The New Compliance Arms Race
We've heard nearly endless whining from USC partisans about how expecting high-risk players to receive high-quality monitoring is unfair and bad for everyone.
This post from the Bylaw Blog posits a much less insane proposition: that the result of the ruling could be an arms race amongst top-tier Division I programs. It's an interesting read.

fantastic idea!
until the ncaa comes in and kills it, of course.

That proposed rule would have absolutely zero impact on the compliance department — it applies only to single-sport-specific staff.
I'm wrong all the time.
i know that...
but i figure it’s just a matter of time.

I cannot imagine the NCAA adding a rule limiting the number of compliance personnel. Part of the draw of limiting support personnel is that they’re difficult to monitor and deal with from a compliance perspective.
If you’ve got compliance officers breaking NCAA Bylaws, you have far bigger problems than the NUMBER of them.

That is absolutely one of the most wonkishly cool sites ever...

I'm putting that on my self-gloss page.
Thanks!

It is an interesting read
And really, top football programs should have been racing to beef up their compliance departments years ago. In any case, while this is a good idea, it seems to me the exact thing that USC fans are raving will somehow “destroy” college football. The idea that programs shouldn’t be held accountable for having little to no compliance is ridiculous, as is the idea that it is somehow “wrong” or “crazy” to monitor big stars (i.e., bigger risks) more heavily than benchwarmers. Hell, I’d feel as though I were making a straw man argument here except that I’ve actually SEEN multiple comments from USC fans making these claims.

how many compliance officers do we have?
