Littleaustin

I'm an idiot. I posted these photos in an earlier comment and didn't even put two and two together.

That is a photo of Marvin Austin and Greg Little in Miami. Check the timestamp, it's May 15th, a Saturday. And we also know Austin was in Miami on the weekend of May 29th per the drunken tweets. We don't know that he was there on the weekend of May 22nd, but it is a fairly safe assumption. Thus, this was not a one-shot deal, there were multiple weekends.

That is important because suddenly the Dareus timeline makes perfect sense. He claims he flew down to Miami to get away, but returned when he found out his mother died. His mother died May 18th. It all fits now. He flies down the weekend of the 15th, and returns a couple of days later when his mother dies.

And all of that brings up the obvious question. For all of the talk of the now infamous Memorial Day weekend party, was Dareus even in Florida when that took place? Based on what we now know, I think the answer is likely no.

lol

well, after learning all this crap about Austin, I figured I’d head over to the tar heel site and see what all they had to say about these developments. There were like 3 or 4 stories with a sum total of 1 comment among them, and that was from a spammer!

No wonder that Tarheel guy was coming over here to talk about it. I kinda feel sorry for him now. Then I think fuck UNC for this whole debacle.

You must have visited the Rivals site. Inside Carolina is the primary UNC site and the largest on the Scout network.

Also, if Austin is the ringleader, he deserves whatever he gets, and that’s what most of our fans are saying.

Btw, it’s Tar Heel, not Tarheel.

Rivals is better for football, but Scout is better for basketball.

However, trust me on this one—Scout is the place to go for UNC football and basketball coverage. It’s the biggest Scout site on the network, pro or college, and has the most traffic. The writers are good, too. This is the site that first broke the story on UNC’s end before the national guys picked it up.

If you want to get the UNC POV, go there. The Rivals UNC site blows.

To be clear, I am not taking any sides at this point. One thing about Austin is that he’s very outgoing, and very friendly, and I could see him being used or taken advantage of by some dirty agent. Of course, this wouldn’t excuse his actions if he knowingly had improper contact.

In the long run, I’m happy that the NCAA is cracking down on these predatory agents who take advantage of kids.

So now that we've established that there were likely multiple parties at said agent's house,

and that Austin stayed in Miami for 2 weekends (most likely 3), and that he paid for Dareus’s flight, is there any doubt that this guy was staying and partying on someone else’s dime? Even the richest frat boys I knew couldn’t afford a vacation like that (and still have money to blow at Gallette’s and Innisfree for the summer break). Is there any doubt now that this guy won’t see the field this year? Those benefits have to cross the threshold of reimbursement, indicating that Austin’s days as a Tar Heel (h/t to Heelfan) are most assuredly over.

Yeah and it's coming out now

that Dareus was lured there under false pretenses………..ie a get away with a family friend to take his mind off of his mother dying……..as soon as MD figured out it was an agent party he paid his friend back for the plane ticket (and got a receipt!) and booked it back to birmingham……..I don’t think that Dareus is in the same league with this Austin, who is of questionable character to put it kindly…….

His mother's long strugle vs heart disease is documented.

It’s apples to oranges, but when my grandfather was dying from Alzheimer’s I needed breaks away from the situation to stop from going insane. I’d hate going through that scenario with my mother/father.

I can totally see getting away for a few to get stabilized for the next round of being around a dying parent.

If he was to stick around after hearing of his mother’s death then I would be suspect of his attendance to this party.

Okay, but honestly—-and I don’t mean to stir the pot—but don’t you think his side of the story is a little strange? (and I’m not, btw, letting Austin off the hook).

But the way some of the articles coming of AL read, it’s like Austin basically kidnapped the guy and forced him to come to some party in Miami with a blindfold across his eyes. The craziest part is the line about Austin giving him a receipt. A receipt?!

by HeelFan on Jul 22, 2010 7:24 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, the receipt thing is wierd

After Julio and Ingram having to pay back a fishing trip with a man they claimed was a friend last year, and Jerrell Harris having to donate the value of a laptop to charity (plus serve a suspension for half the season) because he couldn’t produce the receipt, it may be that they now drive home to the players to make sure to get a receipt for anything over $X no matter who it’s from.

Or, it could be that receipt was a poor choice of words and what was really meant was some other kind of documentation like a cleared check or something.

by zeke2029 on Jul 22, 2010 7:41 AM CDT up reply actions

how so...?

if you’ve had coach saban and staff (and a consultant) beating it into your skull for a year that every expense has to be accounted for, don’t you think it would become automatic for players to do this after awhile? and keep in mind, transportation is very clearly one of the items in the ncaa list. dareus stands to lose millions if declared ineligble and misses the season. i don’t doubt for a second, given that and the prospect of being chewed out by coach saban would make him ask his so-called best buddy for a receipt.

This is the source for that?

The plane fare to Miami was paid for by Austin, but when Dareus arrived in Miami, he paid Austin for the ticket and received a receipt, the source said.

Maybe what Dareus (and/or the source in the article) really said was that he could produce a receipt, by which he meant a cancelled check. It doesn’t necessarily mean that Dareus’s story is that Austin carries around a receipt book.

by CarrotTop4 on Jul 22, 2010 9:53 AM CDT up reply actions

exactly.........

the problem with this tarheel is that he is trying to act like Dareus is the same as his player………all evidence (and I know that’s something that tarheel is not into) points to the fact that austin knew, knew that an agent was throwing the party, and didn’t care one way or the other as long as he got his bling……….and Dareus was invited and when he saw that it was wrong, he left and paid for everything himself………which makes all the difference in the world – Dareus didn’t want anything to do with it; Austin wanted to play the baller and tweet about it………..

Vernon and Vontae Davis’ agent is Todd France. Mckinnie is a client of Drew Rosenhaus.

I’m not sure it’s either one, really. McKinnie actually went to Miami and is apparently there all of the time. Also, Vernon Davis’ brother Vontae is a cornerback for the Dolphins, so again it makes sense why those guys would be there. They wouldn’t necessarily be guys you would suspect to have been brought in by an agent.

The deal with the receipt...

More things I didn’t think of late last night…

The deal with the receipt probably has a very, very simple explanation. When Dareus arrived in Miami, he probably wrote Austin a check for the plane ticket. Easiest way. Check gets cashed, and boom… there’s your receipt. He can show in his bank records where the check was cashed, and can probably even produce a photocopy of the check from his bank.

I’m not sure I know anyone who would call a canceled cleared check a “receipt”.

I'm wrong all the time.

by PeteHoliday on Jul 22, 2010 8:14 AM CDT up reply actions

It is a bit outside of its normal usage, admittedly. When we hear “receipt,” I usually think of something issued by a business.

On the other hand, though, in essence a receipt is just a writing acknowledging the receiving of goods or money. While a cleared check may not be in the normal usage of the word receipt, I think in practice it clearly meets that definition. Furthermore, in this specific case, “receipt” could be used more colloquially to refer to having some documentation to support one’s claims.

In any event, I think that’s largely a semantical discussion. If Dareus claims that he repaid Austin for the flight, and can then point to a cleared check or be willing to show in his bank records where that money was deducted from his account and / or deposited into an account belonging to Austin, I would think that would be sufficient. Now obviously if he paid in straight cash that could be an issue, but even so I can think of other ways that he could have repaid Austin that would have left a paper trail. My point is just that his receipt claim, while perhaps a bit strange sounding at first, could actually be very plausible.

Receipts

Two things:

1. There is a very common situation where we’re all used to collecting receipts for everything: business trips. As others have said, it’s eminently reasonably for Marcell to ask for a receipt if he has been drilled to do so by Saban/compliance, especially if he thought something was fishy. Good for him, and I hope it’s true.

2. With that in mind, when you’re on a business trip and ask the cabbie for a receipt, what does he give you? Sure, he has a book of paper with the word “Receipt” at the top, but it’s not like the restaurant book or a receipt from a cash register. It’s basically just a piece of paper where the cabbie writes the amount and signs it. The same principle could apply to Austin/Dareus’s “receipt.” The only question then will be what weight UA/NCAA give it.

by Espyonage on Jul 22, 2010 8:55 AM CDT up reply actions

If that. Most often I've just had the cabbie hand me the blank paper.

Same thing for donations at my local Goodwill. Not that either of these has much of anything to do with the current topic.

The surrounding tweets are talking about what he was getting at a smoothie place and photos of some girl holding up purses like they were shopping. It really didn’t look like they ran into each other at a party.

My perspective

Admittidly, on its face, I can see how it would sound strange to someone that he was provided a “receipt” for the price of a ticket. But, It doesn’t sound strange to me at all. Anything that would provide sufficient evidence that he paid for the ticket should be enough. Even if it is written on a napkin and signed by Austin. Evidence is the key. I think most people outside of the Bama nation trying to point to the absurdity of a college football player providing and/or receiving a “receipt” are underestimating Nick Saban’s attention to detail and the extent to which our players are being trained on this matter. In other words, haters. It is also possible that I am drinking the kool-aid. I choose to believe in our coach and players until proven otherwise. Even if it turns out that Marcell made a mistake and did the wrong thing, he’s a kid. My first reaction to this situation was____! (insert cuss word), we are going to have a harder time winning games without him if all this is true. After time to think about it, I am more concerned about Marcell as a person now than I am about winning games so I can talk trash at work (although, obviously, that is still very important to me lol). I hope that Marcell did the right thing for his sake. He sure seems like a wonderful kid with a bright future ahead of himself if he stays on the straight and narrow. And if he did made a mistake, I hope that he learns from it and is able to move on and be successful. However this turns out, I will still love Marcell! Roll Tide!

HAHA

Yes, that was an obvious reference to previous years’ scandals. You see my point though, right?

Great catch!

That’s what I was trying to figure out too, when I read Dareus’s story that he was there but left when he found out about his mother. Didn’t make sense because the party was on Memorial Day, but his mother passed the week before that.

So if that’s the way it went down, then Dareus wasn’t even at the party at all. And Austin was there for over a week (presumably partying the whole time, on the agent’s dime).
