansas City is Tuscaloosa West with a whopping five former Tiders on the team. Four teams - Atlanta, Baltimore, Cincinnati and Houston - have three former Alabama players under contract and three - Arizona, Pittsburgh and St. Louis - boast two.
The dean of Alabama players in the pros is Pittsburgh corner Deshea Townsend who was picked up by the Steelers in the fourth round of the 1998 NFL Draft. He is the only active NFL player to have been coached by the legendary Gene Stallings.
The former Crimson Tide player next in seniority is Jarrett Johnson who was picked up by the Ravens in the fourth round of the 2003 draft (making him the last remnant of the not-so-legendary Mike Dubose era).

Just a quick correction
Townsend was drafted in 1998 not 1988
I'll put you through hell, but at the end of it all we'll be champions.

wow - i really didnt think we had that many
i have noticed that some of the other CFB blogs do a weekly round-up during the season. i would love it if we could add something like that here, especially given our fondness for the most recent crop…

i can't promise that...
but the main reason i did this was to have a post with links to their sb nation pages so i could better keep track of their comings and goings. a number of guys got free agent contracts in april (like brodie croyle, for example) but there wasn’t any way to keep track of it. so we’ll see what happens down the road.

I thought Brodie got cut?

What you're seeing is team spirit. It's like the Holy Spirit, but more powerful.

that's exactly the thing i wanted to check on that prompted this effort
brodie penned a new contract on april 15. according to arrowhead pride he had been offered a $1.759 million tender but i dont know if he accepted that or got a new deal.

Gilberry's working with KC now?
IIRC he signed up with the Giants in free agency his first year. Guess he’s been moving around. I always really liked him, wondered how he’d turn out if he had more time with Saban & Co.
Yup
Doing pretty well, actually. Was second on the team in sacks last year, even though he was only in on 3rd Downs and obvious pass situations.

glad to hear it!
Shows you how much I keep up with the NFL. I’m glad at least someone from that year has had some NFL success. Like I said, I liked Gillberry a lot – he was kind of a gem in a class that was mostly a little too undisciplined to really execute what Saban was trying to do.
Led the SEC in TFL that year
And if I’m not mistaken, Bama was the only major program to extend him an offer outta hs

It is the Chiefs though,
That’s like being the second leading scorer for the Nets.

Kinda true
It was only 4.5 sacks. But considering both the starting DEs had zero, not bad.

I'd like to know how
Bama’s 32 players compares with some other schools like UF, Auburn, and UT.
I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.
