Word on the screets is that...
Phillip Ely, four star quarterback out of Tampa, Florida, commits to us tomorrow. I have no link, because this is word on the screets, so there is no link. Or you could just say this is my opinion, in which case the source is my mouth. Either way, watch for this tomorrow.

while we do appreciate the heads up...
roll bama roll isn’t particularly interested in 1) scooping anyone and 2) fomenting rumors. we’ll leave the spreading of unverified rumors for MGOBlog.
Roll 'Bama Roll: The Champagne of 'Bama Blogs.
Rivals...
….doesn’t even show an offer from Alabama, so that’s news to me. Still, I wouldn’t turn him down.
Roll Bama Roll - The Champagne of Bama Blogs.
at 6'1 186lbs,
he’s not a very big guy to be an elite qb prospect, but if Dave Rader and Gary Crowton have offered, who am I to scoff at their infinite wisdom?

Yeah
I don’t ever look at that because it’s so misleading. It also shows him with medium interest in like 15 schools when he has been down to 5 for quite some time now. Also, from what I understand, he got an offer from us just a few days ago.
I kinda hope this
“word” is rumor because I can’t see this kid getting much play behind the guys we have and I would not consider him an elite player. In other words we can dop better. There was a day when we would have been trilled, but that is not now.
As much as I hate Auburn I hate Tenn. that much more.
Let me explain.
Ely is rated like #5 Qb by Rivals, but #41 by Scout. When I see such a wide range I tend to go with the lower one. So I see this guy as about the 40th best qb in the land. If that is true why take him?
As much as I hate Auburn I hate Tenn. that much more.
They're all arbitrary
Maxpreps has Daryl Collins as the #3WR, while Espn has him at #72 and Rivals at #48. Brent Calloway is the #7 recruit in the country according to Rivals, but not even in Espn’s top 150.

I'm sure
that CNS and company would really appreciate your insight. Why don’t you alert them of the huge mistake that they don’t know they are making?
tisk tisk..don’t be so sensitive…5026 makes a great point. We don’t need a QB and if we did…Im not sure this guy would be it.

Didn't Coach Saban...
say something about us having only 3 scholarship qbacks and that was a reason for experimenting with Blake Sims. Seems they would want to take a qback if the situation was right.

I'm not
Sensitive. You’re just wrong. After gmac leaves we will have 2 scholarship qbs. Why on earth would we not take a 3rd? You want to take a qb in every class. We don’t have one in this one. And ely is the best one left. Don’t you think Nick Saban is the kind of guy that would only offer a scholarship to someone whom he thought deserved it?

I have to agree here...
….we’ve taken a QB in every signing class so far and that’s generally just standard operating procedure for a lot of big time programs. Just because he isn’t a super stud 5 star doesn’t mean we may not need that extra arm. He may never play a significant snap at Alabama or end up transferring like Star Jackson, but after McElroy graduates we really only have McCarron and Sims as SEC caliber QBs (and maybe Blake Sims, but not likely), so there is definitely room and a need for a solid QB prospect in this class.
Roll Bama Roll - The Champagne of Bama Blogs.
im not saying UAyeroc25
is wrong..im just saying 5026 made a good point. i have no clue about Ely. he might be a great pick up…im not sure we HAVE to get a qb in this class. Sims just came on and he could play QB if needed. Its never a bad idea but im not sure its a must.

I know we
always take a qb and then like Star or Fanuzzi they often transfer because we only use 1 qb and you just don’t get to play much unless someone is hurt.
And, I have no way of knowing what Saban knows. But there are other options. Ogilvie, Blake Sims,a transfer, another walk on or even a ju-co guy. I just seriously wonder if Ely is going to ever be much at Bama unless I’m missing something or he is a late grower.
And we didn’t do so bad in 2008 when our 3rd string qb was a walk on. I mean seriously what are the odds a 3rd string qb ever plays in a real game situation at Bama? And if it does happen I’d say we are in pretty bad trouble anyway. In cases like that I’m not sure I wouldn’t just want a guy that can hand off and not fumble and let Ingram run from the Wildcat a lot. Blake Sims would be fine doing that.
But if he signs then welcome to Alabama.
As much as I hate Auburn I hate Tenn. that much more.
He committed.
And not slamming you, but as Ely UAyeroc says above, I’ll trust Saban’s judgement. They got to see him in camp and then gave him an offer. Good enough for me.
Wilder is his teammate......
thats a good enough reason alone.

He doesn't have the...
overwhelming skill set. But he is a proven winner. A least at the level he is on. He is very McElroy-ish and can at the very least provide us a serviceable backup in the future. I will never complain about taking a capable quarterback. Plus, if this holds true, it will really piss off LSU.
Ely is 6-1, GMac is 6-3.
There is a difference. Phillip Sims is 6-2, but 214.
And yes ESPN as him at #15. So there is wide range on him.
But I still contend he won’t play much at Bama. Obviously that is my view. But I think we will redshirt Sims this year meaning whomever we get at QB next year would have to beat Sims out (and AJ) at some point or wait until their senior year just to play. I don’t see Ely doing either. It is always good to sign a qb in each class so I guess we are going to take him. But don’t expect him to be a household word.
And, by the way Morgan Ogilvie, who has a great arm, has been held back by being too small at 6-0.
As much as I hate Auburn I hate Tenn. that much more.
Morgan Ogilvie, who has a great arm
and an even better pedigree

SO,...
how can he commit w/o an actual offer? And what network is it being aired on?

He picked up
his offer from us a few days ago. It’s just not listed on rivals. Assuming that rivals is what you’re looking at.
No clue on the network, but I haven’t heard any network mentioned, so it may just be a smaller deal.
Okay...
where is it listed, then? Why are you the only person on this thread that knows about it?
Some people say "If you can't beat them, join them". I say "If you can't beat them, beat them", because they will be expecting you to join them, so you will have the element of surprise.

b/c he's a veritable fountain of insider football knowledge
he was Chip Brown’s source in the realignment story, after all. He also told Rogers Redding that Patrick Peterson was in bounds and UT deserved a re-kick. Expecting this dguy to cite or document a source (even though he’s a freakin pr student for Christ’s sake) is like expecting Mike Price to turn down a lapdance.

i dont know why everyone is hatin on you
everything you’ve speculated on in a post, you identified as your own speculation. and then you’ve actually been right to top it off.
welcome to RBR UAyeroc25. you’re a good addition as far as i’m concerned.

They aren't hatin'
they just like their sources. And I tried to say that I was just throwing out some stuff I heard. In a fanshot none the less. Not like it’s a huge deal.
no one is hatin
i think some just took your reaction to us not “believing” you as a little butt hurt. its all good yo. we can tend to be harsh on newbies. Especially when so many turn out to be complete douches…You don’t seem to be that guy though. Welcome.

no hating here,
I’m just a dick. You’re no slow hand row, i’ll give you that. But where can I find these “screets?” I need to know how safe a certain “investment” is relative to the risk involved.

FWIW
Rivals accidentally released an article saying that he picked Alabama. Either someone has an inside scoop or they just had a hunch and went ahead and wrote it. Check it out before its deleted. http://palm.rivals.com/newsdetail.asp?SID=&CID=1111969
It is pretty short and I could copy and paste it but I would not do that because rivals is a pay site and that would be unethical.

no
whats unethical is that they make you pay to see where some HS kid picked to go to college.
