Crimson and White Roundtable: Got Questions if You Want 'em
Since it's been sort of the MO lately, I'm posting the questions first so everyone can get started and then I'll chime in later in the week with my answers. Here we go:
1. I never thought I'd say this, but watching that two run homer sail over the fence yesterday my heart sunk almost as low as it did in the '08 SEC Championship Game when Wilson threw the INT that ended the game. I don't know if it's just the offseason and a desperate need to have something to root for or if I've really started liking softball, but either way I was upset that the season was over and am all excited about next year. Have y'all developed an unexpected affection for any of the non-revenue sports during the offseason, and if so which ones?
2. Back to football, which team on the upcoming schedule are you most looking forward to facing and why?
3. Its hard to imagine Jim McElwain not making the leap to a head coaching position sometime soon. When that sad day comes, who would be your dream OC hire to take his place?
4. In that same vein, which OC that Alabama will face this year would you send an unmarked van filled with goons to "disappear" and then replace with a cosmetically surgified to look just like them Jeff Bowden?
5. Finally, what is the one thing you are most looking forward to when football season finally gets here?
As always the questions and links to the participating blogs can be found over at the C&W Roundtable Blog.

no.5 is the easiest
The ability to drink before 11am without the stigma. As for no. 1 you’ll have to come to a softball game next year they are one of the funnest things to do and they are cheap.

My answers
1.I agree that was a heart-breaker, I would also say that losing to LSU in extras was almost as bad. Hopefully though this is the start of baseball getting back where to the top of the SEC
2. Florida on October 2nd. Usally it’s the Third Saturday in October that decides wether or not an Alabama team will be great or merely good. This year I feel it will be Florida because Tennesse seems to be down and likely will be for a couple of years at least. That being said, if there’s a game I fear could be the end of the regular season win streak, this is it.
3. I have no clue honestly. Just someone who would continue to do what Alabama does on offense.
4. Gus Malzhan. Be honest, could Auburn win right now without him?
5. College Football Saturdays. Nothing like them!
It's hard to say what's been most impressive. The seamless jump from AA? The ability to hit for average? The ability to hit for power? The 18 walks in 111 trips to the plate? The flair for the dramatic? When you're trying to isolate the most impressive aspect of Jason Heyward's game, there's a lot to choose from, and it's only been a month and a half.
1. no
2. florida, twice. these games are going to be epic. i can smell an HBO documentary about these games. i think we’re going to play 6 times in 4 seasons and each time both teams will be ranked in the top 10, probably top 5.
3. norm chow? (or someone like him. pro style, run centric, not afraid to mix it up w/ passes and using RB’s in the slot etc. get the ball in your playmakers’ hands)
4. steve addazio, twice.
5. PAIN!!!!

Our non-revenue sports can be divided
into three groups. Those that are good, those that are average, and those that stink. The good ones are: Men’s Cross Country, Gymnastics (they make actually make money with their crowds), Men’s & Women’s Golf, Softball, and yes Baseball. The average ones are Women’s CC, Rowing, Men’s Tennis, Swimming (both) and Track (both). Those that stink are Women’s BB, Soccer, Women’s Tennis, and Volleyball.
Frankly, when you are talking about non-revenue sports I would only really follow teams that are good. For example I’ll go to a gym meet because we are good, but I would not go watch a soccer game because we stink.
The bottom line is that for the less profile sports you need to win to gain any real fan support. Let’s be honest if our softball team was not really good no one would even care. But, they are really good and so they draw really good crowds.
So, the Alabama sports I really like and go to games beside FB & Mens BB, are Gymnastics, Softball, and Baseball. I follow golf very closely, but it is a tough spectator sport. But, when when we are in the NCAA’s I will watch them on TV.
My daughter ran High School Cross-Country for 5 years and I still don’t know how you are supposed to watch that sport, but I was excited with the Bama men’s season.
I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.
True they are cool
We hear at manna sponsor them a little.

SEC Bama beatdowns.
1.Seeing the Bama girls lose like that. And don’t they have the cutest pitchers?
2.Auburn.To whup the tar out of that football coaching imposter Chiznik again, this time in T Town.
3.Good question but I don’t have a clue.Just hope Saban can keep him from leaving, and the trustee’s step up to the plate with some extra $$ for him.
4.Malzahn
5.How well Mark and Trent have matured and the damage they will inflict on defense’s.And the pageantry of college football.
1. I realize this probably doesn’t count, but this was the season I really got into our Mens BB program. I was trying to follow softball as well, but all forms of baseball I’ve seen have kind of bored me, so I wasn’t able to muster up the effort to watch the game without it being readily available on TV. I definitely want all our teams to do well, but there are some sports I just don’t really like to watch. I’d like to see our tennis teams, but that will probably involve going to an actual game, and I need someone to go with.
2. Penn State should be a great matchup. Florida is exciting of course, but we have the chance to play them twice.
3. Honestly I guess I’m just not “in the know” when it comes to OCs across the country. In any case, I do trust Saban to make the right decision when that day comes.
4. Easy – Malzahn. He tricked all the Aubies into thinking he’s hot shit because they got a couple easy TDs against us last year (we can also blame our weak link in Special Teams and an interception called back from an AUBURN penalty). The worst part is, as Richie Grogan mentioned, he’s actually probably one of the biggest reasons Auburn has been able to win the games they have.
5. Getting to be in the student section of the newly expanded BDS for one final year before I’m gone from the university.

I talked to our Tennis coach, Coach Pate the other day..
he’s a cool guy that’s come out to watch Chinese Dentist play. I told him that wellthatscool was looking for a team to get behind and he was all about it. So we are gonna champion them as our team and get groups up to go watch them play. So if your down I’ll make sure I let you know.

1) I’m really looking forward to hockey and curling season for the… oh, we don’t have those teams. Guess I’ll just look forward to next year with softball. Expectations will be through the roof.
2) Arkansas and Florida. Yes, I know that’s two and not one. But both might give trouble to the defensive secondary and make me a sad panda those days.
3) Whoever Saban wants. He’s the CEO of this ship.
4) That’s a trick question. Bet you’re going to have everyone answer Malzhan (scans up, looks surprised to see Tempe with my answer). Steve Addazio scares me more, but we’ll see if he has a Harvin type player to be an X-factor and to give me heartburn.
5) Tailgating. Nothing like heading to the lot with your friends just to drink/eat/cheer all day. Only thing that sucks in my case is the games I go to are not Bama games. The things I’ll do to get my fix. At least I have my championship gear to make ASU fans jealous they can’t be this good represent the Bama nation.

That white stuff on the top of chickencrap is.....chickencrap.
they are not under the athletic department

Wow, count one for you.
Considering your info below I can see why I missed that. If it wasn’t on rolltide.com I wasn’t aware of the team…

1. I too watched the softball and baseball games and I HATE those sports normally. Yes it’s the offseason but I think it’s more than that. After our beloved football team won all the glory we are dedicated to being champions in everything we do. If that means I must watch (and get extremely pissed off when we lose) baseball/softball then so be it.
2. Penn St. Because I really respect JoPa and Bobby Bowden. I’m glad we played Bowden before he retired and I’m glad we’re playing Paterno before he retires. I think that is something special to be apart of.
3. It would probably not be any of the normal names in the hat. I really don’t have a name but I would want it to be a young relativly new dude on the cutting edge. Deffinately not an old fart that has bounced around the college landscape for 30 years. And I hope Jim grooms him.
4. lol dont know
5. I JUST WANT SOME FOOTBALL NOW!!!!
1. (Warning:following comment may be somewhat Sexist) I like to watch the women’s sports but end up visualizing them all naked. Softball will get the nod though because they are all about the process as well.
2. Penn State. One of my good friends from the office is a huge PSU fan, he is an older gentleman and his affinity for the school is infinite. Plus I think that we will destroy them and if we can deliver heart attacks to opposing coaches with nothing more than a glare from the Sabanator, well then I fear for old guy.
3. Hopefully by that time advanced cloning techniques will be furthered. I imagine a Mini-Saban ala Mini Dr. Evil from Austin Powers. He can even be cloned to actually look like the midgit from Austin Powers and then dressed up like Saban. We may need to put him up in the box. Also he would need to be a Mini-Mini-Saban just to make sure there are not mix-ups…I can already see the fiasco in the media room when that mistake is made!
4. I would like to see Malzahn picked up, beat up pretty badly, and then dropped back off. Just give him a shiner to wear for the Iron Bowl. I think that one trick pony has well …one trick.
5.BigBadWolves BBQ Nachos @ my secret seat / perch on top of Subway/outside of that Italian restaurant that is always closed on gamedays. Dont take my secret spot!

1. this is an interesting question since, as a former student of alabama but graduate of another school i’m in something of a quandry. while i’m fine in terms of football (my alma mater did not have a football program) i’m torn when it comes to other sports.
still, as a member of the RBR junta, i’m dedicated to promoting all sports affiliated in any way with the university of alabama and damn proud of what the softball team accomplished. it was a hell of a lot of fun to follow them this season (even if it was in a criminally sporatic manner.
2. penn state. in 1986 i arrived in tuscaloosa as an out-of-state student who liked football and got into the process of loving it. the 23-3 drubbing by the nittany lions was my first taste of loss as an alabama fan and i didn’t like it one bit. i’m damned excited to be going to this game.
3. at the risk of sounding like a blind follower of the process… whoever saban wants. at this point, i’ve seen too much of saban’s organization to believe he would not be ready for staff turnover as well. he has pushed the administration for more pay to retain his assistants but he’s obviously aware their success at alabama is going to make them very good candidates elsewhere. turnover is inevitable. it would be far far better for him to fill their shoes with a lesser known guy he’s 100% about in terms of their capabilities and how they would fit in his system then grabbing the hottest guy on the market atm. i’m confident he’s looked at possible candidates, probably had informal contact with them and is evaluating what would need to be done if mcelwain or smart got that offer too good to turn down.
4. i’m less intimidated by addazio after seeing florida’s offensive production slump last year and i’m not sure malzahn is more than a bag of tricks (which works great for the first quarter but after that not so much). i guess the guy that scares me the most is arkansas’ garrick mcgee precisely for the reason malzahn scared me last year – we really have no idea what to expect from him. petrino with a good quarterback is going to be a formidable problem for any green defense but throw in an x-factor and it’s not a pleasant scenario at all. a cosmetically-surgified-to-look-just-like-them jeff bowden would be much more of a known quantity.

i’m with you todd. my heart and stomach hurt at the end of that softball game. so much that i didn’t even watch the remainder of the baseball game. SO MUCH THAT I DIDN’T READ OR COMMENT ON RBR FOR TWO DAYS. i hate that pit in my stomach and it honestly as anxious as i am about there being only 94 days to kickoff, i am getting nervous too. i don’t want to feel that feeling but i know most folks expect us to drop one or heaven forbid TWO this year. part of what made the loss to florida so heart wrenching in 08 was that i had forgotten how losing felt. that softball game made me remember again.
