I think Gentry Estes nicely sums up the problem we have at quarterback. McElroy generally protects the football well and plays to our offensive strengths, but he is entirely too tentative when it comes to throwing the ball downfield, and in any event when he chooses to do so the results generally aren't very good. McCarron would definitely fix that problem... he'd air it out and I don't think there is any doubt the effectiveness of our vertical passing attack would increase exponentially. Of course, though, the problem is he'd probably have a lot more turnovers and wouldn't manage the game as well. I get the bad feeling that it is somewhat of a lose-lose situation... we need someone who can consistently stretch the field vertically while protecting the football, and right now I'm not sure that either McElroy or McCarron fit that mold.
