Fire away. Feel free to ask about methodology, my opinions on why certain teams are higher or lower than expected, whatever. And beyond that, I do hope you enjoy this sort of thing.  There is no right answer to any of this, but this is my stab at using the tools I have to come up with my own contribution to the discussion.

So Bryant had 5 teams that ranked higher than any non-Bryant coached teams

And last year was second only to 1934 among our teams he didn’t coach. Since he was a player in 1934, this system at least recognizes 2009 as the best we’ve had yet with no association to Bryant.

Thanks for this

Interesting to see Franchione’s ’02 team rank higher than the Shula ’05 squad and the ’08 guys.

Good Lord I hope someone climbs out of some Picken’s County forest and shows up in these comments all outraged at the 1924 team’s ranking.

Why? Clearly it was the boys of ’25 that got the shaft, by gum!!

How cool is this??

Our ’09 team would be the best in school history for about 95% of the teams out there, and they are #9 on this list, with really good reasons!

The Tide it the best!

And

I agree about the ’61 team, by the way.

My senior year of high school:

10. 1992 Alabama (13-0)

to my senior year of college:

95. 1997 Alabama (4-7)

(sigh) I’d like to formally apologize for my negative impact on our football team’s success during my time in Tuscaloosa.

Maybe it's time to pursue a second stint in HS?

1994

I was still in high school so I don’t remember all of the details, but I remember in the SEC Championship that we probably should have gone for 2 with our last touchdown and because of it we lost by 1. This was pre-over time, so I guess the SEC Championship would have ended in a tie. If our record was 11-0-1, would we have played for the National Title?

by tide96 on Jul 9, 2010 2:01 PM CDT reply actions

Nope

We’d have gone to the Sugar, Penn State still plays in the Rose, and Nebraska still plays in the Orange Bowl. Whatever the faults of the BCS may be, it’s better than the system that preceded it.

Actually, on second thought I seem to have a vague memory that there was actually an overtime rule for conference championship games before there was one for the rest of the season. If that were the case, and we beat Florida in OT, then who knows how the vote would have gone. We still would have played FSU in the Sugar Bowl though rather than one of the other contenders.

by zeke2029 on Jul 9, 2010 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Correction

The Bowl Coalition was in place at the time, so we likely would have played Nebraska in either the Orange or the Sugar. Win that one and we likely would have been the champs.

yeah

1961 was a good year, but the schedule of the 1978 team should put them in the top five, 1966 team should be in the top 5 (undefeated, 6 shutouts, should have been Bryants 3 NC), but not to have the 2009 team at #1 is ridiculous (NC, SEC Champs, undefeated, HEISMAN TROPHY, 6 1st team All Americans, beat the last 4 NC in the same year) atleast that is my opinion.

Formula or not..

I don’t think there would be too much argument if 1955 was bumped down a couple of spots.
