Your Official RBR Nike Pro Combat Uniform for Alabama Thread
OK people. Here's the news. Nike issued a press release this week that said the following:
BEAVERTON, Ore. (August 17, 2010) - Ten of the top college football programs have been selected to wear uniquely designed Nike uniforms for at least one game during the 2010 season the company announced today.
The University of Alabama, Boise State University, University of Florida, University of Miami (FL), The Ohio State University, Oregon State University, University of Pittsburgh, Texas Christian University, Virginia Tech and West Virginia University will wear the innovative designs for a minimum of one game on their schedules. The dates of those games will be announced at the unveiling of the uniforms Sept. 1 in New York.
The Nike Pro Combat System of Dress uniforms the schools will wear are engineered to provide superior protection and durability, while utilizing advanced fabrics and tooling that reduce weight. Nike worked diligently with each university to bring relevant elements of the school's rich heritage into the futuristic elite fit uniform designs.
The collaborations with the universities produced the highly customized uniforms that will be revealed just days prior to the start of the 2010 college football season.
So, yes, this is going to happen. Chase Goodbread at TideSports has a report this morning using an anonymous source in the UA athletics department offering a few more details. The key part you need to be aware of is the penultimate graph:
In May, Alabama reached a seven-year extension on its contract with the equipment and apparel giant through 2018 with a projected value of up to $30 million. Alabama’s use of the Pro Combat uniform for a 2010 game was a part of that agreement, but the university maintained a right of approval on style changes.
Now here's the deal. There are no authentic photos of the proposed uniforms floating about and there is no confirmation on which game Alabama will wear them. Until Sept. 1 it's all speculation. So, there ain't no reason to start another damned thread in the fanshots and/or fanposts to bitch about it. From here on out, if you got something to say about this, do so below.

the photo you speak of
seems to originate from a sports logo website. a thread in the forums offered a template for folks to photoshop protypes off the pro combat uniforms used last season. one of the first attempts was a “new” alabama uniform. keep in mind, this website is not the only one doing this.
so, if you happen across one of these shots of the new uni, feel free to tell us about it here but be skeptical until we have reason to be otherwise.

We might be doing like UF...
They are wearing chrome orange helmets vs. UGA this year. I think UNC has chrome blue ones too. So, maybe a chrome crimson helmets…..?
(Also, side note for any UF lurkers: Be ready for orange jerseys for the first time since before Spurrier. Game is unknown yet, but I’ve seen a photo from inside their football office for Brantley.)

the jersey’s….change the pants….the gloves…but dont touch the Helmet…that shit is sacred..

well
it might have changed a few times for special circumstances…but..
Alabama has one of the smallest sets of different historical helmet designs for the period covered by this web site (1960 to present), and the team’s current helmet design may qualify as the “oldest helmet design still in use” (at least among the Division I teams),
Like i said….dont F with the helmet…

1818-1820
In 1818, the federal government authorized Alabama Territory to set aside a township for the establishment of a “seminary of learning.” Alabama was admitted to the Union on March 2, 1819, and a second township added to the grant. On December 18, 1820, the seminary was established officially and named “The University of the State of Alabama.”
1860
The University of Alabama became a military school — martial departmental and disciplinary systems established.

If you look back in old writings, paintings and drawings dating back to around
the 1860’s and even to today. most of the time (not all but most) the color given to the Confederate army was red. Look on battle field paintings where each army’s position was laid out. Typically, the union was Blue and the south Red. Plus the main color of the Confederate flag is red..
So i wasn’t implying that their nickname was the Red Army just that its the color most associated with them.. Poor choice of words on my part.
And like i said above, this is all my guess on why colonel reb was red… but if you look at the colors typically associated with the conferderate army they are typically red. I even asked a fellow history major in my office the same question and his answer was also red..
"You stay bought into it when you see your opponent sucking air and physically failing and you're still fit and ready and you know you own his ass."- Corey Reamer speaking about Coach Cochran
i have never seen this
you might be able to argue that the battle flag of the army of northern virginia was predominantly red or something like that but the uniforms were almost always grey or some other drab color. and in terms of referring to them as the “red” army… i’ve read everything by foote, freeman, catton and quite a few others and never ran across this.

Kleph...
I used a poor choice of words…Im not saying they are or were ever called the red army…
So i wasn’t implying that their nickname was the Red Army just that its the color most associated with them..
Seriously, i just misspoke…Im no expert but i was obsessed with the Civil from the age of 10 to the present. I have visited over 20 battle fields…I was a history major and every elective i could take revolved around Civil War battles, tactics and the culture surrounding this country from 1840-1880.
All i was trying to do was think of a reason why a team who’s mascot is a Rebel and who used the Confederate flag as one of its symbols would make Colonel Reb red..that is all.

"You stay bought into it when you see your opponent sucking air and physically failing and you're still fit and ready and you know you own his ass."- Corey Reamer speaking about Coach Cochran
bammer, the color of the graphics
depicting “enemy” forces on military maps and historical documents is almost always red.
Since the North defeated the South and gets to depict the history, it’s only natural that the Confederate forces are depicted in red (enemy).
true...
but even when looking at maps created from the southern perspective we are usually Red…but its really not a big deal. It was just a thought…

Sounds like nothing major...
… although the Crimson Tide’s traditional uniform look will not be subject to the more radical style changes that Nike Pro Combat uniforms have manifested at other schools, according to a source close to the situation.
"Alabama officials were and are deeply committed to maintaining the look of the uniform," said the source.
The appearance of the Nike Pro Combat Alabama uniform will remain largely unchanged, with a slight stylistic variation within the traditional look, and the color scheme will remain the same, according to the source.

Also, keep in mind...
Also, keep in mind that our change was compared to Texas last year. If you’ll go back and look at their version, it was basically completely unchanged on the uniform itself, with about the only change being a small logo being added to the left hip area of the pant leg (as speculated for us by someone earlier on this thread).
The biggest change they had was the helmet, which went with a bit of a throwback look. They used the helmet design with both the numbers and the horns that they used for much of the 1960’s. I kind of expect us to have the same. I’m expecting either we stick with the crimson helmets with the slightly different numerals that we used then, or we break out the white helmets.
And honestly, with MSU being the apparent opponent that we use these for, I’m actually thinking we’re going to see white helmets.

If Nike respects our tradition of staying traditional while other schools go with the “lets throw up on our unis and think it looks cool”….then im fine with something like what Texas did…but if they pull shit like they did to FSU, UF or Oregon on a yearly basis…Nike can go to hell for all i care.

the idea of the script A on the pants instead of the Nike logo staying. I’m assuming our uniforms will either be the mostly unchanged like the one guy said, or we’ll see a sort of throwback like Ohio St., Oklahoma, and Texas last year. If I could get to urban dictionary from my work computer to post a link to what that term means… I wouldn’t.

I agree.
It gives the next guy (and the next guy, for the next 100 years) something to live up to. Think about all the QBs that have worn #12, and all the talk of whether or not they would “earn it”.
no, i'm not either
i was just throwing it out there. that said though, it wouldn’t surprise me.

bad news for some
Nike didn’t spend all the time and money so only the fans at the game and the ones who bought pay per view could see the new uniforms. So you can forget about GSU AND San Jose State. Florida is on that list too and seeing as how that just might be the biggest regular season game this year you can count on at least one of the teams wearing the new uniforms, if not both teams.
Source?

Agreed..
Nike wants to showcase these uniforms. Looking at last year it seems a lot of the teams that had them wore them against a conference rival. TCU against Utah, Virgina Tech against Maryland, FSU against Maryland as well, Florida against FSU, Missouri against Kansas, Texas against Texas A&M, Ohio St. against Michigan, Oklahoma vs. Texas Tech, Miami against South Florida, and LSU against Arkansas.
So…good chance we’ll be wearing them against Penn St., Florida, Ole Miss, Mississippi or Auburn.

For the St., that’s suppose to be Mississippi St near the end there.

Don't worry about Kleph.
He sits on his marathon running high horse all day. Probably drives an Eco friendly car and has shut that smells like strawberry blue bell ice cream. In all seriousness though, I feel like I dropped most of the info above along with the Kendall Kelly stuff and he blew up. (probably because he didn’t wrote it himself). I know people personally whom have deflected from this site because of kleph.

as far as i’m concerned you should stick around and try to get along a bit, (if you enjoy coming here that is. i enjoy it) and not take shit so personally.

(as seen in the post)
MSU certainly seems like the most likely candidate, but, hey, that’s just speculation. But if you have a trustworthy source with more information, feel free to let us know (no sarcasm).

Well..
Just read on FriendsoftheProgram.net that Alabama will be wearing Pro-Combat against Mississippi St. Last year they were all over the first set of Nike Pro Combat uniforms. They had one of those photo-shop Alabama uniforms up but have long since updated to say that was not the actual uniform, but Alabama would still be wearing them against Mississippi St.
