World Cup Thread: Part I
I figure maybe we should consolidate our general World Cup-ness into one thread (except for US game threads, those could stand to be separate.) Anyway, thought this might be a good idea. Don't forget to 'rec it' so it'll sticky the thread.

When does this thing start again?
Is it the 11th? All the friendly matches are over, right?

1) Yes, it starts this Friday, the 11th.
2) The US friendlies are over since we play on the 2nd day of the tournament. Teams who start much later still have some friendlies remaining.

Here's the order (and some reasoning) in which I want teams to win the 2010 World Cup
This is based on a not-so-meticulous system of where I’m from, where I’ve been, where I want to go, rivalries, teams I hate, etc. Enjoy…or not…I don’t really care. I’m bored at work.
01: United States – I’m from America. Duh.
02: Greece – The place is awesome. I could live there.
03: Serbia – I have a thing for Eastern Europe.
04: New Zealand – Been there. It rocks a great rocking. Kiwis are super cool too.
05: Slovenia – See Serbia comment
06: Slovakia – See Slovenia comment
07: Japan – Almost moved there
08: Cameroon – Fell in love with the Indomitable Lions at Italia 90.
09: Nigeria – One of my best friends is from there.
10: South Africa – Gotta love on the hosts.
11: Algeria – They’re nicknamed “The Desert Foxes”…how cool is that?
12: Côte d’Ivoire – I’d like to see someone not from South America or Europe win it.
13: Ghana – See Côte d’Ivoire comment.
14: Honduras – Can get behind any CONCACAF team not called Mexico winning it.
15: Paraguay – Went to a US vs. Paraguay game once. Their fans seemed cool.
16: Chile – Woohoo! Skinny country!
17: Switzerland – About half-way through the list so that’s pretty neutral.
18: Netherlands – Total football is amazing, though they have some snobby players.
19: France – I sometimes feel like one of the few Americans that doesn’t mind France or the French.
20: Brazil – The undisputed masters of the game. I’m tired of them winning it though.
21: Denmark – A former coach of their pissed me off saying something racist about African teams. I haven’t gotten over that.
22: Uruguay – They’ve won it twice, but could be compared to Minnesota Golden Gophers…it’s been a while.
23: South Korea – Still haven’t forgiven them for their lame-o celebration against us the 2002 World Cup.
24: Australia – Aussies are cool, but we have too much competition with them in the Olympics for them to be any higher.
25: Spain – Some of their players annoy me. I’d love to visit the country though.
26: Portugal – A lot of their players annoy me. I’d love to visit the country though.
27: North Korea – They stand no chance of winning it, so why not #27?
28: Germany – Tired of them winning it.
29: Argentina – Maradonna annoys me and I’m tired of them winning it.
30: England – Take that former colonialists!
31: Italy – REALLY tired of them winning it.
32: Mexico – That’d be like pulling for Auburn or Tennessee to win something.

Oh man...
… I need to do a list like that, but I’m afraid it might not satisfy the politically correct crowd.

So realistically..
you’ll be pulling for the Fightin’ dreamsicles if the US gets knocked out? I also agree with you on the French. However, the less I have to look at Ribery, the better
Does...
…Greece = dreamsicles?

I know you'll
be supporting Greece, but do you think they have a legitimate shot of winning it? I guess I was referring to the contender (in the handful of teams who have a shot) who you would support, since Greece-Switzerland (from your list) don’t see to have the “it” to get it done.
Well
I know you’ll be supporting Greece, but do you think they have a legitimate shot of winning it?
I don’t think they have a legitimate shot despite winning Euro 2004. This is only their 2nd World Cup ever and they didn’t even make it out of the first round that time. Who knows, maybe lightning will strike twice. If we can’t do it, i just assume they do.

I know
there’s an entire thread dedicated to the topic….but where would you recommend watching USA/England in B’ham? It seems like Rojo is the consensus, but it’s not a very large place.
I was at that show too.
It was unreal.

My List
I’m not going to do a comprehensive list, but I’ll throw in some teams I’d like to see win it all.
The US (Obviously)
Côte d’Ivoire — I feel like they are talented enough, they are exciting to watch and I’d also like to see an African team win.
France — Visited in 09 and fell in love with the country. I was in a sports bar (or close approximation to one) and Lyon (the city I was in) was playing their arch rival (from what some dude there was telling me) Grenoble, and it was pretty wild. Their passion for the sport amazed me.
Netherlands — Also really fun to watch.
Japan — They play an interesting game, I enjoy their style.
and I won’t be rooting for them, but…
Germany — I have a lot of friends who are exchange students in the German House at UA who I used to kick around the soccer ball with and if Germany did well, I’d be happy for them. Also my best friend has been living there for a little over a year now.
Fight on, fight on, fight on men! Remember the Rose Bowl, we’ll win then.
Lame-o?
I thought that 2002 Korean goal celebration—for anyone wondering, they did a quick parody of Apolo Ohno, with one guy pretending to skate and a second guy wildly exaggerating an imaginary “bump” a la Ohno’s performance at the ’02 games—was a pretty damn clever bit of smack. Sure, it was anti-U.S., but I have to give them their props for creativity.
Besides: Ohno’s a douche. I rooted for him like crazy at all three Games because he’s American and was the only thing standing in the way of total Korean domination. But he’s a douche.
I’ll ask before I just start link-whoring, but: should I link up my “Casual Fan’s Guide to the U.S. Men’s National Team” post from earlier this week?
It was clever...
…but douchey because nobody really cares about speed skating.

I understand your reasoning for 28-32
But I’d just have to put North Korea last

For those wanting to join: You need to create your profile first then make sure you key in the subleague name of RollBamaRoll.
Of course the second I completed my prediction, I wanted to change it. I still think Spain’s got the best shot, but Brazil’s defensive mindset could upset them. Logic being that if the U.S. can upset Spain, then they have given a blueprint for the more skillful Brazilial squad to do the same thing.
Thanks for clarifying that.
And just FYI, I get emails when someone joins the subleague, so I may not approve you right off during the day but I’ll have it done each evening.

Dubai
I am sitting in Dubai waiting for my connecting flight into Cape Town. I got a bunch of Roll Tides on my flight to Dubai. Met some kids who are starting here this fall and a graduate who works here in Dubai. The kids who are starting here are going to some of the same games as me and staying in the same area. If we meet up again I will try and get a picture of Bama fans supporting the Tide from Cape Town.

while listening to a local sports talk radio show the other day
the jock (are you still a disc-jockey if you don’t spin records?) recommended a blog called the unlikely fan which is currently doing a series on ‘the world cup for dummies’. i like it – specifically a post from May 10th entitled the world cup translated into american which compares each world cup team to an american sports team. the analogies will make it MUCH more interesting for me to enjoy non-usa games since i doubt i’ll be invested in them.
i’m curious what you true soccer fans think of the comparisons and hoping someone would make it even MORE relevant for me (and probably others) by using the same technique but substituting more college football teams?

Slovenia...
…beat Algeria. A scoreless draw between the two of them would have been the best, but oh well, we’re still in control of our own destiny.
RollBamaRoll.com - Also check out my music blog: Hear the World, which is exploring the music of MALI in June 2010.
that result really hurts us
Now, if we lose to Slovenia, we’re done. That’s a lot of pressure for the next game.
Here’s what’s at stake:
-win Friday: we are all but in. A tie against Algeria would then guarantee us a spot in the playoffs. A win against Algeria could get us #1 in the group. Even a loss against Algeria and we could very well still have enough to go through.
-tie Friday: Slovenia will remain ahead of us by two points. England will likely move ahead of us by three points (assuming they handle Algeria). However, if England were to then beat Slovenia (as expected), a win against Algeria would clinch us a spot. In other words, we’d still be alive in the last game with a good chance of getting the results we need. Would put even more pressure on us for the last one though, and we would no longer control our own destiny.
-lose Friday: we’re done. We fall behind Slovenia by five points, meaning they become out of reach. England would likely move ahead of us by three points. The only way to save ourselves would be to beat Algeria by several goals and hope (fruitlessly) that England will somehow unimaginably choke and lose outright to either Algeria or Slovenia.
after watching them play each other

Agreed.
If we can’t beat Slovenia we don’t deserve to go through – end of story. Their touches were dodgy and their attacking made us look dangerous by comparison.
On another note: Jozy Altidore – I’m not sold on him. Perfect service from Donovan and he closes his eyes on the header, glancing it wide. Beats the guy around the edge (very nice) then shoots near post when he had Dempsey square (which is what you are supposed to do). If he’s unselfish there, we score and get 4 pts. How many starts do you give him at this level? I know he’s young, but come on!
Props to Bradley and Howard though. They both had stellar performances. I’m just ticked over our constant/consistently slow starts. We almost conceded a goal at the kickoff. The fricking kick off!!!
Finally – not a lot of love for the Brits. The tackle against Biddle where he tried to scissor/wrap the leg after the first foot whacked him and Heskey’s studs up challenge after the ball was clearly away, just trashy play in my book.
Howard looked great

On another note: Jozy Altidore – I’m not sold on him.
He has the first touch of a brick wall. I’ve never been a big fan of his. Scoring a lot of goals against Panama and Trinidad isn’t a stellar resume.

How does the tying thing work once we reach single-elimination?

Extra time is added [duration needed] and after that if it's still tied they go to penalty kicks.
I believe the penalty kicks are five to a side, and the extra time is 30 minutes. If I’m mistaken someone will correct me.

…what is this “golden goal”

Golden Goal,
refers to the winning goal in a sudden death format, I believe. I think the way that the World Cup is doing it is that the 15 minute periods will be just that, 15 minute periods. Whoever leads at the end of the overtime period wins, or, if still tied (regardless of how many overtime goals were scored) it goes to another.
There used to be...
…different kinds of overtime.
1. Regular overtime: Two fifteen minute periods played out in full regardless of which team scores first.
2. Golden goal overtime: The game is over immediately upon scoring.
3. Silver goal overtime: The game is over at the end of the first half of overtime if a team scores in the half. The 2nd half of overtime won’t be played if a goal has been scored during the first half.
Regardless of which of those formats were used, penalty kicks would be used to settle what overtime didn’t. Each team gets five kicks (they alternate) and the best of those five wins. If it’s tied after the first five kickers, it goes to sudden death PKs.

All of that going to say...
….I’m 99% sure they’re using regular overtime and then into PKs.

So we're a few games in and what are your thoughts so far?
Here are some random thoughts from the games I’ve taken in to date:
Finishing: There seems to be a lack of it this WC. For those new to the game any team can shoot but finishing is getting the ball in the back of the fricking net. Despite all of the talk about how bad the ball is (particularly in flight – see Paraguay keeper), we’re still seeing low scores. Out of 11 games played to date, only 3 have produced games where a team scored more than 1 goal.
Germany: Jury is still out on Germany despite their 4 goal victory. We could have hung 5 goals on the Aussies due to their poor defending and sloppy play out of the back. To date they do have some of the best goals in the tourney. The first one was about 22-25 out and it was a laser.
Waxing Nostalgic: I’m missing the maestros this WC. Lionel Messi has impressed (other than his lack of finishing), but where are the brilliant playmakers. Perhaps we must wait for Portugal and Brazil to get started or perhaps the teams are continuing to gel during group stages, but for the love of the game – GIVE ME SOMETHING BRILLIANT!!
Howlers: We have a few already: Green – UK keeper, Serbia – Flying hand ball – Paraguay – missed cross – Denmark – if you call that a defensive header (own goal)
Hopefully the upcoming batch of games will impress. Don’t get me wrong. Love to watch soccer, but I’m waiting to see that jaw dropping play where you say “THAT’S a world class player.”

Field players have complained about it a lot too, not just keepers. They’re saying it isn’t “kicking correctly” and also that the high altitude of many of the fields is impacting things because the ball is lighter. They said it was also super windy in Bloemfontein. Don’t know if that’s been a problem elsewhere.

Seriously?
Players have been complaining about new balls for the past couple of World Cups and this one has been used in various tournaments for the past 7 months. At some point you would expect the best players in the world to get used to it.

What tournaments has this one been used in?
And it’s usually keepers or field players that complain, but it’s been pretty across the board this go around…FWIW.

According to Wikipedia,
The ball was also used as the match ball of 2009 FIFA Club World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, and a special version of the ball, the Jabulani Angola, was the match ball of the 2010 African Cup of Nations. This ball was also used in the 2010 Clausura Tournament of Argentina as well as the 2010 MLS season in the USA in the league’s colors of blue and green.
Not huge tourneys by any means, and it’s not like it was used in the Champions’ League or anything, but it’s not like Adidas dropped this ball on everyone last Friday. It’s been available to anyone with $150 to blow since December. I know if I were a World Cup caliber player, I would have spent the past six months playing around with a few of these things to figure out how they kick. They change the ball for every World Cup. By now, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anybody that the new ball would play differently.
I should point out that I’m not complaining about the caliber of play this year at all. Rather, I just don’t like that people are complaining about a new ball that they should have known was coming for the last four years and which they could have been using for the last six months.
A couple of things I have noticed re: the ball
It can go a long way. So long in fact that routine clearances are going from one penalty box to the other – basically into the opposing keeper’s hands.
Crosses have been dodgy for everyone. Any serves over 25 yds jut seem to take flight and keep going.
Ball release: check what happens to the ball on long serves when they hit the ground. It looks almost like a rock skipping on water. If the player doesn’t get a touch on it while in flight – ZOOM – it’s gone with no hope of catching it.
What would be cool to compare (if someone can find these stats) are shots on frame for this WC vs. last WC. I’m seeing tons of shots curling away from goal or with zero top spin despite the fact that it appears they are keeping the toe down through the shot. It’s almost as if the player is penalized more if they aren’t using perfect technique.
This also could be due to the rise of synthetic shoes being used now. Not sure how many keep up with this, but way back Nike started an arms race with all of the other brands re: the use of synthetic components in shoes. Soon thereafter, every brand has about 50/50 or 60/40 of their shoes are synthetic.
So why is this a big deal? I switched to synthetic (Adidas TUNIT) a while back and noticed some very good and bad things. The good was the ease at which you could bend a shot or curl a service – literally around players. While this could be done with leather, it was much harder to do and even then with less action. The bad (could also be considered good I guess) is that it amplified everything. So if your technique was off by a smidge the ball would still spin even when you wanted a straight strike.
So to summ up – if they are using more synthetic shoes and if the ball is lighter and grips to the synthetic shoes more, the flight path of the ball is going to be all over the place when they are striking harder shots/serves.
I've definitely noticed this.
Ball release: check what happens to the ball on long serves when they hit the ground. It looks almost like a rock skipping on water. If the player doesn’t get a touch on it while in flight – ZOOM – it’s gone with no hope of catching it.
I just thought they were some bad passes. I didn’t realize there could be an equipment issue behind it. Plus, since I don’t watch a ton of soccer, I don’t have a good frame of reference.
Just caught the 2nd Half of the Swiss vs. Spain...
Check after the 70 minute mark (I think). There’s a cracking shot from the Swiss player that they replay in slow motion. I got to watch the guy’s form during the strike. His toe is down the whole way through the contact. Ball starts to dip down (like it should) about 2-3 feet before it gets to the crossbar it starts floating back up above the cross bar for a near miss.
It’s the fricking ball + altitude.

Is it too early to blame
The low scores on the fricking ball and high altitude – That’s going to be my excuse – so just be prepared for the whining.
Holy Cow - Chile - Are You kidding me?!?!?
Let me preface this by saying I don’t know much about Honduras or Chile and they still have other teams to make a more informed comparison – BUT WOW!!! Loved Chile!
Outside of my own beloved U.S. side, Chile is my new favorite to watch. They have everything I was looking for:
Aggressive – great at applying immediate pressure sometimes in swarming fashion
Fast attacking style – the went at you FAST and had nice setups in combination play going into the attacking third. Felt like the Brazil of olden days
Good pace – While they could slow it down if necessary, they did a good job of controlling the pace of the game.
Possession – 56% possession and could have been more if they just wanted to sit on the ball and knock it around. Think about that – they played a fast attacking style and still got 56% possession. No way Honduras was that bad.
Shots – 20 shots to Honduras’ 7
When I saw the matchup I thought it was going to be a yawner. Now I’ll be plugged in every time Chile plays.
I have a couple n00b questions to ask after seeing a few games
1. How does the off-sides penalty work?
2. It sounds like people have been saying that the games have been low scoring. Do you think as we get later in the tournament and people get more used to the ball, will we see people taking better angles on their scoring shots? Or is it a different issue?
"You know, we had a lot of fun tonight. But there's nothing funny about vapor lock! It's the third most common cause of cars stalling. So please, take care of your car and get it checked!" -Joe Namath
I can't answer the second question
But offside is basically this: In the opponent’s half of the field, an attacking player can not be ahead of the ball and the second-to-last defensive player on the field (goalie included).
This is the best diagram I have seen of it.
![]()
Basically, the last blue player is in an offside position because he is ahead of the ball and the second-to-last defender. You’ve probably noticed by now that offside is not a penalty by itself, but only when the offside player is part of the action. So this particular play wouldn’t be whistled unless the ball were to be passed to the offside player, if he made a play on a rebound, or otherwise took part in the play while offside.

if we lose to Slovenia
I will officially think of US soccer like England—all bluster and no product. should we win 3-2 I will be very happy. can’t get a point, need 3.
Well, that should have been better,
but it could have been worse. If my math is right, we only need to beat Algeria by two or have the England-Slovenia game NOT end in a draw to advance, right?
Multiple scenarios I guess
It’d be nice if Algeria tied England today but I doubt it will happen. Mostly I just want to see England beat the tar out of Slovenia. And obviously we need to beat Algeria.

Crazy day yesterday.
We Wuz Robbed! Robbed I say.
I went from despair to elation to pissed in that game yesterday.
I can guarantee you the gentleman from Mali is done reffing in this world cup. he might have another first round match, but the refs get evaluated after each round he’s going back to Bamako, Niafunke or Timbuktu or whatever city he’s from.

Can anybody explain
why FIFA doesn’t perform post-match reviews of yellow cards? The NBA has a similar rule where receiving a certain number of technical fouls leads to a one-game suspension, but they review techs after the games to make sure that they were appropriate calls. We’ve seen two calls in the last three days (Findley’s “hand ball” and Kaka’s elbow to the “face”) where bad yellows were given, suspending the player from the final group play match. How can FIFA allow the world’s best players to sit on the bench because of bad calls?
Because...
…FIFA sucks.
They do occasionally, but not always. I’m guessing because they oversee a trillion matches and can’t do it for them all, though they should do it for the World Cup.

Figured that out quick
Disappointed because this is the first soccer I’ve really watched and it’s a lot more fun to watch than I thought it would be. But it’s really irking me to see some of the ridiculous things FIFA does. So they’re meeting today to decide whether they should get rid of Coulibaly for the rest of the tournament, but they still have him reffing a match yesterday?
