UA limiting Justin Knox's transfer options
Not letting him transfer to another SEC school is understandable. Refusing to grant a release for him to go to UAB, a school we notoriously don't play in men's basketball, is something else. I can't interpret this as anything but being mean.

I don't necessarily think it's mean...
… I just think it’s reflective of how weak our basketball program is right now.

I stick with mean
The news that they are letting Jocelyn Shaw transfer to UAB just compounds it, especially as we do play UAB in women’s ball. “You can transfer to UAB if we don’t care about your sport.”
I think Todd (below) has it right.
I don’t think we care about UAB or are that worried about recruiting against them, although occasionally we might compete for a few in-state recruits (remember, UAB is legitimately on the level of at least the lower-tier major schools when it comes to bball tradition).
From what I’ve heard, Grant feels (rightly) that Davis and UAB have been seeking out in-state upperclassmen from other schools to finish out their final year in Bham. Grant wants to nip this problem in the bud, and although we might get some bad press for it right now, this will keep Davis from reaching in behind our backs in the future.
Honestly...
…I’m not surprised. I’ve said on here before that Mike Davis’s recruiting MO these days is to poach one year transfer players from other schools (Elijah Milsap and George Drake for example) that can help immediately, and Knox is that kind of kid. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this is Grant’s way of saying “&*$^ off Davis, you want high end recruits recruit ‘em yourself ’cause you’re not getting mine.”
